CentOS fileserver migrating to ZFS appliance
Hey folks,
I've got a CentOS / RHEL (5.x) environment and am in the process of
migrating the 5.3 file server over to an Oracle/Sun 7120 appliance.
I want to keep my main 5.3 server as our NIS server but am moving NFS
and Samba functions over to the appliance.
NFS was a no brainer as one can imagine. Samba seems a bit trickier
because of the authentication requirements in the ZFS server.

lm_sensors on Sun (x86) Hardware
Hey folks,
I'm running RHEL 5.3 on 6 boxes - and on every one of them
sensors-detect finds nothing.
5 of them are Sun fire 2250 machines, and 1 is Sunfire 4170.
Googling and searching this list does not seem to find anything.
When I log into the Sun hardware management interface (web interface)
I see that it of course is correctly detecting various temperatures of
things. But for some

Dedup (again)
Hi all,
Back in March someone asked about deduplication in Centos and I
replied I'm using LessFS.
I want to report that my overall experience is that I have performance
issue up to the point that I would like to abandon it.
The OP was asking http://www.opendedup.org/
How is it?
Thanks

lm-sensors on Sun hardware
Hey guys and gals,
Anyone have any experience with getting lm-sensors to run on Sun hardware?
In particular Sunfire x2250 and x4170
I was running 5.3 on these boxes and sensors-detect would not find
anything. I did a bit of research and as I recall thanks to this list
discovered some bugs that were affecting me, so upgraded to 5.7. CPU temp
sensors were then detected, but no fan sensors. At

CentOS and LessFS
Hi All:
We have been looking at implementing deduplication on a backup server.
>From what I have been able to find the available documentation is
pretty thin. I ended up trying to install LessFS on this CentOS 5.7
box but we have now encountered problems with fuse version.
Has anyone out there been able to get LessFS running on CentOS 5.7 and
can provide some pointers?
If not LessFS can you

emergency! linux kickstart pxe boot needed
Hey folks,
I'm at colocaiton in the middle of a big rebuild and it seems I have a
faulty CD rom in the server that I need to put Centos on via
Kickstart. So I cannot boot the Centos 5.4 net install CD.
Is PXE kickstart easy to set up? I have a laptop here with DHCP
already going. I google and a bunch of stuff comes up but it does
not look simple.
I'm just shooting htis out ther eon

GlusterFS over lessfs/opendedupe
Hi,
I'm currently running GlusterFS over XFS, and it works quite well.
I'm wondering if it's possible to add data deduplication into the mix by:
glusterfs --> lessfs --> xfs or
glusterfs --> opendedupe --> xfs
Has anybody tried doing this? We're running VM images on gluster, and I figure we could get a bit of space saving bu deduplicating the data.

OT: reset IBM Bladecenter AMM web access
Hi all,
Sorry for the OT.
Does anyone can share to how to reset an IBM Bladecenter Advance
Management Module web access?
Recently, I've got an IBM Bladecenter chassis E 8677. There's no one in
the office who knows about the IP nor the password for it.
Thank you,

gtar compression achieved
Hey folks,
I looked at the man page and don't see any way to do this - maybe it is a
function of the compression program used I dunno.
Is there any way to get gtar to report on the compression it achieved?
I can't just check file sizes because I'm writing data to tape.
The basic problem is that I know how much data is there to begin with but I
don't know how much room it took

Manual OOM killing?
Hey guys and gals,
Yesterday I had one of my scientists kill one of my servers when his
program ran amok and gobbled up all the memory, or forked too many
processes, or I'm just not exactly sure what to be honest.
Is there something I can run manually in cron to look for rampant
programs and kill them? I know that may be hard to discern but I
could also include a list if "known

monitoring space in directories
Hey folks,
Is there a Linux tool that will monitor a disk and tell me which
directories are growing over time?
I could cobble something together myself of course, but if there is already
a good off-the-shelf solution, why bother?
Even if it only checks once per day that would be fine. Graphs would be
pretty too :-)
cheers,

forcing yum to download but not install
Hey folks,
Is there any way to fake a "yum update" just to get yum to force a download
of all the files it needs, without actually installing them.
I finally have a RPM cache/proxy working and I just want to populate it.
The server I want to actually update cannot be updated until tomorrow but
I'd like to do a fake update just to force the RPMs into my cache so they

debugging RAM issues
Hey folks,
I have 1 system ( Sunfire x2250 running 5.7 ) that is having issues with
RAM, but I'm not sure how to debug it. And unfortunately it is not under
support anymore.
I started the job about 4 months ago and when I came aboard the guy who
handed stuff over to me told me this issue was on his list of things he was
unable to get to yet. He told me he'd seen errors in the past in

checking package versions in various releases
Hey folks,
I am sure there must be an easy way to do this.
I am currently running 5.3 and "yum info db4" tells me that they have
version 4.3.29.
Is that telling me that this is the version in 5.3? Or that this is
the latest version in the 5.x stream?
If the former, then how do I find out what release of the db4 software
(sleepcat berkeley db) is in 5.7?
I don't want to

Need httpd / apache RPM > 2.2.3 for 5.3
Hey folks,
It looks to me like the httpd on CentOS is stuck at 2.2.2 - what's up
with that? Even after a yum upgrade.
I need 2.2.10 or greater, and would prefer to get it via yum or at
very last an RPM if at all possible. But I cannot even find an RPM
out there. For some reason both EPEL and Dag Wieers do not even seem
to have an httpd RPM for RHEL5
Any idea where to look?

Hi all,
Remember my thread that I can''t FTP into my server? It seems that (well, what
Tom has suggested) ip_conntrack_ftp and ip_nat_ftp weren''t loaded. I don''t
know why in that particular machine mdk9.2 doesn''t load them by default,
whereas in other machine they were loaded.
I have put them in /etc/modules, and

How to preserve capital letter
Hi all,
I'm not sure whether it is samba related, but I've got this situation:
I'm sharing a clipper program with samba, and then user access it using dosemu
installed in each workstation.
The program runs fine, except, when it creates a temporary file, it creates
the filename in small letter (not in capital letter when run in DOS). Seems
that the program is having trouble with

Hi all,
This one really beats me. I''ve run out of idea how to get this right (well, I
plan to format it and replace with mdk9.2).
I''m running a gateway on mdk9.0 box using gShield. Now, since I have been
using shorewall on my notebook with great satisfaction, I want to replace
gShield with shorewall.
So, I set it with this
