Slightly OT: Centos KVM Host/Guest functions and LVM considerations
Greetings - I will be getting a new server for my company in the next few months and am trying to get a better understanding of some of the basic theoretical approaches to using Centos KVM on a server. I have found plenty of things to read that discuss how to install KVM on the host and how to install a guest and setup the network bridge, and all the other rudimentary tasks. But all of

Simple solution for small network in a school ?
Hi, I have to install a small network in a school in a nearby village. The network will be Linux-only, one server and fifteen desktops. Here's the idea. 1) Authentication should be managed centrally on the server. 2) User home directories should also be on the server. 3) Users should all have disk quotas, something like 1 GB per user. 4) Some shared directories should be read/write for

Make nmbd bind to interfaces only
Hi, I would like to have nmbd only bind to the interfaces specified in the interfaces line of smb.conf, in the same way that smbd does. When researching this I did come across a mailing list thread saying there was no use case, but I think I have one. For many years ClearOS has been providing NT4 style domains and unix-style shares. M$ upset the applecart last year with their 1803 update

User Manager
Using Suse ES9 SP2 with OpenLDAP backend with Samba 3.0.21pre I'm getting the following error. "The stub received bad data Would you like to administer another domain?" then User Manager closes when I select no. User Manager seems to work in limited fashion if Low speed connection is selected. This has worked fine until a few days ago and I have not made any changes. Thanks

Migration to samba4 ad and sync to openldap.
We are currently running samba3 nt4 domain controllers using smb-ldap-tools. We want to convert to samba4 ad so we can run new versions of windows server. I know of: https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Migrating_a_Samba_NT4_Domain_to_Samba_AD_(Classic_Upgrade) But that would break us by moving all ldap to the ad ldap. We have lot's of stuff in ldap. Currently administer using ldap account

Shares stopped working for groups
Hi, I have a ClearOS 7.8 system which is running samba-4.10.4-11.el7_8.x86_64, and it upgraded to this just over a week ago (probably not relevant). A couple of days ago all the group shares failed. I discovered that if I switched them to the built-in group "allusers" the share worked fine. It fails for any user-defined group but it used to work. Samba is running as a PDC and the

Migration to samba4 ad and sync to openldap.
I'm open to alternatives but need to be up and running 24/7 on the linux side. My boss hates windows more than I do and will likely be looking for a new job if I use windows to administer the the linux side. We only use windows if there is no other way do do something. Caching user accounts on a Linux portable
I'm setting up a new Samba-based AD domain. The domain will be used to authenticate access to both Windows and Linux desktops and portables. When a Windows portable is not able to access the AD servers (e.g. you are using a portable outside of the office) you can still happily logon using cached credentials (as long as the user logged on the pc at least once before). Is there a way to get

Lock accounts with SAMBA
Hi, I'm a busy sysadmin locking and unlocking user accounts. I'd like to be able to do it from my linux -kerberos enabled samba workstation. I can easily use net commands to see if a user's account is locked in the ADS. How do I actually lock it from within samba. I've written a user management system at the school that does lots of things, I'd like it to be able to do

ApacheDS vs OpenLDAP
Hi all, Wondering if any of you have thoughts/experiences with ApacheDS? We've all had trials and tribulations regarding OpenLDAP and while its basically working pretty well in a master/slave relationship, ApacheDS claims more robust replication, etc... Granted I am working with the version bundled with CentOS, I do understand that the latest OpenLDAP is wayyyyyyy betterrrr :) - Aurf

ldap sub groups and Samba
Hi, I have a RHEL 5.6 server with samba3x-3.5.4-0.70 instaled, it acts as a PDC, it has OpenLDAP in the same server. Everything works fine, so far, the windows xp and windows 7 machines are inside the domain, and users from the ldap can log from their machines. The thing is that i am trying to create groups, so some users can administrate others users, but not all the users. I know that samba

samba server dependents
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hello, I'm trying to build a solid samba(smb) network. I realize I will have to learn how to administer and connect other network software. I would like to lean toward building an AD type samba environment. So far the network software I believe I need to make this happen is: DNS(I want to use bind9), Kerberos(I want to use MIT), LDAP(openLDAP

CentOS 7 grub.cfg missing on new install
Greetings - The short story is that got my new install completed with the partitioning I wanted and using software raid, but after a reboot I ended up with a grub prompt, and do not appear to have a grub.cfg file. So here is a little history of how I got here, because I know in order for anyone to help me they would subsequently ask for this information. So this post is a little long, but

Resizing est4 filesystem while mounted
Greetings - I had a logical volume that was running out of space on a virtual machine. I successfully expanded the LV using lvextend, and lvdisplay shows that it has been expanded. Then I went to expand the filesystem to fill the new space (# resize2fs -p /dev/vde1) and I get the results that the filesystem is already xx blocks long, nothing to do. If I do a # df -h, I can see that the
