software raid1 syncing
hello all,
I have a setup that is raid 1 and put the mirrored drive back in and now it is still showing as degraded saying: raid1: raid set md6 active with 1 out of 2 mirrors with this message on all the raids.i know i am wrong by saying this but i thought putting in the driving and rebooting would start the re syncing itself. what do i have to do to add this back in, i am so confused with this

OT: Rsync question
Hello All,
I have an off topic question about rsync and was
wondering if i can get some kind person help with it.
I have two servers with each server have three same
directories on them /dir1/ /dir2/ /dir3/ . How would i
achieve this by using rsync?
I have tried rsync -avrt --delete server_ip:/dir1/
/dir2/ /dir3/ /dir1/ /dir2/ /dir3/
this does not do anything except give errors.

lvremove killed
hi,
My volume group is vg. Inside that i have around 10 lvm partitions
(each of 100GB).
When I try to remove partitions using
lvremove /dev/vg/lvm1
It acts like the machine freezes and after a long time the lvremove
process gets killed saying "Killed"
Whats wrong here.
I don't see anything interesting in /var/log/message
Thanks
Paras.

can not lvcreate after lvm snapshot and "xm mem-set" and lvremove
I am not sure if it''s a xen bug or lvm bug, or just my bad hardware,
but here''s how to reproduce:
/dev/vg0/centos1 is lvm block used by a domainU, it''s 8G in size.
#lvcreate -L8192M -s -n snap1 vg0
#mount /dev/vg0/snap1 /mnt
do some copying files here
#umount /mnt
#lvremove /dev/vg0/snap1
not removed! it says can''t allocated memory
#xm mem-set 0 512
#lvremove

SOS: Production VM not starting!
I am using a VM with CentOS 5.8 x86_64 under KVM. I only have console
access to the VM through a virtual console (web based).
Tonight, after a routine "yum update", I did a "shutdown -r now" due to
kernel update and the VM won't start. See console screenshot vm1.png:

There is an error (which I haven't seen before):

Detecting empty office doc containing virus macro
We are receiving LOTS of emails that contain empty XLS or DOC documents with
embedded virus macros. These are getting past SPAMASSASSIN, Clamav and
Kaspersky.
I'm trying to write a filter for EXIM to block these emails but I need to know
a good, quick, command-line to detect an empty doc with a macro.
Is there anything available that I can use??
I have managed to write a PERL script to

Double posting
I do not know if i am seeing things, but it seems
there has been a lot of double posting lately. It
seems it has been only a short while since it started.
i thought it might only been some people, though i am
seeing an increasing amounts of this lately. Is there
something going on with the list or is it a snafu that
i have noticed something.

Problem with Samba on CentOS 5.3
Hi there --
I am having an issue with the Samba package, release 3.033375, that came bundled
with the
CentOS 5.3 distribution. It seems that even though I created the smbpasswd file,
located at
the /etc/samba directory, I am unable to modify the password of the users listed
in it.
I can run the /usr/bin/smbpasswd -a <username> command as root, and even though
there
are no errors, a

I did try that, but had difficulties in compiling it from source-- it's not in the yum repositories (either CentOS or Dag Wieers).

install woes
I'm really at a loss.
I had 5.11 running on this machine, from this physical boot disk, until I
stepped on /bin the other day.
I've tried installing Centos 5.10 and 5.11 to this Seagate 1TB drive. Both
installs run perfectly, but when I try to reboot, grub says
Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0xee
googling this indicates that the disk has a GUID partition table. This must have

redhat vs centos
I have been reading the threads on here with great ernest about redhat
making a move to throw off centos compilations.
I read some stories about microsoft wanting to work closer with centos
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/05/17/microsoft_and_centos/
I have to update to centos 6 due to some needs of clients who need newer
mysql and php (and installing them on centos5
was too hard for me).

filesystem mounting fails at boot
_netdev
The filesystem resides on a device that requires network
access (used to prevent the system from attempting to mount these
filesystems until the network has been enabled on the system).
This device is not a network device (this a SAN not a NAS). To the OS it
looks like a normal SCSI attached device, it's /dev/sdb. In the blade
there is a HBA (Qlogic) card, and it's

You mean reinstall? As upgrading between major releases are not supported
in any way on centos / rhel and clones..
