VirtualDub and enconding with DivX, XviD
Hello,
I am trying to get the latest wine (Wine 20030219, fake windows) working
with the
GordianKnot (0.27). Unfortunately, Virtual Dub is not be able to compress a
avs-file with the DivX-codec. It crashes if trying to. Also, it would be
nice to compress an
mpeg-source with Xvid but also it crashes. BTW, VirtualDub does
not list it in its codecs window ?f "msvfw32" is set to

Why is vp31 codec 2x - 3x slower than DivX codec ?
I have a simple test program which encodes, decodes and displays a single video stream ( at 2-3 fps ). It takes about 15% of CPU time when it uses DivX codec, but 35% when the VP31 codec is active. Is there any way to speed encoding/decoding with VP31 ? Or maybe VP31 is just much slower than DivX ?

mpeg4/xvid/divx vs. theora
Hi there,
I have an elementary question.
Although theora can be placed in the same class of codecs as MPEG-1, -2, -4
why is there no greater usage of this codec?
On the bigger part of web sites trailers or short videos are encoded with
some mpeg codec. Why is theora still so rarely used and unfamiliar although
it perfomes very well from my point of view?
Is it, because
- the whole mpeg family is

Vorbis in DivX
Hello all
Could you please tell me if and how Vorbis is used for the audio in
DivX?
Is it still encapsulated within ogg container format in DivX or does
DivX
contain raw Vorbis encoded packets?
Any clues or pointers would be helpful.
Thanks & regards

OGM and GStreamer
Well, actually most OGM files do have a subtitle track, often in
multiple langauges.
Also, re 2. Keyframe seeking in OGM is generally a bit rough because ogm
files can contain almost any codec as the video track, usually xvid or divx.
re 1. As a general rule you shouldn't be trying to make any more ogm
files :) So chances are the ogg muxer is not accepting the connection,
because it

How to make Vorbis popular
Ogg Vorbis is still not known by the mainstream and not widely used
these days.
I've been thinking about this... MP3 is so popular because people can
download music for free (and thus pirating music).
I recommend Vorbis to everybody I know, but most of them refuse to even
try it because it's not popular (or because they are hardcore MP3
zealots), which results in a circle (little people

Problem with Divx codec in VirtualDub
Greetings..
I've been trying to use Virtualdub for converting videos, but each time I
click on Save to AVI it gets stuck if I try to use the Divx Codec version
4.X. If I tell it not to use the codec everything works well.
How can I do to let it use that codec? I have a Debian Sarge system running
Wine 09-04-2002. I use a fake-windows instalation but I can get DLL files
from Windows XP

<hmm -- you make a good point. However note that Divx is quite popular in
spite of having gone with AVI format, so your logic doesn't hold in that
case. <Frankly though I sort of agree, in that Divx would have been even
more popular and cause less headaches

Re: [vorbis-dev] ACM codec
My concern is primarly the 'marketing' aspect. If UCI, or MCF, or any other interface, is adopted by the toolmakers, then that's a perfectly good solution.

OGG + DivX ?
Hi
There have been some discussions regarding OGG as audio stream in DivX video at http://forums.projectmayo.com/. Is there or will there be an OGG codec like Frauhofer MPEG 3 & Microsoft Audio?
This could boost the usage of OGG (mainly underground?). :)
But on the other hand it could give OGG bad reputation when associated with 'illegal' copies of video. :(

[OT-ish] WebM/Ogg VP8 streaming
Hi all,
Sorry for the VP8 question on the Theora list, but I think all the
relevant people are here :)
I'm using Icecast to distribute some Ogg Theora streams at the moment
with a view to adding VP8 along side these in future. Ideally I'd just
use Ogg VP8+Vorbis, I know there is a mapping for this already but how
much support from the browsers can I expect for this configuration?

Open Source Video Codec and Container (alternative to Xvid)
Hi CentOS users
I am running a forum with small video clips (from YouTube and others). I
convert those Macromedia Flash videos with:
$ mencoder example.flv -ovc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=1000:autoaspect
-vf pp=lb -oac mp3lame -lameopts fast:preset=standard -o example.avi
I use mencoder RPM from Dag Wieers

Current state of theora & Windows port?
Hello everyone,
I'm developing software for a marketing company which creates multimedia
presentations. We're currently using proprietary Windows software, but
are looking for a royalty-free cross-platform solution. It's important
that the solution is royalty- and patent-free because the presentations
are copied and given out in large quantities for free (as in beer ;-)

Theora file size

I was surprised with size of Theora files and thought
of feedback.
Following 1minute duration Theora and Xvid files were
made from a y4m file. The resolution is 1280x720:

2. Ogg/Theora Q7 31MB
3. Ogg/Theora Q8 38MB
4. Ogg/Theora Q9 49MB
5. Ogg/Theora Q10 61MB
The Xvid file was made using mencoder by 2 passes with

Video Codec problems
I'm having a problem with the Windows Media Player. Any avi/wmv/others that I try to download I receive the following error:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.
Someone told me to go to this URL:?? http://www.vp3.com/cgi-bin/getvp3.pl

Quality of vp3.2 codec?
How good is the video compression in vp3.2?
For example, how does it compare (bit rate & quality) to mpeg1, mpeg2,
Divx, real Video 8+, Windows Media, etc. etc.
It being open source is nice and all, but if it can't be reasonably
competitive then there isn't much point to it.
I just haven't seen anything that compares vp32 to anything else.
(Although to be honest, I haven't
