hda: no DRQ after issuing WRITE
I upgraded my Centos 4.7 server last night. Switched from a cheaper 50$ asus motherboard to a Supermicro motherboard. I also, using dd, copied entire 500g SATA seagate drive to new 500g SATA seagate drive so as to have two copies in case something went wrong. Anyway, now I keep getting this error: Nov 21 06:08:33 server kernel: hda: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy } Nov 21 06:08:33 server

Showing sda or hda disk as xvhda on Xen Center5.6 FP1
Hi, I am using Xen Center5.6 FP1 since last 8 months and it was working fine since last few weeks, when i observed that suddenly all new Xen VMs started showing me sda or hda disks as xvhd. This is observed when i try to create any new Xen VM on my XenCenter5.6FP1. All my earlier Xen VMs are still showing hda or sda but when i try to upgrade the respective VMs say from SLES11GA to SLES11 SP1, it

correct way to migrate old data on hda to new sda
I am migrating off of a 40GIG hda to a new 160GIG sda disk. I plan on installing 4.2 from scratch. But after that what is the correct way do transfer all the data from hda (home partition really) to the new sda home partition? I presume there is just a couple files in /etc to restore also. Like hosts, passwd. Anything else? Other suggestions welcome also. this is my first time migrating to a

Any experiences with newer WD Red drives?
Might be slightly OT as it isn't necessarily a CentOS related issue. I've been using WD Reds as mdraid components which worked pretty well for non-IOPS intensive workloads. However, the latest C7 server I built, ran into problems with them on on a Intel C236 board (SuperMicro X11SSH) with tons of "ata bus error write fpdma queued". Googling on it threw up old suggestions to

boot with more scsi card
hi, we've got a server with a 8 port 3ware card and 2 ide system disks. now we'd like to replace the ide disks with scsi disks or sata disks (these also recognized as scsi in the kernel). but we can't boot from it. the problem are twofold. first in the normal case the first scsi host scsi0 id the 3ware card, but grub only see the first 8 disk so if the system disk are sdi and sdj the

SMART for SATA devices ?
I noticed that the changelog for the new kernel 2.6.9-34 on the redhat enterprise watchlist states on of the fixes as; 145061 - SMART support in SATA driver (P1) Does this mean that with that kernel we should be able to interrogate SATA drives now ? Cheers, Bards.

Buggy SATA detection w/CentOS5 + Intel H6300ESB?
I've been handed a Supermicro system that is using the Intel? H6300ESB Serial ATA Controller (Supermicro P4SCI motherboard). When I install CentOS5, everything seems to work OK, but it has absolutely horrid disk performance. Upon further inspection, it seems that the SATA disks are being treated as legacy IDE devices using PIO. Gah.... Has anyone else had this problem? I recall having

Newbie DomU problem
Suse 10.1 AMD64 Xen3 New to Xen. The dom0 is up and running. I am trying to get my first domU working. My approach is to use precompiled images from jailtime.org. After some manual tinkering with the .cfg file the domU proceeds to boot but stalls with the following error. I cannot get past this - any ideas ? Brian Using config file "/etc/xen/vm/vm1". Started domain vm1 Bootdata ok

DMA mode
Hi folks, I have an HP Proliant 140DL G2 server with what appears to be an IDE drive in non-DMA mode. Performance on the server is extremely bad when large amounts of disk activity is taking place. I think the problem is that my drive is not in DMA mode: # hdparm /dev/hda /dev/hda: multcount = 16 (on) IO_support = 0 (default 16-bit) unmaskirq = 0 (off) using_dma = 0 (off)

how can I tell what's on the MBR of /dev/sda?
Subject says it. I would like to find out if I have anything written on the MBR of a disk in my system /dev/sda, or any other device. If there is something there, is it readable, or recognizable to humans? thanks, -chuck

using /dev/hda system to build initrd for /dev/sda system
I think I have booting issues for my custom kernel on centos 4. the sda system cannot find the disk. I used a qemu image to build a centos 4 MATH_EMULATION kernel. This system has /dev/hda. The system I am putting the vmlinuz and initrd files on is a /dev/sda system. I dont think the initrd image is getting built correctly. Does this make sense? What might I look at changing to ensure my
