CentOS4 desktop has stopped recognizing removable media - haldaemon problem?
USB sticks and cameras used to pop right up on my desktop. Now they don't. I've checked the Gnome "Drives and Media Preferences" and nothing has changed -- I have "Mount removable media when inserted" etc. (Tried toggling it off and back on, no effect.) I've logged out and back in, even rebooted. /var/log/messages shows the devices are being recognized by udev:

HAL Problems
Hi, since the last few days my system crashs at startup of gdm (on system boot). If I choose runlevel 2, the system doesn't crash. I found out, that HAL is the problem. After disabling hal (chkconfig haldaemon --off) no crashes appear. The system freezes completly so I can't look into the logfiles. I removed an reinstalled hal already, but nothing changed. I tried older kernels

CentOS 5.1 install via PXE Failure
Hi All, This has to be something simple....but it's really busting my chops. We have a PXE boot server that is used for initial installation of a number of operating systems and it works well. However the CentOS 5.1 x86_64 install is seriously broken. We've made the PXE boot images available from "centos/5/os/x86_64/images/pxeboot/" in the tftp boot etc. We've rsynced

ntsysv and chkconfig update error
We have a couple of CentOS 7 boxes that were built before I was hired to clean up the kickstart script used for C7 boxes. We had a couple of rpm packages that were pre-C7 that were used and setup the old SysV Init way using ntsysv and chkconfig on these boxes. (I finally fixed that in the newer scripts.) These are out in the field and I'm having to deal with them as they are. One thing

Device 0 (vif) could not be connected. Hotplug scripts not working.
Hi, I got this error when starting a domU on Centos 5.1 i386, Device 0 (vif) could not be connected. Hotplug scripts not working. Why is this happening ? I should restart the machine to see if this still happends after a fresh network bridge. But it's somehow a production server, I would like not to restart it, if possible. No domU is currently running. I could start domUs a week ago.

System hang during shutdown (halt)
Alle, I'm running V5.3 (newly installed) on an FJ E8020 laptop. The problem I have is when shutting down (*not* rebooting). NetworkManager fails to stop and after (during?) the postfix shutdown, the system seems to hang. I cannot access via another screen or remotely. I can't find any clues in the log files. I could use some suggestions on troubleshooting. Here are the active

PXE boot, Kickstart NFS install and %include...
I was just wondering how (or indeed if) people use the %include directive in Kickstart configuration files when building systems via NFS. I've been trying to modularise our Kickstart files a little to make things more readable, having generic defaults and role specific stuff split out into separate configs. I've tried this configuration... [root at archive kickstart]# cat

On the screen it says Exception occured and gives me the option to save it. This is that file. I dont see any odd that would cause it to crash. Can anyone help. My kickstart file is in the mix below. Seems to be related to network, my line seems fine (I think) for

winbind backend ad not working
Hi Rowland, not for all users, some users have a gidNumber not inside the range. I expected to see the users with a gidNumber insite the range. It was a classicupgrad from a very old samba3 so we have gidNumbers below 100 for some users, but we only want to have the users with a gidNumber insite the range. So we don't care about the users outside the range. Stefan > > Have you

Cleaning Up My Process Table
I'm upgrading my primary server from RH 7.2 to CentOS-4.3.ServerCD. I REALLY like the ServerCD. Who needs all the fluff that comes with a standard distro? If I want a system-config-gooey I can run Xnest [1] and ssh -X from my laptop. Anyway I have two questions: 1) How can I collectively stop all the NFS, portmap, whatever? I'm hoping it can be manipulated as a group because occationally

Programs on/off on virtual host machine
been playing with my host machine and thought some might want to see what I have on and the full list of chkconfig I have installed desktop and x windows system to bring up a desktop when I want one with startx. I turned 'off' quite a bit and yum removed quite a bit. These set of programs still allow full use as a host so far, including the startx desktop. Always afraid to remove or

Not Quite Minimal CentOS 6.2
Hi All, I a working on configuring a not-quite minimal installation of CentOS 6.2. I tried doing the "minimal" installation available with the installer, but it's a bit too minimal to be useful. So I'm cutting down from a less minimal starting place. I'm pretty familiar with 5.x, but what I'm finding in 6.2 is a lot of new stuff, and a lot of odd behavior. For example,

haldaemon crashes system?
I'm in the process of setting up CentOS 4.3 on an old 400MHz K6 and found that the system hangs within several seconds of starting haldaemon. With haldaemon disabled, everything seems to work. >From what I've read, disabling haldaemon isn't a problem, but I thought I'd ask if anyone else has seen similar problems or if anyone had any troubleshooting tips. I found a similar

Using centos and kickstart to build a minimum installation
Using centos 5.2, I want to use a kickstart file to select packages in order to have an unattended install onto a bare-metal server. Is there any way of finding out which packages I need to compile, build and run asterisk ? I generally want to build all modules in asterisk and the wct4xxp zaptel module I want to be able to not select any groups in the kickstart file, but only select
