mkswap, lvm and bootbits sectors
Hello,
I am confused by a warning from mkswap :
When making a swap on a LVM volume, I see the following warning :
mkswap: /dev/vg_SDB1/swap_test6_64: warning: don't erase bootbits
sectors on whole disk. Use -f to force.
Setting up swapspace version 1, size = 1048572 KiB
Is it safe to use mkswap -f in this case ?
(If that matters, the swap is intended for a virtual machine, and

Accidentally issued "mkswap" on ext3 fs -- recovery possible?
Hi,
I accidentally issued "mkswap" on a used ext3 fs partition (~30G) :-/
I have analyzed the behaviour of mkswap using two test files and it
appears to only change "some" bytes:

NFS still serving old directory after rename
Howdy,
I have renamed a directory on NFS ver 3 server and then created a new
directory again with the same name.
# mv dir dir-hosed
# mkdir dir
The directory is auto-mounted on client side. I had unmounted
directories on client side before making above changes. Now when I try
to mount back 'dir', I still see old files and not new empty dir. Am I
missing something here in the NFS config?

figuring out LogVol details for mount
Hi,
I need to mount a LVM in rescue mode to create a new initrd image. I
am not sure how do I fond out which LogVol is to be mounted. How do I
find it out? In most of the configs I have used LogVol00 with ext3
filesystem which contains OS install. This particular system is not
installed by me and I am not sure how do I find it out. I did try 'lvm
lvs' command, but probably that's not

logical volume - device present without table
I am trying to mount a logical volume for creating new initrd image.
The lvs command is showing a logical volume with 'd' attribute -
device present without tables. It's getting listed under /dev/mapper
but not under /dev/VolGroup00. Any help on what might be wrong here?

xargs with max each line / argument
How do I pass xargs input one line at a time to subsequent command?
For example I want to install rubygems by reading a text file as shown
below, however the arguments are getting passed all at once to the
'gem install' command. I hace tried -L (max-lines) and -n (max args)
options, but it didn't work. What's missing here?? Any help?

[PATCH] resize: handle empty UUIDs for swap partitions (RHBZ#1482737)
Avoid passing an empty UUID string to mkswap, which mkswap does not
accept (correctly) as new UUID.
In addition, print a warning when the UUID of a swap partition changed,
since it may require manual fixups in the guest.

syconf(_SC_PAGESIZE) versus getpagesize()
hello karel,
thanks a lot for the klibc portability merges.
current HEAD klibc failure:
mkswap.c: In function ?init_signature_page?:
mkswap.c:148: error: ?_SC_PAGESIZE? undeclared (first use in this function)
although POSIX encourages sysconf() could util-linux use getpagesize() ?

[XEN] using shmfs for swapspace
hi,
am starting to play with XEN - the virtualisation project
(http://xen.sf.net).
i''ll give some background first of all and then the question - at the
bottom - will make sense [when posting to lkml i often get questions
asked that are answered by the background material i also provide...
*sigh*]
each virtual machine requires (typically) its own physical ram (a chunk

copy old CF image to new CF device
I am using an 8G CF card. (I was using dd to duplicate the card with
different size cards I was advised not to).
So I wrote the script below which basically:
1) runs fdisk to setup the device
2) makes the ext3 file system and the swap
3) mounts my old image "/" filesystem and the new partition
4) tar and untar the directories
5) run grub on it
6) set label for "/"

swap labeling annoyance
I just upgraded a blade server via rsync from another server. Rebuilt the
initrd. It boots fine... except that it won't turn on the swap partition.
Several times, I've made sure swap was off, then mkswap -L SWAP-sda3
/dev/sda3, but when I do swapon -L SWAP-sda3, it complains it can't find
the device for the label.
The only thing I find while googling, other than redoing what I've

/dev/sdb3 like "SWAP-sdb3"?
what I want is put on /etc/fstab as entry like:
LABEL=SWAP-sdb2 swap swap
defaults 0 0
LABEL=SWAP-sdb3 swap swap
defaults 0 0

why i can not put my swap files in /dev?
I tried to create some swap files in /dev directory for my desktop.
the dd and mkswap were ok. but when I try to swapon it, i get this:
# swapon /dev/myswap
swapon: /dev/myswap: Invalid argument
but when I mv the file to some other directory like /mnt or /, the
swapon works.

Mounting swap fails in domU (badiane)
Has anyone experienced a swap failing to be mounted in domU''s?
I created a LVM swap space, ran mkswap and made it available on the same
line as the root partition (also on LVM) in each of the domU''s config file.
But it fails to be mounted and I''m running without swap space. That
wouldn''t be too much of a problem if I had a lot of mem to play with but

debian+xen: System fails to mount swap, mydql not starting
I have resolved my mysql problem it had to do with an
improperly configured host file.
My most pressing problem is why mounting swap fails in
all my domU''s.
My disks are LVM based.
/dev/xen/www_swap for example it the (duh!) swap space
for the www domain and exported from the xen file as
disk = [ ''phy:xen/www,sda1,w'' ,
''phy:xen/www_swap,sda2,w'' ]
