I really hope this is not a bad question (as in he''s abusing the

Right now I''m getting a

smbldap-useradd -w problem
I'm in the process of learning Samba and evaluating it as a possible
replacement for Windows NT servers in our office next year. I have set up a
small test network comprised of one NT 4 (SP6a) Workstation, one Windows
2000 Pro (SP3) and one Fedora Core 3 running samba 3.0.11 as a PDC. I'm
using LDAP as the passdb backend with smbldap-tools 0.8.7-1. The Windows
2000 Pro machine can join the

Patents on algorithms harm data analytic services
Cologne, 10.12.00
Dear Sir,
Dear Madam,
We are concerned about the possibility that the European Commission might introduce software patenting into the European Community because we think this will harm our profession.
We make our living on data management and statistical analyses. Modern statistics crucially depends on algorithms [cf. Venables, W. N., & Ripley, B. D. (1999). Modern applied

Call Recording using MixMonitor - close, but would like some more words of wisdom.
Dan et al;
This looks like a perfect solution.
However, I have one issue. If I initiate the macro manually (put it in
the proper context/dialplan) it works. I see the *.wav file being
created and growing in the /var/spool/asterisk/monitor directory.
If I try to implement it adding the MixMonApp =>
*1,self/both,Macro,mixmon to the [applicationmap] in features.conf, I
cannot get it to

The wisdom - or otherwise - of replacing outright rather than merely appending to the example smb.conf file shipped with SAMBA during new server commissioning?
I have a general question regarding smb.conf and I was hoping that some
of the rather more knowledgeable and experienced people here could
please comment please?
I am currently setting my various SAMBA systems up via some
shell-scripts. Within these scripts, I remove the stock smb.conf shipped
with Samba and replace this with an empty smb.conf file to which I add
my own configuration options

Pierce's criterion
Hello all,
I would like to rigorously test whether observations in my dataset are
outliers. I guess all the main tests in R (Grubbs) impose the assumption
of normality. My data is surely not normal, so I would like to use
something else. As far as I can tell from wikipedia, Peirce's criterion is
just that.
The data I am interested in testing is: 1) Continuous on the unit interval

Job opening at the Fed
The Money and Reserves Analysis section in the Division of Monetary Affairs at
the Federal Reserve Board in Washington has an opening for an Information
Systems Analyst (ISA). The job listing can be found here:
http://careers.peopleclick.com/jobposts/Client40_FRBOG/BU1/External/281-813.htm
This is not really a statistics position, although it does involve SAS (and
possibly R, see below)

Upgrade Novell 4.11 to Samba 3.0.7 wisdom needed
Has anybody done such a thing as this? I'm looking to make this transition as
smooth as possible. I have the new fileserver up and running, and I'm using
rsync to keep the Novell data current on the Samba server. Any words of
advice on transferring the users and groups and permissions over to the new
server in the least painful way possible? I have some idea that Novell uses

Parsing a bit code file
I am trying to parse LLVM IR from a bit code file. I went through the

dump.cpp

Looking for wisdom - One Asterisk system - Multi-incoming trunks
I'm pretty new to this whole Asterisk system & VoIP thing, but being a
programmer by trade the complexity didn't scare me off (at least not yet)...
I have setup an Asterisk system for my home & home office. My wife & I
run two separate businesses from home, and we have a general family home
phone line as well. The cost of all these lines with analog carriers

R for economists (was: Almost Ideal Demand System)
Hi,
I did not find any web page about using R in economics and econometrics so
far. However, this does not mean that there is none (searching with google
for "R" and "economics" gives many pages about economics and a name like
Firstname R. Lastname on it ;-)).
Does anybody in the list does know such a web page?
If not, I will be happy if you, Ajay, could build and

IMAP extensions & their meanings
I know that is is not really a Dovecot problem; however, I was
wondering where I could get a complete list of the terms used in the
'capability' line. I have not had any success in finding out what
things like "XLIST" refer to. I don't believe that is one that Dovecot
uses; however, I have seen it with other IMAP servers, plus lots of
other flags that I do not understand.

calculating average ratings and other imponderables
Okay, this *should* be easy, but it isn''t, although I reserve the right to
smack myself upside the head if it is:
Assume that a smart has_many ratings, and a rating belongs_to a smart (the
models are fine). Each rating has a column smart_id.
Each smart, then, has many ratings, with a column called "rating" that is
an int (1-10).
I want to find, say, the ten smarts with

reassessing the HCL ratings scale
Here is our current rating scale for the HCL:
1 = protocol based on reverse engineering
2 = based on fragments of publicly available protocol
3 = based on publicly available protocol
4 = vendor provided protocol
5 = vendor provided protocol and hardware
I was going to suggest a few changes to the ratings we have assigned (for instance, not having a rating of "5" with an

R vs Matlab: which is more "programmer friendly"?
Hi,
The department of economics at our university (Budapest) is planning a
course on numerical methods in economics. They are trying to decide
which software to use for that, and I would like to advocate R. The
other alternative is Matlab.
I have found comparisons in terms of computational time for matrix
algebra, but I don't think that is relevant: the bottleneck for
economists is usually

elo v1.0.0: Elo Ratings
Dear useRs,
I'm pleased to announce the v1.0.0 major release of the "elo" package on CRAN (https://cran.r-project.org/package=elo).
This package implements a flexible framework for calculating Elo ratings of any two-team-per-matchup system (chess, sports leagues, 'Go', etc.). It is capable of evaluating a variety of matchups, Elo rating updates, and win probabilities, all
