Best practices for the maximal length of user names
Hello,
are there any best practices for the length of user names?
I tend to limit them to 8 characters and to follow the pattern 'first
letter of the first name'+'first 7 letters of the last name' (e.g.
mbaudier).
But people are sometimes frustrated with having their last name
truncated and I wonder if limiting the user name to 8 characters is
not a kind of superstition coming

CentOS 5 on a Thinkpad T60 laptop
Hello,
I'm considering buying a second-hand Thinkpad T60 (with 2 GB RAM), as
a secondary laptop in order to run CentOS 5 on the field.
My main focus is therefore to have something robust, reliable and
above all well compatible with CentOS.
Hibernate / suspend feature are important to me, because that's the
main issue I have with CentOS on other laptops.
I have found the following

Firefox slower on GMail since update to CentOS 5.5
Hello,
since I upgraded from CentOS x86_64 5.4 to 5.5, I noticed that Firefox
has become significantly slower on GMail (or Google Apps Mail).
The page becomes slow to scroll as soon as there are more than a few
mails in a conversation (like in a typical CentOS mailing list
thread).
Did anyone else notice that as well?
(I guess that I'm not the only GMail user around)
Could I have missed

Internet access not working on CentOS but on Windows when travelling
Hello,
I'm currently travelling (in south-eastern Europe) with a netbook
(Samsung NC 10) running CentOS 5.4 i386.
I frequently try to access internet from bars or hotels (mostly via wireless).
Although it works pretty often, it happens quite regularly that in
some hotels I cannot access internet from CentOS while it is possible
from Windows.
This is the case in the hotel where I am currently

Best practices for LVM and virtualization
Hello,
I'm currently setting up a virtualization infrastructure based on
CentOS 5.4 x86_64 and KVM.
I want to use LVM because of its flexibility, especially the ability
to add more disk space to a guest if needed.
We are considering using an hardware RAID1 with BBU as the lowest layer.
My question is: where is it recommended to put the LVM?
1. On the host only
In that case, the guests

repo with eclipse/subclipse?
Is there a 3rd party repo with working eclipse-platform/subclipse
versions? Preferably something compatible with an up to date subversion?
I'm currently getting:
Error: Missing Dependency: libneon.so.25 is needed by package
subversion-1.6.5-0.1.el5.rf.i386 (rpmforge)
when I try with rpmforge enabled.

Umlaute and Sharing with both SAMBA and Helios Ethershare.
Hi all
I have samba 1.9.18 and 2.0.2 shares which are also shared to the
macintosh world with Helios ethershare running under Solaris 2.5.1 and
2.6. I can create files and directories with the German special
characters "umlaute" and "sz" with either client. My problem is that the
macintoshes can't access directories created from the PCs whose name
contains special

Eclipse with RDT
Has anyone used Eclipse with RDT
(http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/show/RubyDevelopmentTools)? I have
never used Eclipse. Would it be worth my time to setup Eclipse with RDT
to create my first rails project?

CentOS 6 : Tip for significantly increasing battery life / reducing power consumption (Thinkpad X220 Tablet)
Hello,
I was not happy with the power consumption of CentOS 6 x86_64 on a new
Lenovo Thinkpad x220 Tablet and I worked on reducing it. I just wanted
to share with the list one of the changes which gave me the most
significant improvement.
As per http://www.williambrownstreet.net/blog/?p=387, add the
following kernel arguments to the GRUB boot configuration:

Are SSD disks worth the cost for server usage?
Hi,
we want to upgrade our infrastructure and are considering renting two
different types of server by a provider:
- A: one is with 80 GB SSD (and 12 GB memory)
http://www.ovh.co.uk/products/eg_ssd.xml
- B: the other with 750 GB SATA2 (and 8 GB memory).
http://www.ovh.co.uk/products/eg_best_of.xml
The target infrastructure will host:
- a few public web sites (PHP / MySQL)
- a development

Switch...err Capistrano hangs
I''m having a little bit of difficulty deploying my app. I''ve run the
setup and it works with Cap, but when I try to deploy it hangs at
"querying latest revision". I can access my svn locally (I''m on a
windows xp sp2 machine) using SubClipse plugin, but not through the
command line though (yes, svn client is installed).
I''m pretty sure that

[LLVMdev] Building llvm-2.6 on Eclipse CDT
Hello Gang,
I am trying to build llvm-2.6 src on Eclipse CDT (Helios) and I was getting
some errors in the unittest folder. Anybody here knows how to build the llvm
source on Eclipse CDT? Please let me know soon.
p.s: I am a newbie to LLVM. I was able to build it on the terminal (on
Ubuntu), but I need to use it on Eclipse (like Java projects).

XDEBUG build bots?
Yeah, they are just triggered by lit check tests. I’ll file some bugs today, though it looks like Quentin may have already filed bugs for some of these.

XDEBUG build bots?
Thanks for noticing this, Geoff.
I just landed r268050 which add a cmake option for this (and unifies XDEBUG
and EXPENSIVE_CHECKS). This might make it easier to setup some build bots.
Thank you,
Filipe

Eclipse and StatET Howto (also added Subversion, Rtools)
I recently got a RFC on Eclipse and StatET setup from a R-help user, so here
it is.
Note: there may be slight errors of omission in my directions as I am making
these notes after I had a successful install. If you have questions post
here.
Setup tested with Eclipse 3.4.0 on XP 32-bit and Eclipse 3.4.2 on Vista
32-bit.
R 2.9.0 alpha.
Installing StatET:

XDEBUG build bots?
Hi All,
Are there any bots that do any testing with clang/llvm built with XDEBUG
(i.e. expensive checking)? I'm seeing 36 lit tests that currently hit
asserts that are checked when XDEBUG is enabled. The checks that I'm
hitting are:
- DominatorTree::verifyDomTree()
- DAGTypeLegalizer::PerformExpensiveChecks()
- SelectionDAG checkForCyclesHelper
Are these known issues or should I file

CentOS, Firefox, and Java Plugin
The latest updates to CentOS 5.5 seem to have broken the Java plugin, and have defeated any and all attempts to get it working again. I'm running CentOS 5.5 (32-bit) and Firefox 3.6.9 (installed from the CentOS repository); I've tried BOTH the openJDK plugin available through the Argeo repositories, and installing Java 1.6.0 directly from Sun/Oracle and creating the plugin soft link in
