Is every CentOS release supported for 7 years?
Hi, I've read some posts in the forums which seems to indicate that not every CentOS version is well supported. Is it possible to install CentOS 5.5 on a server and only apply security updates for 7 years? Or is the preferred way to upgrade to each minor version? Thanks in advance! Relevant forum quotes: Probably not relevant to the problem; however, the current release is 5.4 - 5.3 is

Contos3->5 upgrade, smbmount is gone?
I solemnly puke upon people who break things and call it progress. Get ye to Redmond. I upgraded Centos3.8 to Centos5.4; smbmount is gone. Mounting a WinXP share requires a new instantiation of the old command smbmount \\\\hostname\\path\\to\\share /local/mount/point -o ip=123.12.34.234,username=hostname\\my_userid,password=whatever which should now be mount -t cifs <somebody please

Antwort: MegaRAID SAS 9280-24i4e -- Centos support.
Timo, Its interesting, I am presently attending a conference in NYC and in one of the tables I saw the redhat vendor. My first question to them was " What do you think about centos", they reply "You are using a distribution without support and that is prompt to failure..." I don't think this is an accurate statement is it? Anyway to make the story short, they keep telling

1 Gbit/s Ethernet NIC under CentOS
Hello listmates, As some of you may know we have been having a really bad problem with Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8169 cards. See here for details: http://forum.nginx.org/read.php?24,140124,140224 So now my question is, what PCI 1 Gbit/s Ethernet adapters should I use under CentOS? If you have had a consistent positive experience with any particular chipset/brand please speak up.

nat and wandering phones
Hi all I'm looking for a solution to this problem. *box--------internet-----------nat-----------softphone We have potential customers who will be travelling the world with laptops/pda's. They need to be able to connect to the asterisk box via ip wherever they are and will have no control over nat whatsoever. I have read that STUN offers this service, but cannot picture in my mind how

powerdown problem on XEN
Hi guys, I have a problem with powering down my system under the XEN hypervisor. System details are as follows: gentoo linux, X86_64 XEN version 4.2.2 linux hardened kernel 3.9.5 as dom0 Xeon E3 1260L processor (vt-d capable) 32GB ECC RAM which has been thoroughly tested - so should be o.k. when I issue "shutdown -h now" from dom0 the system usually reboots instead of turning off

ext3 filesystem corruption
Hi, I've been experiencing intermittent filesystem corruption on a Compaq Armada M700 laptop w/ IBM Travelstar 30GB drives (both the 40GN and 30GN models). This happens mostly under RH 7.2, w/ ext3 filesystems, but I think it's also happened under win98. All seems fine until power-down, power-up, and boot, where the corruption is discovered. Searching these archives, I found that there

Minimal installation How-to?
Hi all I would like to install the minimal level of Centos, with yum & selinux on my servers during the basic install from CD with Anaconda and then use yum to install whatever application is major on that server, so that yum installs its dependencies only, thus keeping to the target of installing only what is needed on a server. Please advise pros/cons of this approach and how to do it. I

drawing segments through points with pch=1
Please excuse me for asking such basic questions: Here is my code > y=c(1.21,0.51,0.14,1.62,-0.8,0.72,-1.71,0.84,0.02,-0.12) > ybar=mean(y) > ll=length(y); > ybarv=rep(ybar,ll) > x=1:ll > plot(x,ybarv,pch=1) > segments(x[1],ybar,x[ll],ybar) What I get is a collection of small circles, with a segment "on top" of the circles, which is almost what I want. But I

Wandering usr values in par(no.readonly=TRUW) (PR#2283)
--==_Exmh_1801894504P Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Dear R folks, Initially I had a plotting routine using logarithmic y-axes that failed after repeated calls if I tried to restore the graphical parameters (which I wanted to do because I used `layout' within the routine. I tried to isolate the problem and found out that the following code with logarithmic axis is sufficient for

upgrade problem
Currently we have RH7.3 with compiler gcc 2.96.x My mission, should I choose to accept it, involves moving our embedded application to CentOS 4.1 with gcc 3.x Problem is that about 1/2 million lines of code that gcc 2.96 accepts gives fatal fits to the gcc 3.x compiler from CentOS 4.1 I don't know how many fatal fits, as some disguise others etc. "Can't find register to

SELinux threads, cynicism, one-upmanship, etc.
After reading through the various SELinux threads, I really became quite perturbed. I mean, really quite perturbed. As an IT Director (and the entire IT department, currently), if I were hiring a sysadmin I know for a fact that someone whose first response to a question on why something doesn't work is 'turn it off' would not get a job here. Neither would a sysadmin with as much

why was LILO removed from centOS 4.2?
I can't choose LILO as boot loader anymore in the install process? And what is the advantages in GRUP vs. LILO that are so great that LILO has been deleted all together? One big disadvantages when forced to use GRUB is that it is a hassle to make the disks in a RAID1 bootable. https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2005-March/msg05935.html and RAID1 seems pretty useless when it is the

Sweave: printing an underscore in the output from an R command
I am working with Sweave and would like to print out into my latex document the result of the R command version$platform So what I first tried in my .Rnw document was \Sexpr{print(version$platform)}. However, the output from this command is the string "x86_64-apple-darwin10.8.0" (without the quotes). This contains an underscore, which is a special character in tex and so I get an error

powercom UPS shoutdown discussion
Thank you for your response. The point is that I have configured my system to shut down at the event "upsc Inform@localhost ups.status"!="OL", not at "LB". So there will be no /etc/killpower file created. At an ups.status != "OL" event, the following script named "notifyme" is run: echo `date` >> /root/upsLog echo " No power, shutting
