rsync not transferring files [SOLVED]
Something is not right as I have added files to the server that has
never shown up on my backup machine - so everything is NOT being update
by any means. I finally removed rsync - version
rsync-3.0.6-12.el6.x86_64 and installed the same version that is on my
server which is rsync-3.1.1-1.el6.rfx.x86_64
Now everything is working as expected. Perhaps there is something

Vectorworks 2010 almost working
Hi all!
I'm trying to get the cadprogram Vectorworks 2010 (VW) run with Wine. So far I have succeed in getting the program installed and to start up with a plain Wine installation in PClinuxOS 2010. To get the toolboxes and everything look normal I had to install GDI+ (gdiplus) via Winetricks.
However the drawing area is still messed up after this even if the toolboxes look fine. On one

Pentium Samba server?
I have got an old pentium back. It is an Intel 66Mhz processor, 16MB RAM and
a 2 gigabyte harddrive. Could it be used as a dedicated samba server and
what Linux disto would work well? I was thinking of Debian 3 or Slackware.
Can samba act as a 2000 PDC?

CentOS versus Scientific
Hey folks,
I was just reminded of the Scientific distro, which on the surface
appears to be quite similar to CentOS even when the developers over
there are rather coy about which Enterprise Linux distro they base
theirs on.
I wonder if anyone here has done a comparison of the two that they'd
care to share.
I work in a Scientific Research Lab (Stem Cell Research) and am
wondering if there is

java packages - tomcat5?
Have the jpackage-packaged things like tomcat5 been moved into the disto
repositories? Do they work with sun java? In particular, tomcat5 used
to require jta. The one yum installs doesn't mention it now, but it
also doesn't work with sun java 1.5 installed the jpackage way. What am
I missing?

Default number of serial ports
Hi all:
My question is concerning the default number of serial ports compiled
into the standard CentOS 4.x kernel. It looks like the default is 8, is
that correct, and is there a simple way to raise the default that
without needing to recompile the kernel? I looked though the /proc
directories and I do not see anything there. I have two 8 port serial
cards, which bring my total serial

4.10.2 not connecting to (old) NAS
I am running the PCLinux OS (kernel 5.10.12) and it has recently
upgraded samba to 4.10.2.?? With the upgrade the connection to my NAS
units have ceased to work.?? The NAS is a DLink DNS-343 (old but they
work).?? I have five of them in my network and use them for secondary
storage so only spin them up when I need them.
My last access to the NAS was about a month ago before the upgrade to

4.10.2 not connecting to (old) NAS
Thank you Rowland - adding "ntlm auth = yes" in the global section and
rebooting the machine has provided access once again to the NAS.
In answer to your questions - the smb.conf was from the PCLOS machine.
Question - I had tried sec=ntlm in the mount statement without it being
in the smb.conf - did that not work because ntlmv1 had not been enabled?
As to the question marks, that

Compiling and Configuring Samba for Mandrival
Mates,
Since nobody is building binaries for mandriva, I thought I would share
a quick cheat sheet for those who want to compile from source to update 10.2
from 3.20 to 3.23. Here goes:
1. Download samba-3.0.23b.tar.gz to your local machine (a given...)
2. Unzip it: tar xzvf samba-3.0.23b.tar.gz
3. Change to the source directory: cd samba-3.0.23b/source/
4. Make sure you are

New install not working
OK, it has nothing to do with trying to run a setup.exe off of floppy.
I've installed 1.0.r4 -- yes, it's kind of old, but seems to be the
latest binary available for FreeBSD 7 -- and it doesn't want to run
anything I've tried. For example:
$ rm -rf .wine
$ wine notepad

FLAC CD Archive
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

The recent discussions about archiving CDs with flac prodded me to get
abcde working again. I've filed a debian bug report with patches to the
latest abcde that enable generating a toc file from the disc with cdrdao
(rips CD-TEXT data and creates index points from subcode data).
Combined with my patches to toc2cue, this is enough to rip even

Help installing software with multiple cd's
I have been trying to install several games, and all of the ones that have more than one disk fail, one way or another, at the point of changing cd's. Some (doom3) just quit [there exists an alternative plan for doom3], and others (Baldur's Gate-SoA) lock up the cd and won't let go. The only way to get the cd out is to kill the installer. I found the instructions on WineHQ, which say
