Vmware server on centos x86_64server
I had this working once but had to re-use the machine and didn't keep track of what it took. Does anyone have a list of the extra packages needed to run vmware server on a machine with the single-disk x86_64 server install + updates. glibc.i686 installed ok, but xorg-x11-libs.i386 has a conflict with fontconfig that I don't recall from the previous time. Could that have changed with the

what updates /etc/localtime?
I see in CentOS 7 that /etc/localtime is a symlink (which seems sensible...) but in earlier versions it is a copy of some file from under /usr/share/zoneinfo. rpm -q --scripts tzdata does not show any postinstall script, so in the non-symlink versions, how does the copied /etc/localtime file get updated with new zone data? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell at gmail.com

VMWare disaster recovery?
I found this in the large and growing list of downloadable vmware appliances: http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/316. I haven't run it yet, but it claims to provide a way to mirror running windows boxes over iscsi to vmware disk images, then allows you to boot that image under vmware as a replacement for the server with little downtime. Has anyone attempted something like this

vmware tools in CentOS5 guest?
Does anyone have vmware-tools from the recent server 1.03 release running in a CentOS5 guest VM? vmware-config-tools.pl goes through the motions except for building the vmhgfs module (which it says is only needed for mapping the host file system) but then X won't start up with the new configuration. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell at gmail.com

VLAN issue
Less, You are 100% right. Of course I brought up my eth0 - but, like you said, with no IP. Meanwhile, I brought up eth0.48 with 192.168.48.100. However, until I would bring up eth0 with an IP address (any in the network) I would have no connection. Why? That's what I fail to understand. Boris. So much for elrepo being a painless way to get working Nvidia drivers... Yum update (or just update glibc) says: --> Processing Dependency: /usr/sbin/ldconfig for package: nvidia-x11-drv-304xx-304.123-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64 --> Finished Dependency Resolution Error: Package: nvidia-x11-drv-304xx-304.123-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64 (@elrepo) Requires: /usr/sbin/ldconfig Removing:

Fix passwd/shadow/group files?
I've been copying old passwd/shadow/group files from system to system for ages across different distributions/updates and would like to get them back in sync with each other so the system tools will work. Now they hang like: #userdel irose hangs forever, syslog says: Jul 12 11:19:32 newftp userdel[30335]: delete user `irose' Jul 12 11:19:32 newftp userdel[30335]: delete `irose'

how to stop yum when networkmanager has broken resolv.conf?
Oh, and if you don't have killall installed, you can use: ps -ef | grep yum to get the pid and then use: kill -TERM pid or easier even is: kill -TERM `pid of yum` Chris On Fri, Feb 20, 2015 at 4:13 PM, Chris Stone <axisml at gmail.com> wrote: > try CTRL-Z to put that running process in your shell to sleep, then: > > bg 1 > > to put the process in the background.
