NTFS is more resilient than ext3? Or is it hardware issue?
Hi guys,
I don't mean to incite debate or something, just want to share
experience and a little curiosity.
Back long time ago, we have an old file MS W2K (NTFS) server where due
no admin was available to manage it, the server would get power off
when the office closed, and auto power on again in the morning. That
thing happened for years and it was fine ^^
Recently, I setup a Centos 5.5 file

CentOS-4.3 Install Fails
I'm using the same CD's that I've used to install CentOS on my other
systems.
After the first failure I had the installation verify the install media just
in case. It passed.
I've tried the default install (used for all previous installs) and the i586
option (after googling). They both fail in the same way.
Here is a transcript of what is output to the screen:

Ext3 Journal corruption on hitachi deskstars
I recently came across an enormous cluster of x86 clone machines running
fedora core 1 (2.4.24) which have typically all intel or amd have VIA IDE
chipsets.
They frequently experience corrupted journals rendering the ext3 partition
in read-only mode. More important than recovering the filesystem, I am
interested in finding the root of the problem.
The common hardware that all of these

was, PATA Hard Drive woes, is "SMART"
Folks,
Thanks a *lot* to those who suggested I try fsck -cc - that took six
hours, and at the end, I was standing there, and it tells me that
there's two back blocks, one was /dead/base.pp, and... (wait for it)
bad blocks, in node 1.
I said yes, fix them, and rebooted, and I don't see complaints.

Symmetra LX 16000
I have a Symmetra LX 16000 UPS with a Network Management Card (Schneider
Electric, I think).?? Can NUT be configured to report from this unit and
shutdown hosts based upon messages from this unit?

Kernel panic, CentOS 7.1503 fully updated, with executing gkrellm.
Just a heads up, since I know gkrellm is in EPEL and not in the main
CentOS repos. However, something fairly fundamental has changed, as
prior to updating, gkrellm worked fine, but now every time I execute
gkrellm the kernel panics.
I'm going to triage on a different machine, as the panic corrupted at
least one system library used by nautilus, but rpm -Va is your friend in
these

Confirming Multi-Processor
I have a test bed server that's pretty old- PIII Dual 550. I've done yum
update kernel-smp and when I run cat/proc/cpuinfo it lists both processors-
is there anything I need to to to confirm that it's fully utilizing both
processors?
I ask this because under the old OS (Fedora Core 2) I always saw an error
message at boot that said something about operating in single-processor mode

using nut to monitor SNMP UPS unit
Hi all,
I've been trying to build NUT (latest release source) on a pretty "standard"
CentOS (RHEL style) linux box, to monitor an APC Symmetra UPS Unit which
powers our server room and broadcasts information via SNMP to appropriate
clients.
I am having some trouble even encouraging NUT to build with snmp support,
which doesn't seem to happen by default.
I am curious if anyone

Stable clock with 2.6 and without Digium hardware.
Anybody sucessfully got stable 1000Hz clock without Digium harware and kernel 2.6?
We need to consult some peoples how to clock asterisk stable with exactly 1000 Hz without much kernel/drives patching/tweaking.
Some test results we made so far:
2.6 with digium card - stable 1000 Hz.
2.6 with ztdummy - uses RTC and the clock is 1024, not 1000.
2.6 with some Realtime kernel patch - provides stable

X instability
Hi all,
How does X server work well on dom0 in general?
I''m experiencing frequently drawn gabages and sometimes crashes
and hangs (100% cpu) of certain X applications.
Usually on my deskstop, gnome-panel, sawfish, krxvt, firefox,
and gkrellm are only present.
gnome-panel (and some applets) and firefox crash sometimes.
Sawfish in addition to the two above draws garbage.
krxvt and

Grub, pata, and sata
I've just filed bug 0004634. Grub won't install onto my pata drive now
that I have a sata drive installed. This is grub 0.97 on CentOS5.5.
Has anyone else encountered this? I'm guessing that I can always
install Fedora on hda, which should give me a working grub, but I was
hoping for something a little less involved.
Thanks,

CentOS v4.5 and Intel 965/G33BY chipsets - PATA support
Greetings CentOS users,
I have run into a hardware issue with the Intel 965 chipset. It appears
that the latest kernel doesn't support the Marvell PATA controller. I can
kickstart the computer, but after the OS is installed the DVD drive can't
be accessed.
There are patches against 2.6.18 for the Marvell PATA controller here:

How to let wine doing a rescan of PATA devices?
I used to use a hot-plugable PATA-CDROM drive on my Computer (Samsung P35 laptop).
To change drive I use a script which at the bottom of its heart uses
Code:
echo "scsi remove-single-device 1 0 0 0" | sudo tee /proc/scsi/scsi
and
Code:
echo "scsi add-single-device 1 0 0 0" | sudo tee /proc/scsi/scsi
commands in oder to let the OS being aware of the changed drive.

CPU usage over estimated?
I have a quad core CPU running Centos5.
When I use top, I see that running processes use 245% instead of 100%.
If I use gkrellm, I just see one core being used 100%.

Also in the log of some programs I see this strange factor:

looking for motherboard / temp / hdd monitor, other than lmsensors
Hi all
What other good temp / motherboard / fan speed / HDD / etc monitor can I
use on CentOS 5.1 (or even 5.2 - still need to upgrade)? I know
lmsensors works ok'ish, but it doesn't pickup my Gigabyte motherboard
properly.

getGraphicsEvent on X11 and event queuing
Hi R-Devel,
I've been working on an oscilloscope project using an Arduino
microcontroller board. I found that it's quite easy to get realtime
updates, e.g. 30+ frames per second, if I read data from the board in
a little Rcpp library. I have to use dev.hold() and dev.flush() to
keep the plot from flickering, which restricts me to the "cairo" X11
device.
I'd like to be able

Mixing SATA & PATA Drives
I suspect it''s probably not a good idea but I was wondering if someone
could clarify the details.
I have 4 250G SATA(150) disks and 1 250G PATA(133) disk. Would it
cause problems if I created a raidz1 pool across all 5 drives?
I know the PATA drive is slower so would it slow the access across the
whole pool or just when accessing that disk?
Thanks for your input.

Installing CentOS on RAID PATA not SATA - A8V
I'm trying to install CentOS 4 on an A8V on the
PATA/Raid drives on the Promise controller. The
Promise controller is recognized (sata_promise), but
the PATA drives are not recognized. Base on this
thread
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=147303
it seems that there is a patch which was merged in
2.6.11 to get pata working.
Any ideas how to proceed?
Thanks in advance
