Testing IP Instances in 62 on vmware
The network fails for the zone when i try to setup it with ip-type exclusive. Its on a vmware server 1.0.2 using a emulated e1000g, this is the only current way i have got to test it with :( Any ideas on how to find out what the problem is? Is it that the emulation done by vmware can''t do this? I think it would be useful for this to work in vmware, as you can add many virtual nics to

VMWare vs. KVM - recommendations?
Okay, I'm being noisy today. I have VMWare Server 1.0.8 installed on my CentOS desktop, and it runs my XP and CentOS guests just fine, though I don't use them much. I'm considering moving to either VMWare Server 2.0 or switching to KVM instead, mainly because VMWS 1 is now obsolete and also because its limitations on video configurations is really annoying - I have a 22"

Re: VM Performance using KVM Vs. VMware ESXi
Thanks Dominique & Daniel. Looks like i need to upgrade my VMs kernel to make it aware of virtio. Found this information from this link: http://wiki.libvirt.org/page/Virtio#Disk_.28block.29_device_driver I tried without upgrading the Kernel and as soon as i start my VM it got into Kernel Panic. I will try using virtio after upgrading my VMs kernel. Thanks for all the responses and

Server Virtualization
Hello, I work for a school in a New Zealand university and we are wanting to implement Server Virtualization for both CentOS and Windows systems. So I thought I would ask here what experience people have had with this and what issues that you all think should be considered? From my own research it seems that VMWare or Xen are really the two major products to be considered, are there any

Slow clock on CentOS 4.4 in a VMware VM
I'm running a CentOS 4.4 VM on a Windows XP host with VMware Server, and have the problem that my clock runs too slow (it happens in VMware Workstation as well). It loses between 30 and 45 seconds every minute! This is a known problem and can be fixed by adding "nosmp noapic nolapic" to the boot command according to VMware tech note ID 1420. However, despite adding these

A Performance Comparison of Hypervisors
Obviously not a very fair comparison [1]. I can''t see how this was done well at all. VMWare are a bit silly to release stuff like this, just lowers the whole game. VMWare ESXi & CentOS5.4
I have a brand new Dell Poweredge T310 server with 4G ram and 1TB raid-5 hard drive in it. I Really only need to be able to run a copy of CentOS 5.4 on it, but I'm wondering if in the build process should I stick on ESXi 4 and then run CentOS as a vm? This would give me the options to roll out other VM's if I want over the life of the server (which I likely won't need) but the

[RESEND PATCH 1/3] x86/vmware: Use tsc_khz value for calibrate_cpu()
After aa297292d708, there are separate native calibrations for cpu_khz and tsc_khz. The code sets x86_platform.calibrate_cpu to native_calibrate_cpu() which looks in cpuid leaf 0x16 or msrs for the cpu frequency. Since we keep the tsc_khz constant (even after vmotion), the cpu_khz and tsc_khz may start diverging. tsc_init() now does cpu_khz = x86_platform.calibrate_cpu(); tsc_khz =

vmware server 1.0.4 and centos 4.5 i386 install
Hi all, I tried to install centos 4.5 i386 as a guest on an AMD x2 machine today. It told me it did not find any install media. I had created an 8G disk for it. Is there a SCSI driver I need to "Add" when prompted? I have never used SCSI and dont know which SCSI controller vmware is emulating. What driver do I need to load? I was then surprised some time later when my machine locked

CentOS 4.2 and VMWare
Has anyone successfully installed CentOS 4.2 within VMWare 5 and have it run successfully. I tried doing this last night, but after the install, it cannot boot. It hangs at the GRUB message. I have used CentOS 4.1 many times within VMWare without problems. I did a search and found some where people have had this problem, but not within VMWare. The problems seem to have been related to SCSI

Networking issues with OpenSolaris/Dom0 or VMware Fusion
Hi: I got OpenSolaris 2008.05 running as dom0 under VmWare fusion on my MacBook pro. Using the instructions from Dipleep''s blog http://blogs.sun.com/dkumar/entry/how_to_create_domu_in Everything seems okay except the networking. When booting OpenSolaris (without dom0) the pcn0 interface works just fine but when booting Solaris xVM version them pcn0 does not work (ie) I get failures

Can VMWare modules run alongside in XEN kernel?
I would like to have VMware modules running in the XEN kernel, NOT in DOM0 kernel but outside at the hypervisor level, is that possible? Architecturally, I noticed that xen subbranch does not implement any modules loading. If I were to load the VMware modules directly as an ELF image, will it break any existing architectural feature in XEN? Thanks :-).
