DNS is confusing! (I really need some help understanding!)
OK, I am confused and DNS is the reason. So, Comcast, 13 public IP's bound to my modem. Each public IP has a DNS name from comcast (they assign it automatically) like: 173.13.167.209 --> 173-13-167-209-sfba.hfc.comcastbusiness.net I created a DNS entry at GoDaddy for 173.13.167.209 that is 'inhouse.theindiecompanyllc.com' When eth0 is alive, I see that it tells me my name

More about firewalling
Hi All, So before when I used PIX's for my employer, our traffic was statically routed to one IP and then the firewall decided if allowed/ denied and passed it on or dropped it. I have a Comcast business circuit with 13 IP's. The gateway device they provide is a 'pass through' device. They sent traffic for all 13 IP's my way. It just allows traffic through. So if I put

Build a Firewall (Can I learn to do this...)
Hi All, I have a home business circuit and I am gearing up to host my business affairs in my place. I have Comcast and 13 static IP's. I have an extra PIII 1U, 2 9gb SCSI, 1gb RAMm dual NICS. So I am wanting to build a firewall to front end my traffic. Assign one of my statics to it and have Comcast statically route my traffic to this IP. Then when traffic comes have it decide if it

business ssl certs for centos www and/or email servers
Although I know the basics about getting and installing web and mail server ssl certs, I haven't had to "purchase" and do it "myself" for some time. i always had someone else dealing with it. I am wondering what you folks on the list are using on your centos web and mail servers :-) Are you making your own or are you purchasing them from godaddy, thawte, geotrust,

Installing an SSL Cert
HI All, I am considering buying this: http://www.godaddy.com/Compare/gdcompare_ssl.aspx?isc=sslqgo003a Since I have a domain that will be collecting data and processing payments. Where can I find instructions on how to install the certificate? Do I have to run another domain or sub domain for the store? Or can I just run the whole domain on https? Thanks, -Jason

OT: Ecommerce hosting
Would appreciate some suggestions for ecommerce hosting. Been using, cough, cough, godaddy, for about 5 or 6 yrs but in the last year or so, they really suck. Did the hosting myself for a while prior to going with godaddy but I don't have time to babysit. Seems godaddy would rather spend millions advertising during the Super Bowl than put that money to good use. TIA!!

Dedicated Firewall/Router
Hi All, I want to build a dedicated firewall/router as I am launching a NPO and I can host this in my garage. (Comcast offered me a 100 x 20 circuit for $99/mo with 5 statics) I used to run Untangle, but as of version 9, you are forced to use their build in protocol policies versus the firewalling I am used to (Deny All and then opening holes for specific IP's, etc). There are so many

OT: free DNS service?
I have been using a free DNS service for the past seven (7) years. This morning, at 4 A.M., , I changed the "A" record for one of my web sites, to point to an IP address on a different server, so I could test. After watching the TTL count down from 3600 to zero, with the "dig" command, it then reset to 3600, but still resolved to the original IP address. :-) I set the

Frustrations with MySQL loss, tcpdump, netstat, etc
Hi All, Hi All, MySQL 5.0.77 on CentOS 5.4 MySQL is running, my Wordpress stuff is working, but I cannot connect to the server from my house. This server is in my house, however, but on a public IP, behind a firewall, etc. I checked my hardware firewall (a dedicated UnTangle system) and that is successfully allowing the passage. I know this because the firewall shows: 2009-12-22 6:29:41 am

Hum/bux on line
Rich Hi, After Qwest pronounced my circuits as within spec. (yes, disconnected from the house) I listened on the lines with my butt set. Clear of all noise and hum. I then got my box of Cat3 and laid a circuit around the outside of the house and into my lab. Still clear of all noise and hum. I then connected the circuit to the Adtran and made a call. Lots of hum and buzzz. As I said,

How to treat UPS status of TRIM as on line
I am using NUT 2.6.5 as part of FreeNAS 9.2.0. I am using an APC Smart-UPS 5000 RM DL4 with a AP9619 network management card. NUT properly detects when the UPS goes on battery and initiates a shutdown after the configured time. The problem I have is that I am using a 208V unit on a 240V circuit. That means the normal state for the UPS is "TRIM". NUT doesn't treat that as an on line

Firefox seg faults
Hi, I have two very similar AMD based work stations running fully current CentOS x86_64. Both have 4Gb of RAM, both have [rkampen at media ~]$ sudo rpm -qa |grep flash flash-plugin-10.0.22.87-release.i386 [rkampen at media ~]$ sudo rpm -qa |grep fire firefox-3.0.6-1.el5.centos.i386 One machine (home) works fine on my web page www.ndgonline.net/ndg/ the other (work) seg faults - I guess it is

summary( prcomp(*, tol = .) ) -- and 'rank.'
I agree with Kasper, this is a 'big' issue. Does your method of taking only n PCs reduce the load on memory? The new addition to the summary looks like a good idea, but Proportion of Variance as you describe it may be confusing to new users. Am I correct in saying Proportion of variance describes the amount of variance with respect to the number of components the user chooses to show? So

back-porting 1.1.1 app to 1.0 rails server
I''ve been developing new application on local machine in rails 1.1.1. Hosting provider (godaddy) is at rails 1.0.0 and not upgrading any time soon I''m told. I set "RAILS_GEM_VERSION = ''1.0.0''" in my environment.rb file to get past inital errors, but now I''m getting the following error:

Woodpeckers Revisited
Just when I thought I couldn't be wrong, I was wrong. We have woodpeckers that drill into the arial telephone cables, and water seeps through the holes and partially grounds the tip and/or ring wires causing hum. I thought the hum/buz on my lines was a telco problem. The Qwest HQ noise team assures me that my lines are within spec. Sure enough, when I listen on the test set the lines

PSTN Incoming call on real line disrupts VoIPcall over DSL circuit - EXPLAINED
DSL works by using the frequencies above 4k that were unused in POTS loops of yesterday. Load Coils, Bridge Taps, and DC taps are all devices added to lines to increase their reach and stability, unfortunately, they are DEADLY for DSL. Other problems can effect DSL service, and cause it to be 'flaky'. 1 Temperature, in Florida the large black cables are constantly beaten down by the sun,

Deploying my rails app to GoDaddy
So I''ve written my first real-world RoR app and I''m now getting ready to deploy it. Unfortunately, my client decided to use GoDaddy as the hosting provider and based on what I''ve seen so far from the web, it''s not really the smoothest or ideal hosting for RoR apps. There were several posts here that I tried to follow but they were kinda old (2008, 2007). Most of
