newbie install question
I have an ASUS eePC with the default linux installation (Xandros I believe). I would like to install wine to run a custom application. However, I can not figure out which version of wine to download. Will any of them work? If not which one should I use?
Thanks for any and all help.

Kingsoft Writer, etc.
Latest PCWorld mag had a nice writeup on Kingsoft Office software, which
comes in 3 flavors, the lowest of which is free, so I d/l'ed it and
installed it in Wine,
version 1.4-1pclos2012--the latest version the pclos distro has. It
seemed to install OK, but it won't open any file, and it won't open even
a blank file so you
could write on it. (Just looking at Writer, for the

problems with running dns9
Hi: new to wine, using it in PCLinuxOS (most of the users seems to be
using ubuntu); installation seemed to go ok, but trying to run gave
error message about was not fully installed, could not find DOCOBJ.DLL.
I found the dll, downloaded it (in windows) copied to system32, but this
did not change the error message. What next?

dns9
HI: I am new to trying to use wine, so forgives stupid questions. I
tried recently to use wine to install Dragon Naturally Speaking 9, using
the instructions of Nancy Cragin. I am using PCLinuxOS and not ubuntu
but none of the code seems to matter. First problem is that the disks
would not completely copy to my home directory. There were several cab
files that linux could not read or

Unknown rootkit causes compromised servers
Here is the applicable article:
http://www.linux.com/feature/125548
There are links in the above article that explain tests for the system
and what is currently known about the rootkit.
Apparently initial access is NOT via any vulnerability but just guessed
root passwords.
There are currently 2 methods to see if you are infected:
1. In some cases, the root kit causes you to not be able to

ASUS Eee R cookbook
Hi all,
Having seen a few messages regarding the ASUS Eee PC (p701) and R, and
then buying one and trying to get R installed on it, I thought there
might be a few people on the list who would appreciate a cookbook on how
to do it. It's a nice little piece of machinery, running Xandros 4 Linux
(seems to be compatible with Debian Etch) and set up for the person who
wants to do all those

R on an ASUS eee PC, continued - installing packages
Dear all,
I just went through the process of installing R on an eeePC 900 running
Linux. As a Windows useR utterly ignorant about Linux, I'd never have
done it without reading your posts and the R Wiki, so first of all:
thank you!
Next, taking up your thread from some weeks ago, I thought this could be
useful for somebody else too, so here's what I did:
1) I followed wolfgang's

Asus eee and wine.
Hello guys i'm a new asus eee user, you know the small umpc running the Xadnros OS,and since its not alla that bad i'm thinking of sticking to it instead of installing windwos XP.I do need though to run some windows apps,so i heard that wine should be my weapon of choice for this purpose!
So anyway i'm not familiar with linux-like setup procedures so i followed a guide on the net for

Centos on eeePC
Hello all,
Are there any experiences for CentOS 5 on one eeePC of Asus? Is to be
considered here something?
I consider myself as secondary equipment one eeePC 900 to add (here in
Germany unfortunately at present only with Windows at this time). Did
someone already gain experiences with one of the predecessor models here?

New java update?
I see there's a release today or so from Oracle of a new zero-day

I am using Winamp, Icecast2 Server, and Edcast. I believe I have set these
up properly so that I can set up and broadcast an internet radio station.
These are the links I used to help me:

Administrivia: Problems caused by Yahoo addresses
A few hours ago 20 addresses got unsubscribed from this list due to
bounces caused by Yahoo's DMARC p=reject policy:

This breaks mailing lists. Yahoo are well aware of this, but don't seem
to care:

Some quick googles only turned up articles about RHEL on Dell Laptops
in 2012 - nothing with RHEL seems to be current only with Ubuntu 14.04 .

RE: SPA 3000 - UK Replacement
First off I am totally annoyed and let down by PC World Business (PCWB part
of the Dixons Group). I ordered one of these babies from them over a month
ago. After constantly chasing them up they finally told me they couldn't
deliver, and have now only just returned the money they "stole" from me. I
only bought from them because they showed a 4-day availability stock level!

I believe the link to the described exploit is here.
