Xen, Amazon, and /proc/cmdline
Amazon (or perhaps Amazon's configuration of Xen) forces a machine to come up at run level 4, regardless of what's in /etc/inittab. I've looked through /etc/rc.sysinit and /etc/rc.d/rc, to determine which (if any script) looks at /proc/cmdline and forces a particular run level, but to no avail. It seems that /sbin/init does the forcing. Can anyone confirm that /sbin/init reads

Hi CentOS Docs team, I am writing to request for updating the wiki page HowTos/BuildingKernelModules[1] Basically, the page need some love for more recent CentOS releases - in CentOS 7 if people use the in-distro /usr/lib/rpm/redhat/kmodtool the following command won't work rpmbuild -bb --target=`uname -m` --define 'kversion 3.10.0-862.el7' testkmod.spec Instead, people should use

C7 Kernel module compilation
Hey there, I'm trying to compile a single module following this guide: https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/BuildingKernelModules#head-d2e4c05886f94c701e4ae74387d41d8c40c25d01 and https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/I_need_the_Kernel_Source I tried to compile a module for novuton led controller supplied by thirdparty and I got several error. To check if this is the wrong procedure I tried to

long pages
hi guys, some of the pages on the wiki are getting quite large ( eg. http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/BuildingKernelModules ), and its not easy to work out what all might be included in the page, without actually going through most of it ( were going to loose context in this case ) What would be a better option ? to split the pages up into more manageable chunks or to just create an index on

Alan, I knew of the Dell article, as I have all of those saved for reference. [1] I was just wondering if you knew of any that were for someone knew to Linux. You know the Microsoft type tutorials that have screenshot with them. That's the question I get asked a lot of times from around my home area. In turn when these users that are new to Linux they get discouraged when they can't

Building a custom install CD
Greetings, I am looking for resources on how to build my own Centos install CD for a preselected package set that I want to install. I think Red Hat may have had this functionality at some point but it has been a while since I have needed to do this. I found this on how to build my own kernel - http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/BuildingKernelModules - which I will need to exercise as well, but I

Centos 7 newer kernel needed
Dear Laurentiu, Agree with Johnny for kernel upgrade if upgrade helps, alternative if 3.10 or above already supported it, you can check from kernel parameter or options if they are disabled on purpose. You can do that via the "make menuconfig" via "https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/I_need_the_Kernel_Source" or "https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/BuildingKernelModules". Hope

Current recommended approach to "chat room"-type app?
Hi, I''ve been googling around looking for a good approach to doing live updates of my webpage. I''ve got a fairly extensive application already, using traditional rails, and I''d like to have a page update in real-time, hopefully without having to completely rewrite the app. One of the most promising approaches looks like Faye, but the railscast I saw was from 10 months

test unit approach?
I''m just getting back to looking at backgroundrb after a long hiatus since June. I''m looking at creating some workers but I''m a bit stuck as to how I should write tests for them. What''s the recommended approach for unit testing of workers? The project will ultimately be used by a Rails app but I''m comfortable developing the worker code as a

Is this the best approach?
Hello, I''m working on a Rails app with a fairly complex set of model relationships. I''m abandoning my MySQL based search mechanism for Ferret/acts_as_ferret in the hopes of being able to more easily and effectivly enable searching. Before I get coding I was wondering if you folks might be able to tell me if my plan makes sense, or what could be a better way. The situation is as
