PATA Hard Drive woes
Hi All.
Yesterday I was installing Centos 5.5 to my web server, and
it looks like the main hard drive has gone AWOL.
Fedora 12 put the file system into r/o mode.
The drive is an Hitachi, still under warranty.
There are bad sectors on it, and running the Hitachi DFT
tool confirms this. Also I cannot repair the bad sectors.
Would this be caused by a faulty I/O chip, or is it safe to

GRUB woes: GRUB Hard Disk Error
Hello all,
I am attempting to install CentOS 5.5 on a recently donated home server (was
Windows). I've tried installing twice; first, separating /boot, swap, /,
/var, /usr and /home into different partitions, the second time choosing
default layout. Both times have resulted in "GRUB Hard Disk Error" upon
boot.
About the hard disk, it is a Seagate SATA drive. I do not have another

Resilvering - Scrubing whats the different
Hello All
I read this thread Resilver/scrub times? for a few minutes
and I have recognize that I dont know the different between
Resilvering and Scrubing. Shame on me. :-(
I dont find some declarations in the man-pages and I know the command
to start scrubing "zpool scrub tank"
but what is the command to start resilver and what is the different?

Scrubbing only checks used data?
Hi there,
I am currently evaluating OpenSolaris as a replacement for my linux installations. I installed it as a xen domU, so there is a remote chance, that my observations are caused by xen.
First, my understanding of "zpool scrub" is "Ok, go ahead, and rewrite each block of each device of the zpool".
Whereas "resilvering" means "Make

How to interrupt a zpool scrub?
Dear all
Is there a way to stop a running scrub on a zfs pool? Same question applies to a running resilver.
Both render our fileserver unusable due to massive CPU load so we''d like to postpone them.
In the docs it says that resilvering and scrubbing survive a reboot, so I am not even sure if a reboot would stop scrubbing or resilvering.
Any help greatly appreciated!
Cheers, Thomas

# devices in raidz.
for s10u2, documentation recommends 3 to 9 devices in raidz. what is the
basis for this recommendation? i assume it is performance and not failure
resilience, but i am just guessing... [i know, recommendation was intended
for people who know their raid cold, so it needed no further explanation]
thanks... oz

Slow Resilvering Performance
I know this topic has been discussed many times... but what the hell
makes zpool resilvering so slow? I''m running OpenSolaris 2009.06.
I have had a large number of problematic disks due to a bad production
batch, leading me to resilver quite a few times, progressively
replacing each disk as it dies (and now preemptively removing disks.)
My complaint is that resilvering ends up

bad seagate drive?
Hi list,
I''ve got a system with 3 WD and 3 seagate drives. Today I got an email
that zpool status indicated one of the seagate drives as REMOVED.
I''ve tried clearing the error but the pool becomes faulted again. Taken
out the offending drive and plugged into a windows box with seatools
install. Unfortunately seatools finds nothing wrong with the drive.
Windows seems to see

Winbind(?) woes after hard disk full
Hi all.
Yesterday morning, we had a problem with our Samba box (3.0.20b-SUSE),
traced to the root(/) partition becoming full. Upon restart, it was
later reported that users at another office (trusted domain), could not
access our server.
Everything had been running smoothly for over 5 months.
Running 'wbinfo -u/-g' returns a list of users/groups from the local
domain, prefixed with

Asterisk 1.4.0-beta3 spandsp rxfax woes (or me being hard of thinking)
Hi,
I have installed the latest version of asterisk(1.4.0-beta3), and built
app_rxfax/txfax. I'm using spandsp from here,
http://www.soft-switch.org/downloads/snapshots/spandsp/spandsp-20061207.tar.gz
Everything builds ok. I had to manually apply the patch from the site so
configure would spot spandsp libraries. However, when I try dialing my
virtual fax extension (either from a phone or

Mixing SATA & PATA Drives
I suspect it''s probably not a good idea but I was wondering if someone
could clarify the details.
I have 4 250G SATA(150) disks and 1 250G PATA(133) disk. Would it
cause problems if I created a raidz1 pool across all 5 drives?
I know the PATA drive is slower so would it slow the access across the
whole pool or just when accessing that disk?
Thanks for your input.

Smart-UPS staying in OB after power return
Hi list,
UPS is a Smart-UPS 3000 RM (SU3000RM3U, ups.firmware 92.11.D,
ups.mfr.date 12/14/99) with brand-new batteries. NUT is 2.6.5 running
on SL6 (RHEL6 clone) from EPEL packages. 'upsc' output pasted at bottom.
I'm not very familiar with UPSs in general or this model in particular,
and it's doing things I don't expect. I have done my homework, and read

Issue with drive replacement
In the process of replacing a raidz1 of four 500GB drives with four 1.5TB drives on the third one I ran into an interesting issue. The process was to remove the old drive, put the new drive in and let it rebuild.
The problem was the third drive I put in had a hardware fault. That caused both drives (c4t2d0) to show as FAULTED. I couldn''t put a new 1.5TB drive in as a replacement -

using various IDE or SCSI hard drive interfaces with CentOS Linux questions
greetings,
it has been a long time and i do not recall all the specifics
if one loads CentOS Linux on a machine with an PATA IDE or SCSI hard drive
interface then i should be able to interchange that drive on virtually _ANY_
machine with an PATA IDE or SCSI respectively right?? (ignore physical
connector differences on SCSI)
i believe the answer(s) to be yes...
now, what about the newer SATA?

Replacing HDD in x4500
The vendor wanted to come in and replace an HDD in the 2nd X4500, as it
was "constantly busy", and since our x4500 has always died miserably in
the past when a HDD dies, they wanted to replace it before the HDD
actually died.
The usual was done, HDD replaced, resilvering started and ran for about
50 minutes. Then the system hung, same as always, all ZFS related
commands would just
