Unknown Files in /tmp
Hi All, 2 days ago, I used skype on my laptop, which hadn't seen the net before then. I successfully spoke with my mother, and had no problems. Yesterday, I had what I believe was an unauthorized access to my laptop, so, I changed all passwds on my smoothwall box, and also put the local host onto a new subnet. Today, I experienced some weirdness with skype, where, I could hear/be heard,

WoW, and most other games, do not run under Wine.
I've recently installed Wine onto my ubuntu intrepid ibex box and I'm having endless issues when it comes to running games. Right now, I'm specifically trying to play World of Warcraft and I am receiving graphical issues that cause the game to be unplayable. These bugs are widespread and i cannot see anything in the game's window. The laptop is running on an Intel GMA965Q. I've

Interesting problem getting wine onto my computer
I live in Bangladesh and have just installed Ubuntu dapper drake onto my shiny new desktop. The village where I live has no land lines or broad band so I connect to the internet through my old laptop using a GPRS mobile phone and Nokia PC suite run on Windows XP. I want to download wine onto my new computer so I can run PC suite and can continue accessing the internet via mobile but using

Trying to add a wine application I've added in other Ubuntu systems, but not working
I am running Jaunty in a Dell M6400 laptop. I have a collection of electronic books with an index and search program to run searches on them. This is a Windows-based text-index and search utility, and I have installed it successfully using WINE in many earlier versions of Ubuntu as well as in another computer running Jaunty. But in my DELL M6400 when I installed it, initially it wouldn't

Run World Of Warcraft on Wine?
Hello, Since I've used Ubuntu 10.10 and had recently been upgraded to 11.04 I have seen various changes, but the one thing that concerns me is because the fact that every time I try to install World of Warcraft onto my laptop it seems that the Start-up screen (Usually before you hit the Play button). there are gray lines around the sides and the game itself doesn't play as well in Windows

Roaming profiles on a small network
Hi list, I intend to run an old pentium 133 as a linux-based fileserver on my home network (I have to use windows for my main machine and laptop!) Im having great diffiuculty synching the data, email, etc on my laptop and desktop, so I thought I might configure samba to act as a DC and use roaming profiles to make sure that my data is always synched. My question is this: is it worth the effort?

Starting with Samba - first impressions
I promised John yesterday that I would document my experiences as I tried to convert this ugly two-headed network I've inherited (see thread titled "Having Samba integrate/replace existing mixed Unix/Windows network" from yesterday) into an easy-to-manage Samba-based network. I took the first baby steps and I thought that it would be interesting/useful to post semi-regularly

Using locator() to digitise
Hi Folks, I'm contemplating using locator() to digitise external graphics. To set context, I would be using X11 display on Linux. To pre-empt the obvious comment: I've found on the R site the suggestion to use the 'pixmap' package. I've tried this, and it works; but it involves building a big R object (the internal pixmap representation), and this chokes my somewhat puny

SSD for Centos SWAP /tmp & /var/ partition
Has anyone actually used a SSD in a Centos setup? My little experiment with a s/h WD drive for /tmp and SWAP partitions kicked the bucket on Wednesday, when the poor WD drive caught the click-of-death. It was a s/h drive to start with and lasted about 4 months. But that was without the /var/log/ partition being written to it, as I mounted that back onto /var/log from the original drive. So

WOW unplayable because of graphical error
I downloaded Wine, coppied World of Warcraft from my computer with Windows Vista on to an external drive, then coppied it onto this computer with ubuntu 9.10. I can start it, but once I press play on the updater it looks like this [/img]http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac160/magnax1/WOW.png?t=1277843894 I have a Dell laptop, without a dedicated graphics card, but WOW worked on it when I had

Newbie can't figure out error messages
I am trying to use rsync to create a mirror of my Linux laptop (Ubuntu Dapper amd-64) onto a USB drive hanging on a Windows 2000 desktop over ethernet. The folder I want to rsync to is /laptop and the USB drive is mounted at /media/smb using the following: sudo mount -t smbfs -o username=jcj //Devil4/Linux_Backups /media/smb Mounting works fine -- the mount command shows the USB drive as

Best practice in small office
Hi folks, I've been reading the definitive guide to samba3 and Samba3 by example as well as scouring on line for advice. Sometimes however I find different suggested solutions to the same problem, so perhaps the list can give me some help with current strategies for these issues. We are a small office and are currently going through an IT refurb. Previously we've had a mix of laptops and

Using Linux as a first/second stage boot.
Hi, I have a laptop that can boot from the network, but not from a CD or USB device. I was wondering if there was a way to netboot the linux kernel, and then type a command that would restart the boot process, but boot from the CD instead, and use the previous linux kernel's CD rom driver to read the new kernel image, and therefore boot from the CD in just the same way a BIOS would.

R Compilation error on Ubuntu
Hi I bought a new laptop HP dv9500 just a week ago and installed a Ubuntu gutsy ribbon on this laptop. I wanted to install Fedora but there are more threads on Ubuntu, so I decided to install Ubuntu. After hours of struggle in configuring x server/graphic card stuff, I installed R for Gutsy ribbon using "sudo apt-get install g77 r-core'. Now when I tried to install 'sp' package

non-bootable dvd image
Hi all; I downloaded the centos 4.3 image onto my linux box and used k3b to burn a DVD iso image. It seemed to work fine. I have an SuSE laptop and I want to setup a CentOS VM via Vmware 5.5 If I insert the dvd and boot the new vm I get 'no operating system found' It seems to be a non-bootable dvd. Is there something additional I need to do when burning the dvd image to make it

Can't see my home directory
I have a strange problem. I use samba for most of my network activity, even though most of it is linux to linux. On every machine except this laptop I can see my home directory on the file/print/mail server. On this laptop I can see all the other shares, but not my home directory. Since everything works on the others, the server end must be OK. That puts the problem fair and square onto
