copy of smbpasswd
Hi,
I have to move our old samba file server to a new machine.
The old samba server was a RedHat8 with samba 2.2.5. The new one is SLES9
with samba 3.0.2b-3.4 SuSE
Is there a way to re-use the old smbpasswd file?
In the log-files I can see that the authentication fails when I try to
access a shared folder.
A windows client keeps on asking the login and password.
Is it possible to re-use

smbfs + wine + sourcesafe = slow
While it is amazing that Sourcesafe runs under Wine,
its performance leaves a lot to be desired.
I am using Sourcesafe with Wine (my setup is documented at
http://www.kegel.com/linux/vss-howto.html ).
The Wine I'm using is from CVS as of last week.
My workstation is a dual Pentium Xeon 1400MHz from Dell
running 2.4.10. (That's a Pentium 4 Xeon using RDRAM,
so it's probably about

Visual Sourcesafe HOWTO
I went to the trouble of setting up Visual Sourcesafe
on a Linux system recently. There was a fair amount of
futzing required, so I've documented what I had to do at
http://www.kegel.com/linux/vss-howto.html
Comments and corrections welcome. I'd also love to know how
to get this working without hardcoding NT usernames and passwords!
The commandline app appears to be fully functional

Announcing the open-ovf project and source code availibility.
Hi folks, we are announcing the availibility of source code for the
open-ovf project.

appliances. The open-ovf project is seeking contributors and users to
help establish OVF as a transparent and platform-nuetral method for
packaing virtual machine images.

rsync over ssh - lockups with pipe()
For a couple of years people have been reporting intermittent problems
with rsync over ssh freezing during a large transfer (typically
several GB). I have now gotten to the bottom of these problems, and
have written a small test program which demonstrates a deadlock in
sshd when doing large bi-directional transfers. Luckily the problem is
easily solved by modifying sshd to use socketpair() instead

Quick UNC support hack?
I ran into a situation where partial UNC support would be
helpful and easy. Visual Sourcesafe runs well under Wine
if I map \\vssServer\vssDir to a drive letter. Unfortunately,
our administrator has the line
journal_file = \\vssServer\vssDir\foo.txt
in the sourcesafe config file. This causes an error dialog box
"Bad DOS filename \\vssServer\vssDir\foo.txt".
If Wine handled UNC

RedHat 7.0 on Dell Poweredge 6300
I went to RedHats' page and found hardware requirements and it said
that the Dell Poweredge 6300 is a supported hardware. Then I went to
linuxcare.com and it does not list the machine. Before I look like a
buffoon, or continue to, Redhat will run on this machine, right? I
appreciate the help.
Thanks,

Generalized cumsum?
Is there anything like cumsum and cumprod but which allows you to
apply an arbitrary function instead of sum and product? In other words,
I want a function cumfunc(x, f) that returns a vector, so that for all n
up to the length of x
cumapply(x,f)[n] = f(x[1:n])
This would give cumsum and cumprod as special cases when f=sum or
f=prod.
I could write such a function, but I can't see

Pairwise n for large correlation tables?
Hello,
I'm using a very large data set (n > 100,000 for 7 columns), for which I'm
pretty happy dealing with pairwise-deleted correlations to populate my
correlation table. E.g.,
a <- cor(cbind(col1, col2, col3),use="pairwise.complete.obs")
...however, I am interested in the number of cases used to compute each
cell of the correlation table. I am unable to find such a

OT: Blank mails from this list
Hi all,
I apologise for this off-topic question, but wanted to hear from a
third-party as well.
Recently, like the last week or so, I've started getting blank emails from
this list.
Blank as in no message text is visible in the email.
If I do a ctrl-A however, something does get marked. Evidently there is a
message, just not visible.
This particular list is the only one I've noticed

This is NUTS!!
G'Day All;
So I purchased a Cisco 7960 and am now trying to get it configured for
*.
No can do without the variuos files/images through a FTPF server. I
configured the TFTP server on my RHES 3 box, now to get the required
CISCO files.
So I contacted CISCO to purchase the required maintenance contract so as
to gain access to the download area for the files/images. -WHAT A
FRUSTRATION!!-

Same <img> is still downloaded for several times in IE
Last time i ask the same question here that if one article item has a
default icon in front of its title, the icon will be downloaded as many
times as the article items displayed in one page in IE. I was suggested
to modify some options under development enviroment,eg:
config.cache_classes and config.action_controller.perform_caching in
development.rb are both set to true. But the problem still

DSD Approved Products
Hi,
I am considering installing several `servers' in a facility that needs
to conform
with the products listed at: DSD Approved Products
http://www.dsd.gov.au/infosec/evaluation_services/epl/dap.html
As far as i can see freebsd performs above and beyond, for all the required
criteria in the act. Can we see freebsd listed as an approved product in the
near future?

Connection reset by peer
Hi,
I run Samba 2.0.5a on Linux 2.2.12 (Slackware).
My clients get an error regularly (Windows95) "Network path not found"
and then they lose their connection completely.
The server logs the following:
[1999/09/07 17:30:01, 1] smbd/service.c:make_connection(521)
sbit12 (137.56.40.139) connect to service sbitdata as user sbit (uid=1000, gid=100) (pid 134)

'path' entry and printing in smb.conf
Hi,
Do I actually need a 'path' entry for each printer share defined in my
smb.conf? Or is 'path' redundant in this case as the only relevance it
has would be for the printing spool directory, which is defined by my
/etc/printcap for all my printers anyway?? The man page for smb.conf
seems to suggest that I do need a path entry, so should this be the same
as the spool directory

Samba 1 vs. 2, locking and Windows Terminal Server Edition
On Samba 1.9.18p10 and previous versions, each of the multiple users on
the same Windows Terminal Server Edition machine would get their own
smbd process. With Samba 2.0.x (I'm currently testing 2.0.4b), this has
changed so that every user on a WTSE machine uses the same smbd
process. File ownerships are assigned correctly, but file locking does
not work. If one user on a WTSE machine has a
