storage servers crashing, hair being pulled out!
I have a trio of servers that like to reboot during high disk / network IO operations. They don't appear to panic, as I have kernel.panic = 0 in sysctl.conf. The syslog just shows normal messages, like samba complaining about browse master and then just syslogd starting up. The machines seem to crash when I'm not near the console, usually when I'm trying to pull data off them to

Dovecot Oy merger with Open-Xchange AG
Hi all, Today I can finally announce that Dovecot Oy company has merged with Open-Xchange AG. This helps us to get more Dovecot developers, support people and so on. Most importantly, eventually it should allow me to get back to doing what I like the most: Designing new and interesting stuff for Dovecot and perfecting the old stuff :) OX is a great match to Dovecot going forward. virtual gigabit
Is there anyway to get gigabit networking for a fully virtualized guest? I''ve tried searching for this one, but all I get are results about gigabit networking for the host / dom0, nothing for domU. Copyright versus Licenses
My company recently started using a R library from RCRAN that is licensed under the LGPL Version 2 or greater per the DESCRIPTION file, but contains no copy of the LGPL notice, or any copyright notice. I've grown accustomed to paying attention to copyright and licensing as a Debian package maintainer, and sent the author of the package an email expressing my concern. The author believed that

Dovecot Oy merger with Open-Xchange AG
To Timo and the Dovecot guys - congratulations! I'm sure this merger with OpenXchange is going to provide you with a lot of resources and opportunities. As a longtime user of dovecot, I do have a few concerns. I wonder if you can answer some questions for me. You say that OpenXchange really likes open source and shares your plans for the future. Is this a commitment that future versions

CentOS on Compaq Proliant Rackmount Servers
Greetings, Can anyone relate experience(s) installing CentOS on Compaq rack mount servers units please? Easy no problem, easy some issues, or ghastly do not do it under any circumstances... ;) Basically, I'm looking at some used/refurb dual PIII units and will run RAID on Compaq built in SCSI or is it easy to pop in some 3ware SATA in them? Let me know in terms of CentOS 3 and/or 4 please.

Automate a data load and merge
Hi R list, I would like to automate, or speed up the process from which I take several separate datasets, stored in .csv formate, import and merge them by a common variable. So far I have greatly sped up the loading process but cannot think of a way to automate the merger of all datasets into a common data.frame. My apologies if this has been covered, any R search suggestions are

again, nic driver order
I have two servers with identical hardware ... TYAN i3210w system boards with dual intel gigabit interfaces, and a PCI intel gigabit nic. I'm running Centos 5.4, x86_64, 2.6.18-164.6.1.el5 Every other time I reboot, the nics initialize in a different order. anaconda had setup /etc/modprobe.conf with alias lines for the cards: alias eth0 e1000 alias eth1 e1000e alias eth2 e1000e However,

[OT/HW] hardware raid -- comment/experience with 3Ware
Greetings, I am looking for a hardware raid card that supports up to 4 SATA II hard disks with hot swap (compatible raid cage) I have short listed two LSI/3Ware cards: 1. 9750-4i 2. 9650SE-4LPML Both appear to be well supported in Linux. I would appreciate your personal experience with the CLI tools provided by LSI. Can they be configured to send email for disk failures or SMART errors? Is

Add support for in-process profile merging in profile-runtime
One of the main missing features in Clang/LLVM profile runtime is the lack of support for online/in-process profile merging support. Profile data collected for different workloads for the same executable binary need to be collected and merged later by the offline post-processing tool. This limitation makes it hard to handle cases where the instrumented binary needs to be run with large number of

real SATA RAID
Hi Last week I had a lengthy thread in which someone indicated the my SIL card is a FRAID (don't know if F stands for the F word or Fake, though it doesn't really matter). I want to replace the controller with a controller that Linux will see the RAID1 group as a single HD and not multiple HDs as it happens with the SIL controller. Recommendations anyone? -- TIA Paolo --------------

ot: vlans and vmware
Does anyone have VLAN tagging working from within a guest on vmware-server? I'm running a centos 4.5 guest on a centos 5 host with vmware server 1.04and I've tried creating vlans using both the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts method and just doing it from the cli via vconfig. Either way appears to work, the OS creates the vlans, but I think vmware's network adapter must be eating the

I don't believe that is correct. LSI acquired 3ware, and Avago acquired LSI. So, Avago owns the 3ware and LSI technology, but Adaptec and Areca are still competitors. > Whoops, Avago is now Broadcom, a

FreeBSD 9 "gptboot: invalid backup GPT header" error (boots fine though)
I've been deploying FreeBSD 9 without issue on a number of near-identical servers for a client, but have run into an interesting annoyance when I hit the two DB servers. These DB servers have an LSI 3ware 9750-8i (running a 6 disk RAID 10 in a single 3TB virtual volume) which puts them apart from the other two servers in this cluster (which don't show either issue I am about to
