Lotus 123 with Wine
Am a newbee to Linux and am trying to evaluate various distros to see how they fit my needs. For this purpose I now have six trial Linux partitions on the same machine. My other criterions to replace XP as my main system have been passed by all the distros, but remains the last one: to be able to handle Lotus wk4-files. That is where I have my history. First tried installing Lotus 123 from

How to install Wine-1.1.7 on Ubuntu 7.10
I've downloaded Wine 1.1.7 and unzipped it onto my desktop. I've printed out the readme file and have followed the quick start by running ./tools/wineinstall (I'm doing all this by mouseclicks - no terminal). A dialog box flashes and then nothing happens. I can't stop this dialog box long enough to see if there is an error msg, so I don't know what is happening, except I

Best 64-bit Linux distro for R?
The R FAQ is very helpful about installing R on various Linuxes, but doesn't seem to discuss the advantages of one distribution over another. I am new to Linux (though not to Unix!), and would appreciate some guidance from those with experience. I plan to set up a headless Linux x86 server for the sole purpose of running 64-bit R. Are there reasons to prefer some Linux distributions over

[OT] linux on a PPC (mac mini)
Hello there, complete off-topic, sorry about this, but my former idea was to install a CentOS on an old mac mini (PPC!). Disappointed to see that PowerPC is not a supported architecture and that non ARM or Intel architecture are not managed by recent distros.. :-(. Searching the web, I see very few possibilities to install a recent (I need gnome2) GNU/Linux distro on such hardware. I gave Linux

Wine distro with MS WOS look and feel
i think that if a distribution with MS WOS XP and 7 look and feel based on Gnome and Ubuntu or debian is released a lot of people would migrate. People is comdortable with what they know, even Gnome is easy to use, they like Control panel, Documents and Settings and Start vuttons from MS WOS. If program Icons should be in desktops, an start button with a control panel, My documents and so one,

Which Linux best suits Samba3?
In a discussion with one of the main answer people, of whose time I am greatly appreciative, it was suggested that some of my problem (or solution) may be to run Samba on a distro that's better suited for it. Problem is, I don't have the time nor the inclination to download a bunch of distros just to install, test, fdisk, repeat. So I ask. what is a recommended recent distro that works

Wine OK on HP Mini 1000??
I recently got a mini 1000 with linux OS. I have always used windows and didn't know what OS was on the notebook until I started playing with it. I am slowly learning about linux, (very slowly). I want to download a windows program called " brain fitness Pro" onto my Mini. It appears that I need to download Wine first to accomplish this. I believe that the mini I have uses Gnome for

Using Wine across distros with symlink
I have set up the configurations and profiles for some of my programs so that I can use them across distros, and easily configure new installations with all my old settings. For instance, if I use Firefox in Fedora, add some bookmarks, then go to suse or Mandriva the new bookmarks are there, as is history, etc. Same for Thunderbird. To do this I copy the relevant folder from /home/user to my

Good day to you wine users I've following problem, I've a cheap joystick which is recognized as DragonRise Inc. - however many of them are I guess. Re: The single major remaining Wine complaint everyone makes...
my thought is that the people that are complaining that the buttons and look of programs running in wine are the same ones that allow Microsoft to keep working on their GUI and not focusing on the kernel of their operating systems (anyone remember the talking paperclip in MSoffice?) They're worried about how pretty everythign is and not how it performs. hence the reason that Vista and xp never

Wine 1.3.25 kills sound with PulseAudio
In version 1.3.24 and previous versions, sound was hit-and-miss on my system unless I had ESD enabled. Now that ESD has been removed, so has any reliable sound. When using the ALSA driver, some sounds work for a while, after which all sound completely stops. Enabling ESD and using the PulseAudio eSound plugin made all sounds work perfectly. That is now gone with version 1.3.25, and sound is now

Best Linux Distro for Rails App?
After a bad experience trying to get even the simplest Rails application running at Lunarpages, I''m moving to Slicehost. Does anyone have an opinion as to which of their Linux distros to use for a fairly high-traffic Rails site? They offer CentOS, Debian 5, Fedora (10 to 12), Gentoo, Red Hat EL 5, and Ubuntu (8 and 9). While we''re on the subject, does anyone have any opinions as
