Text file manipulation in CentOS?
Dear All
>From my previous posts , I learned from you to make use of 'sort' , 'grep' ,
and 'grep -v' to manipulate text files . At now, I have generated a large
text file from my autoexpect script. To be more specific, I need to find how
many distinct records are there in say column#1? How can I filter out the
distinct records with number of occurances less than a

Minor problem with CUPS printing.
I've got a Red hat 8.0 machine running the latest "up2date" version of Samba
(2.2.7 with Red Hat's patches) acting as a print server using CUPS.
The printing of documents is fine for the most part. But I have noticed one
thing that is really nothing more than an annoyance and was wondering if
anyone else has seen the problem and possibly a cure.
I have all Windows 2000 Pro

latest 4.2 to 4.3 upgrade and distribution by CentOS team
greetings!
it appeared to me that previous upgrades were strained by sheer amount and
size of the update as well as the eagerness of the CentOS userbase to get
upgraded...
this last one, well... it went so smooth that i believe many may have missed
it happening so to speak :-)
initially having been a large Galacticom aka Worldgroup BBS operator
(remember those?) and then an ISP for going on 2

yum vs up2date
Which is better? Why?
I know yum is the official update mechanism here and in Fedora Core, but
that doesn't make yum better than up2date any more than Windows NT was
better than OS/2.
Let's try to keep the discussion objective:-)
I'm asking, hoping for some insights into why RH might (apparently) be
moving to yum in preference to up2date (yum is now used within Anaconda).

CentOS 3.9's up2date missing sources???
CentOS3.9 Users:
After applying all Updates to Upgrade from CentOS 3.8 CentOS 3.9 I find
up2date no longer works "correctly" (or shall I say NOT as before)...
Missing is the "sources" File!!! Is this how V 4.5.5-7 is supposed to be
or is the "sources" File omission an "error"???

up2date
I have found a few issues with puppet and the up2date provider (version
0.22.4) that I''d like to run by those who use up2date (to see if others
are experiencing the same issues).
1. Puppet doesn''t seem to find the latest updates of packages that are
already installed. In looking at
"/usr/lib/site_ruby/1.8/puppet/provider/package/up2date.rb", I found
that

Minor annoyances: Samba 3.0.2/Win2k and WinXP
I have three users that are having trouble with my Samba network. This
trouble is composed of two (possibly distinct) issues. My network is
controlled by a Red Hat ES 3 server running Samba 3.0.2 with an LDAP
backend.
Issue 1: Laptop users, with "Offline Files" that are made of their "My
Documents" directories. These directories are stored on the Samba server

i386 and x86_64 depsolver issue with Seamonkey
CentOS uses the yum dependency solver for doing updates and not the RHN
(normal) up2date mechanism. That is functionality built into up2date.
Due to this difference, there is a problem with the Seamonkey upgrade to
replace Mozilla using up2date on CentOS-4, because it does not see
Seamonkey as obsoleting Mozilla. (This is a problem with the yum
depsolver that is included in up2date).

Using up2date to download channels on rhn
Hi all,
i have a problem with centos's up2date tool. I have setup a central
update server with yam (http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/yam/) under

CPU Usage when idle
Hello guys,
Did anyone noticed how green CentOS 6 is compared to the previous
release? I've been running a couple of "CentOS 6" VMs (on our vSphere
environment) for the last couple of weeks and noticed a BIG difference
when it comes to CPU usage when the VM is completely idle. I would
like to share what I've seen in our environment:

Alert icon for yum
Hi all. I have a simple question: CentOS relies mostly on "yum" to
keep systems up to date, although I understand that like on RHEL,
"up2date" is also available. On my system I've run both KDE and GNOME
as Graphical Desktops under X (though I presently run GNOME), and I've
noticed that there is an applet called "CentOS Network Alert Icon" (from

RHN Up2date Cruft: can I dump it?
Got part 1 - xx of back up working, so figured it's a good time to look
for stuff to jettison... casually of course. Like paperwork,
documentation, ... it's low on the priority list with GB so cheap these
days.
Anyway, 42M in /var/spool/up2date. Headers and such. I use only yum
after my first month or so of CentOS. Can I dump that and similar non-
config stuff?
Or does it have some
