2.0.x: terribly slow smbclient tar extension
Since the release of the first 2.0.x (jan1999) I noted that smbclient '\\server\share' -Tx filename.tar was terribly slow. smbclient '\\server\share' -Tc filename.tar is as fast as 1.9.18. If I use smbclient from 1.9.18 the performance is high (with the same target pc). These are some tests with: - Win98pc - lan 10Mbps - samba-2.0.5-pre4/rh60 - a dir containing 1,2MB in 52

Help with running childrens cd-rom in Xubuntu
Hello, I'm a newb with wine and not terribly bright with linux. I am trying to get some of the kids' games to work in Xubuntu. I got wine installed, and it seems I got the hot wheels game installed, after finding that I needed to run everything as sudo. Now when I run the program in the windows window I see a low-res video of a cd-rom being inserted into a disk drive, presumably

Windows XP SP2 slow printing solution
Hello all, I spent a couple of days figuring this out, and I found some related posts without solutions, so I figured I would sent this to the list. We run a small local network here with a mixed bag of Windows XP / 2000 / Linux clients. We have been using Samba to allow access to a set of shared printers using a linux server. We also have a separate linux server that handles our file serving

Slow listing of mapped drives in Explorer
We recently moved our Linux file servers from Debian Woody to Debian Etch (v4.0r3). We use the current stable Debian Samba package which is version 3.0.24. Since moving to this Samba version from 2.2.8a-0.1 we see that Windows clients are very slow to list the 5 network drives mapped by our domain login script in Explorer or "My Computer". It can take 10 seconds or so before the drives

slow lstat on 3.12 disperse volume
Hi We've recently done some testing with a 3.12 disperse cluster. The performance of filesystem stat calls was terrible, taking multiple seconds. We dumped client side stats to see what was going on and noticed gluster STAT was the culprit. tpcdump shows a STAT call being sent and replied to quite fast, but still the client hangs for multiple seconds before returning. After downgrading

Slow debugger starts of LLVM tools
David Jones via llvm-dev <llvm-dev at lists.llvm.org> writes: > GDB likes to load all symbols from shared libraries up front. And on > x86_64 your main executable is really just another shared library. Yes, but does gdb reload everything on each execution? Every time I execute "run" I see the same slow behavior. Loading the symbols for small tools like llvm-rc takes

NT logon ok but XP logon very slow
Hi, Our environment: HP-UX 11.00 server / Samba 3.0.21a as PDC / OpenLDAP backend We're developping a migration from AS/U to a Samba PDC. Currently we have following problem: logging onto an NT4 workstation is almost instantaneous, but when logging onto an XP workstation, this happens: (1) We type the user and password in Windows logon. (2) Windows logon immediately accepts user and

Access Database SLOW
I've got a user that wants an Access database shared out. I've got a decent machine serving out the directory (300 MHz Pentium II) running RedHat 5.0 (kernel 2.0.34) with Samba 1.9.17p4 (RPM is samba-1.9.17p4-3). I've created a simple share entry in the smb.conf file: [global] debug level = 1 browsable = yes comment = Samba under Linux (RedHat 5.0) domain master = yes

OT: Why slow mail-check on wireless?
Ok this is admittedly OT, but when you want network advice you go to where network gurus hang... When popping mail from my primary mail server (Linux) from my linux laptop a simple mail check takes 15 seconds to connect when using a wireless nic (802.11g) and 1 second using the hardwired nic. Popping my backup mailserver (also linux) which is sitting RIGHT BESIDE the primary takes one second

terribly annoying bug with POSIXlt : one o'clock is midnight?
Apparently, as.POSIXlt takes one o'clock as the start of the day : > as.POSIXlt(0,origin="1970-01-01") [1] "1970-01-01 01:00:00 CET" > as.POSIXlt(0,origin="1970-01-01 00:00:00") [1] "1970-01-01 01:00:00 CET" > as.POSIXlt(0,origin="1970-01-01 23:59:59") [1] "1970-01-02 00:59:59 CET" Cheers -- Joris Meys Statistical

Installing Civ 3
I tried to install Civ 3 the other day. I think I might have got it installed right. Then when i went to run it, it did not work properly while detecting the cd in the cd rom tray. I figured i would ask this question to see what everyone thinks. Could it be that Civ 3 does not run due to the speed of the cd while running "through" wine? Im pretty sure that Civ3 requires a specific read

Problems running apps from Samba 2.0.0 share on NT 4.0
Ever since I upgraded from Samba 1.9.18 to 2.0.0, I've been having problems with applications started from a Samba share dying silently, or with an Illegal Instruction message, on NT 4.0 Workstation. Since the only configuration change has been the Samba upgrade, that would seem to be the orgin of the problem. Below is my smb.conf file, in case I have something configured (or not configured)

Warcraft 3: TFT or RoC in Wine
I'm trying to get Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne or Reign of Chaos to work in wine version 1.3.35 on Gentoo x86_64 kernel 3.0.6 (oss USE flag is included). However, although installation of both games went smoothly, no matter which one I use, I get this error when I attempt to play: ($GAME) was unable to detect a disc in your CD-ROM drive. Please make sure your ($GAME) disc is in your CD-ROM

terribly naive question
Dear R-Representative: I am very new to R and I have to admit that I am not the cleverest of users. So, please bear with me. I have installed R on my Mac OS 8.6. I am interested in eventually using the packages -- many useful ones have been downloaded with the basic R software. I have looked through some of the manuals, however, I have not yet found how to access the commands in these packages.
