changing character to a vector name
Dear R People: I would like to generate a vector/variable name from within a loop to be passed to a table function. This is what I have so far: >assign("p1",paste("raw3.df$",rw2$V1[3],sep="")) >p1 [1] "raw3.df$CITIZEN" > Essentially, I want to use the raw3.df$CITIZEN along with another value to generate a table. However, I'm stuck here. I

Clean enviroments in Wine
I read somewhere that in order for a program to work properly in Wine it should be installed in a clean enviroment, something along the lines of one software conflicting with anothers drivers/runtime/apps/etc. Is this true? Does this mean that I can only have one program installed with Wine at a time? Can one not create several 'fresh enviroments'?

Workarounds for Splinter Cell: Conviction
Hi I've been able to get Splinter Cell: Conviction running quite smooth on my system, and I just want to share with any others what I had to do to get it all working. A few days ago, I submitted a testreport in AppDB, but it was rejected with the info that I was testing a patched version of wine. Which is true, because vanilla wine just crashes with the exception as tested by other people.

Fable breaks from wine 1.1.10 to 1.1.11
Hi, I guess I should open a bug in bugzilla. Some questions: I installed 1.1.10 and 1.1.11 through PlayOnLinux. Does this make a difference for the bug reporting? I have the output from the terminal (backtrace below). What could I do to provide more useful information? I suppose the next step would be to do a bisect but I've never done it and I suspect I'll need quite a bit of time.

little fighter 2 vdragonballz 3.0 mod crashes on load sprite
I was trying to run one of my kids favourite games with Wine, alas it crashes accessing a null pointer, early on while loading one of the sprite files (not corrupted). I guess the program should be doing better memory checking but since this works on Windows, maybe Wine has fed him before some broken data. Unfortunately, the terminal output doesn't seem much helpful:

about overriding dlls
I am checking an old bug http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9637 which happens to affect several games. Before arriving to the bug in question, one has to workaround another bug relate to shdocvw.dll. It is recommended to override a set of libraries which I believe should be put in system32. However, at least some of the dlls are already there. Are these the wine builtins or rather proxies as

Likely regression for Pirates of the Caribbean
I tried to install the game with the latest 1.1.16. However it quickly dies at install time with err:msi:ITERATE_Actions Execution halted, action L"DX9_Launcher.A545835B_7768_4D96_A5BC_930949616C2D" returned 1603 The game is rated Platinum for 1.1.2 and Gold for 1.1.3, none of which mentioned install problems, so I guess it is a regression. I wanted to try with these older versions but

~FAQ: parallel install of multiple wine versions
This is not in the FAQ, but since different apps run better depending on wine version, and I just have a case I would like to try, is it possible to do it? I don't want to mess up my system with experiences so, with ubuntu, what would one have to do?

about re-opening a bug
Hi, I reported a bug [http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17774] a while ago and since it didn't crash after a fresh system restart, I proposed to close it, which was done (by Austin English). But recently I got a crash after restart and finally I compiled the source code for 1.1.17 to get useful info at the backtrace. I found out and the crash (with 1.1.17) happens exactly at the same
