libguestfs on Ubuntu
So I got a lot further building libguestfs on Ubuntu, up to the point
where I can boot the appliance and run some simple commands. We need
to push some patches upstream, and there are still some things in
Ubuntu itself which are broken. This documents how far I've got.
(1) libguestfs from git, Ubuntu 9.10, all updated to the latest
versions. You will of course also need to read the README

R for ubuntu 10.04?
Hi dear all
I am currently using Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic) and R 2.10, I can find a R release
that support "karmic" in cran under ubuntu directory, I plan to update my
laptop to Ubuntu 10.04 after April 30, since I have to use some new features
or new version in it, e.g. QT 4.6, I don't know if there is going to be a R
release that will support this newly released Ubuntu?

[PATCH ubuntu repost] Ubuntu: Use apt-get instead of aptitude when installing guestfsd.
Previously posted here:
http://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2009-December/msg00041.html
I can't get aptitude to work under debirf (not on Ubuntu anyway), so
using apt-get is necessary for me.

Problems with ubuntu karmic x64
Hello.
I've tried to install R on ubuntu and all succeeded untill I searched for
the icon to execute, simply didn't appear anywhere.
I wrote in terminal:
*sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list*
then
added with :
*##EstadÃstica con R
deb http://cran.es.r-project.org/bin/linux/ubuntu karmic/*
saved,
*sudo apt-get update*
and
*sudo apt-get install r-base*
as instructions say.

[PATCH x 3] Three small fixes for Debian
These small fixes are required to fix the build and tests on Debian
(using the debootstrap/debirf appliance).
There is currently another bug in the Debian tests which I'm looking
into. hexdump always fails as follows:
libguestfs: error: hexdump: hexdump: /test123: hexdump: /sysroot/test123: Bad file descriptor

Debian based appliance
Hi,
just a short heads up about the current status of libguestfs on Debian:
Current git master builds and works fine on Debian sid. The only change
you have to make is to use a custom kernel instead of the one in
squeeze/sid by pointing DEBIRF_KERNEL_PACKAGE in
appliance/debian/debirf.conf to something recent enough (>= 2.6.35)
like:

Applications->Wine->Programs missing in Ubuntu karmic
wine version: wine-1.0.1
OS: Ubuntu karmic 9.10
I installed wine by doing "sudo aptitude install wine". I then successfully installed a windows program.
[kurt at desktop:~]$ wine SetupRegexBuddy3kurtkrueckeberg.exe
But I don't see the Programs menu item under Applications->Wine. What do I need to do? Thanks, Kurt

Can't seem to install RMAGICK on Ubuntu Karmic Koala
hi guys,
I have been trying to install Rmagick on ubuntu karmic koala for a
day.
Yes, ImageMagicK has already been installed and works great with
paperclip and a few other perl scripts I have (which uses
Image::Magick).
The following is what the execution looks like when I tried to
install rmagick ( " gem install rmagick" ):

fedoostrap or deboostrap requirement
Hi,
While trying to ./configure libguestfs on gentoo fails since it requires
feboostrap or deboostrap
Can this be made optional and not as necessary requirement, since there
are still many useful uses for libguestfs
besides bootstrapping, which can be used on distros like gentoo.
Thanks

This seems to have been implicitly ACKed by Guido last time, so
I intend to push it.

Why does libvirt insert USB controller automagically?
Hello all,
I find this curious behavior that libvirt will automatically insert a USB controller and a memballoon virtio driver into the domain's XML, when defineXML is called. IOW, the original XML did not have these 2 devices but they are present right after defineXML is called. Why should libvirt add a USB controller?
DETAILS:
Here is a little Python snippet to show that behavior:

Ubuntu clients can acces to the [homes] share
Hi,
I have a server with Debian Lenny, and I installed samba on it. I do two
shares, one, a normal folder with auth, and this share worjs fine in all the
computers (Windows XP and Ubuntu Karmic). But the [homes] share only works
in the XP machines.
When I try to acces to the [homes] share from a ubuntu machine, I can't
authenticate, I mean, the auth box don't appear.
?Anyone know why?

how to update R10.0 to R11.0 in Ubuntu linux
Dear R-listers,
I am new to R in linux. And, I am now confused by updating R in Ubuntu
9.10 linux system. I would like to seek some advice on that problem.
I have done what are listed in CRAN linux installation guide:
1. add an entry like "deb
http://cran.cnr.berkeley.edu/bin/linux/ubuntu karmic/" in
/etc/apt/sources.list file in my computer.
2. To install the complete R system, use

[PATCH] Make appliance-building work on systems with default library search paths differing from the appliance's
Systems such as Debian (and thus Ubuntu) operate with 64-bit programs in
/lib, with /lib64 a symlink to it: as a result, they apply a patch to
their glibc adjusting the default search path of the 64-bit dynamic
loader (only used if the library is not found in ld.so.cache) to look in
/lib, and instruct the 32-bit one to look in /lib32. Because fakechroot
is implemented via LD_PRELOAD, it ends up

problems with Rcmdr on R-2.10.0 with Karmic Koala
Dear R Debian People:
I have put this on regular R help as well, but thought that I'd try here too.
I updated to R-2.10.0 on Ubuntu Karmic Koala via apt-get update, apt-get install.
Then I had a problem that said that I need MASS <= R-2.9.2. Fair enough. Uwe Ligges was kind enough to point out that I needed to use
> update.packges(checkBuilt=TRUE)
So I did.
Now the menu on Rcmdr
