CentOS and Dell MD3200i / MD3220i iSCSI w/ multipath
We've been wrestling with this for ... rather longer than I'd care to admit.
Host / initiator systems are a number of real and virtualized CentOS 5.5
boxes. Storage arrays / targets are Dell MD3220i storage arrays.
CentOS is not a Dell-supported configuration, and we've had little helpful
advice from Dell. There's been some amount of FUD in that Dell don't seem
to know what

Dell PERC H800 commandline RAID monitoring tools
We're looking for tools to be used in monitoring the PERC H800 arrays on
a set of database servers running CentOS 5.5.
We've installed most of the OMSA (Dell monitoring) suite.
Our current alerting is happening through SNMP, though it's a bit hit or
miss (we apparently missed a couple of earlier predictive failure alerts
on one drive).
OMSA conflicts with mega-cli, though we may

Remote-logging nginx? (or other non-syslog-enabled stuff)
I'm looking for suggestions as to a good general method of
remote-logging services such as nginx or anything else which doesn't
support syslog natively.
I'm aware that there's an nginx patch, and we're evaluating this. It
may be the way we fly.
However there are other tools which may not have a patch for which
remote logging would be useful. If there's a general soution

Run commands automatically when bringing up/down network interfaces?
I'm looking for a capability similar to Debian/Ubuntu's pre/post up/down
network commands capability.
The problem: we've got a colo in which hosts talk directly to the hosting
provider's router (through a bridging firewall) and hence our hosts MAC
addresses are cached by the router.
We should be able to solve this by pinging the router directly when bringing
up the interface,

3TB External USB Drive isn't recognized
We have a 3TB external USB drive that I am trying to attach to some CentOS5
servers. I have tried an older Dell PE1950 and a newer R310 but neither one
seems to be able to read the drive. It works no problem on windows
servers/workstations and I was able to format with NTFS.
I know there are different methods for formatting large disks but this one
doesn't even seem to show up as a /dev/

Server hangs on CentOS 5.5
Hi --
I'm running a server which is usually stable, but every
once in a while it hangs. The server is used as a file
store using NFS and to run VMware machines.
I don't see anything in /var/log/messages or elsewhere
to indicate any problem or offer any clue why the system
was hung.
Any suggestions where I might look for a clue?

Experimental psycho-acoustic model
Happy new year all!
I have had a few issues with this sort of stuff- you could adjust NB_ENC_STACK
or SB_ENC_STACK (which ever you may be fiddling with) and see if the problem
goes away- could be the allocation for the vorbis psy tables takes up more
space than
the current stack size allows (not sure how allocated? Could be your
settings for
supporting alloca/etc. are set different than jm,

Safe/sane tempfile creation?
I'm used to Debian-based distros which have a tempfile(1) utility for
safely and sanely creating temporary files.
There isn't a comperable utility for RHEL/CentOS systems.
I've been exercising Google-fu looking for a good robust tempfile
generation idiom, but haven't turned one up yet.
Hence this appeal to the lazyweb.

what is this averaging function called ?, has R a built in function for it ?
I know little of statistics and have created this function out of intuition.
But since this algorithm is so basic I wonder what is the proper name of
this function and is it build in R.
here is some code in PHP to illustrate what the function is doing, it uses
some function I created but the meaning is obvious:
#get csv file and interchange rows with columns to get two arrays

OT: dmidecode data - what is maximum RAM capacity of this box?
In Timo's thread about RAM today, I noticed dmidecode and I got the
data for my Dell Dimension 2400 (Celeron CPU) box, which is below. I
won this box in a raffle, during February 2005. After I got the box, I
got conflicting information, from Crucial.com and from Dell Latin
America, regarding the maximum RAM configuration. To be conservative,
I bought two 256 MB DIMMS from Crucial.com, early
