Intel i7-940, DX58S0 motherboard, Radeon X1950 Pro video card
This computer is my main desktop machine --- an Intel i7-940 CPU and DX58S0
motherboard with a Radeon X1950 Pro video card. It's currently running Fedora 11
and working just fine.
However, I have been slowly moving all of my "computer stuff" off of Fedora
and onto Centos, and this (and my Acer Aspire One laptop) are the only Fedora
installations that I now have left.
Does anyone

Weird problem with WINE
I'm having a weird problem with WINE. I've tried the latest version from here, the latest version in the Ubuntu repositories. I'm using Kubuntu 11.04 x86_64. I'm running AMD Phenom II x4 @ 2.5 GHz, 6 GB of RAM, ATi Radeon x1950 PRO with 512 MB vRAM. Don't know which display drivers I'm using, its whatever I'm working with. I can play any game with no problems...except

Gaming support with different hardware vendors (esp. ATI)
Hi all!
I recently got an ATI Radeon HD 3850 card and now noticed that with the
fglrx driver many games that look well in AppDB do not run properly on
this hardware (Supreme Commander ingame: flickering static garbage, Prince
of Persia SoT has several issues that completely garble ingame graphics).
Older games (not using shaders among other things) seem to run fine - need
to do more testing

Centos and RadeonHD 4570
Hi guys,
Recently I've done a bad bad thing, buying a laptop with an ATI card.
The card itself is supposed to be quite decent performance wise, but
the ATI drivers still suck a lot.
I haven't yet tried booting Centos on this laptop, but I used a Fedora
12 LiveCD. Fedora displays things nicely, but no 3D accel (I like to
play OpenArena/Tremulous every now and then).

Good Graphics Card for Wine?
I am new to wine and would like some tips on what a good graphics card for gaming on wine would be. I don't play the latest on greatest by any means but my current card (x1950 Pro) won't even run HL 2 (I assume because of the crap drivers).
I am looking for a cheap switch/upgrade. I am been looking at this

help with heatmap - how to remove annoying "X" before numeric values?
Hello All,
I have a simple question based on how things are labeled on my heat map;
particularly, there is this annoying "X" that appears before the numeric
value of all the labels of my columns.
Let's say I have the following silly data, stored in "temp.txt"
1905 1910 1950 1992 2011 2020

Steam crashes after login - any troubleshooting t
The Steam client crashes after I login. After submitting my credentials, Steam displays a dialog box informing me the client is 'connecting'. I then see the Steam main page and a blank news page displayed for roughly a second or so before the client crashes.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 maverick which I've installed on a usb flash drive using a capser-rw file for persistence.

Combining logical operators to extract columns from a dataframe
Hi R-helpers,
I have a dataframe (called data) with 100 columns, the columns of which are
named with integers ranging from 1900 to 1999.
I wish to extract those columns which names are >=1950 and <=1970.
I tried:
data2<-subset(data,select=(names(data)>=1950 & names(data)<=1970))
but that doesn't work.
Any ideas?
Thanks! Mark

Which effects are 3D and which are 2D?
AMD is dropping support for the R300-R500 cards in their official drivers:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd_r500_legacy&num=1
As the current open source drivers do not support 3D, I'd like to know
which Compiz effects use 3D and which use 2D. Thanks.

Apparently no swap configured
Hello,
I'm in a slightly unusual situation and I'd really appreciate some advice.
I installed CentOS 5.2 on a server about a month ago.
Today I happened to check the 'free' command and noticed that the Swap
line reads as follows:
Swap: 0 0 0
I'm pretty certain that when I installed the OS and created a custom
partition table, that I defined a

ordinal regression
Dear colleagues,
i am carrying out an ordinal regression model. I try it on SPSS but I "flirt" with R as well. I have a few questions.
1. What is the most reliable/tested/trusted package for ordinal regression in the R world?
2. Also, I have a statistical question. What is the danger of having to many 'empty cells' in ordinal regression? How many empty cells are too many? Do

Bad display glitches with Ultima Online
I'm having trouble getting Ultima Online to work on my system. I installed from the Age of Shadows CD and patched from there. It installed fine, patched up ok, but when it loads the actual game my display goes utterly haywire. I'm getting 2 badly distorted mini UO screens and it looks like someone randomised the pixels on half my screen. When I move the mouse around I can move said

7.2-PRE amd64 panic when starting Xorg
Hi,
I've installed 7.2-PRERELEASE, csup on 20090423 at around 19:00 UTC.
When I rebooted after installing world, X started (xdm in /etc/ttys)
and immediately panicked the system, even before switching to the new
VTY. I removed all ports and installed Xorg from today's ports HEAD,
same result. This is the case with my old xorg.conf and a new one
from 'Xorg -configure'.

Hmisc Dotplot with confidence intervals and panel.points problem
Hello useRs,
I have a question regarding the function Dotplot from the Hmisc package: I want two things:
1) confidence intervals around the dots
2) some additional "annotation" points plotted in the graphic
I can easily achieve (1) by constructing an appropriate object with Cbind. But for (2) when I use the panel=function argument the confidence intervals of the original plot are gone.

A consistent set of expectations does wonders for debugging odd-ball
occurrences. Why learn the idiosyncrasies of two distros when one
suffices? Just start with a minimal CentOS install on
