Upgrading PHP and PHP53 on CentOS5 - Progress/Problem w/ Squirrelmail
Greetings In the attempt to upgrade the technology stack on CentOS 5 from stock PHP to PHP53 I have made some progress. Much thanks to all respondents, especially Jesus. One repository that provides a complete set of builds and seems to fulfill both PHP and PHP53 requirements is the IUS one: http://iuscommunity.org/ Repos here: http://dl.iuscommunity.org/pub/ius/stable/Redhat/5/i386/repoview/

PHP and PHP53
Greetings, We have someone requesting the use of Wordpress 3.3.1. It requires PHP 5.2 minimum. Currently, our machine is running CentOS 5.7. What are the issues/concerns in upgrading from PHP 5.1 (the current PHP rpms) to PHP53? Much thanks, Max Pyziur pyz at brama.com

PHP 5.3: IUS vs CentOS repos
I need to upgrade PHP because the latest WordPress requires one at least at 5.2.4. What are the tradeoffs of using the php53 packages provided by CentOS versus IUS? I've seen that installing the RHEL-derived php53 requires removing php first and it creates package conflicts because it doesn't provide a virtual php-common package. That suggests I should install the IUS package. Is

Centos 5.6 Implications of PGP53 ?
If one stays with Centos 5.x (currently on 5.6) is the problem/enhancement/incompatibility involving PHP53 likely to be resolved by general updates and/or the introduction of Centos 5.7 ? Paul.

centos 5 and php53
so whats the scoop on PHP53 for CentOS 5? I have a long running webserver, runs a bunch of mostly php+postgresql stuff, mostly hobby sites (clubs and local scout troops and such). has latest updates to php 5.2.10-xx but I want to install something thats insisting on php53. If I try and yum install php53, it says it conflicts with php-5.2.10 ... ok, do I remove the old PHP and install

php53 and MSSQL
[Reposted now I've joined the list, so I hopefully don't get moderated out] Hi, I've upgraded lots of machines to 5.6 (thanks!) and there was one particular machine that I'd also like to upgrade to PHP 5.3. Unfortunately it seems I can't. On the machine I have php-mssql installed, and it appears that there is no php53-mssql. php-mssql is built from the php-extras SRPM, so

Intrusion Detection Systems
Situation: We are providing hosting services. I've grown tired of the various kiddie scripts/dictionary attacks on various services. The latest has been against vsftpd, on systems that I can't easily control vs. putting strict limits on ssh. We simply have too many users entering from too many networks many with dynamic IP addresses. Enter.... thinking about LIDS or Log Based

Random Proliant Crashes CentOS 6.1
I've been seeing some random Proliant DL380 G4 64bit crashes. Each time, on the console are messages relating tojbd2/cciss and something about a waitfor 120 seconds. Is anybody else seeing anything like this? Oddly, I can't seem to find this in the logs. I guess it can't write when this happens. -- John Hinton 877-777-1407 ext 502 http://www.ew3d.com Comprehensive Online

Bind Firewall Rules
OK, so does anybody have a good firewall rule solution for what we're supposed to be doing with bind these days? Obviously port 53 is no longer enough. TIA John Hinton

PHP version dilemma
I am running Centos 5.8; at least uname -rmi gives me centos-release-5-8.el5.centos A CMS package is telling me that I need PHP 5.2x, however yum update says that I am fully up to date. Is there a "safe" way to upgrade PHP to 5.2x? Todd -- Ariste Software Bend, OR 97702 http://www.aristesoftware.com

SquirrelMail Prefs Deleted
FYI. I just had all of the squirrelmail prefs for all the users on one of my servers disappear. I have never had anything like this happen ever before. I'm in the process of finding the needle in the haystack of logs to try to get a handle on this. I'm sending this to the list as a heads up. Seems like Squirrelmail is not doing so good here over the last few months. John Hinton

The delays on CentOS 5.6 are causing EPEL incompatibilities
There are significant components of the upstream 5.6 release which are stuck behind the CentOS 5.6 release process, but are now incorporated in EPEL 5 components. In particular, the "php53" package is now necessary for the "drupal6" EPEL components, due to the long out of date PHP 5.1 in the default upstream vendor's codebase. I see that some of these components are

3rd party repositories
Can anyone comment on the use of 3rd party repos for newer versions of software like php, python and mysql? Two I am aware of are puias and ius. Is one preferable to the other? Can their packages be installed in parallel to and without interfering with base packages?

5.1.6 php to 5.3, a few questions
Alright, looks like I have to do this (centos 5.x install). Some questions.. 1) I imagine I have to uninstall my current version of php...will yum remove want to take a ton of programs with it? Would I have to individually uninstall each package instead? 2) yum down the new version from some repo and then install it. I imagine nothing from the previous setup will be there and I would have

Bind Issues
I'm running bind in a chroot environment. It seems that since the Redhat snafu which wrecked bind (yes, I had caching nameserver running as well but not anymore) I have been having problem with my slave nameservers retrieving updates from the master. Looking at the zone records, some are owned by root, some are owned by named. I'm now confused as to what the ownership should be and

Zimbra vs. Scalix vs. et. al.
Well, I stumbled onto zimbra.... I have a Scallix system built, but still have some rough edges to try to smooth. Like the way it works with sendmail, no dnsbl's will work as sendmail sees all mail as coming from locohost (scalix). Still battling that one which is when I ran across Zimbra. So, this made me start wondering. Are there other exchange server-like products out there? Has

tcptrack
Does anybody have a working version of tcptrack running on Centos 6 x64? The rpmforge rpm installs and runs on the -t eth# command, but if you add a port to it, it bombs with a pcap compile error. It runs fine for me on Centos 5 x64, but seems to have what looks like an old bug reintroduced in 6. -- John Hinton 877-777-1407 ext 502 http://www.ew3d.com Comprehensive Online Solutions

CentOS 6 and Pyzor
Had anybody been successful in getting Pyzor to run on CentOS 6 64bit? I have it running fine on CentOS 6 32 bit, and I 'think' I did identical installs.
