NetworkManager under CentOS 4 *without* GNome...
I have been *manually* dealing with my wired and wireless network
interfaces on my laptop. I have a pair of config files (in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/: ifcfg-eth0 (wired: Intel Corporation
82540EP Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Mobile)) and ifcfg-eth1 (wireless:
Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter), both with
USERCTL=true (and ifcfg-eth0 also has ONBOOT=true). I have

nm-applet, wirless, and CentOS 6
I have a strange problem and I know I am doing things way outside of the box.
First of all I don't like Gnome or really any of the mess-windows flavored
desktop systems and no, I don't like the MacOSX flavored desktop systems (like
Ubuntu's Unity) either. The 'desktop' system (if you could have called it
that) that I learned on was DEC's 'DecWindows' system on

Ctrl-Alt-F? bindings broken under xen 3.0.3-142.el5_9.1 / 2.6.18-348.1.1.el5xen?
I am not sure what I did, but for some reason Ctrl-Alt-F? bindings are
broken on 64-bit xen desktop machine (but not on my laptop (32-bit, no
xen)). Both machines are (mostly) up-to-date and running CentOS 5.9.
I rarely hop to different Virtual Consoles (eg Ctrl-Alt-F1 ...
Ctrl-Alt-F7), but today I wanted to go to the main console to watch
some kernel verbage (I was checking something with

pdf page limit?
Is there a limit on the number of pages that can be in a pdf file? I am
using pdf() (on R version 1.4.1, running on Red Hat 7.1 on an Intel box)
to create a large (> 300 pages) file of diagnostic plots. If I plot
every figure I want to include (364 pages, according to Acroread ver.
5.0.5), neither xpdf on Linux nor Acroread ver 5.0.5 on Win98 can render
the file. xpdf give the error message:

Linux apps from inside Wine (was:Re: Problems with Lotus Notes R5.0.12 under Wine 20050524)
Hi Shadi,
I'm also using notes 5.0.12 and I've posted at May,05-2005 a
message just talking about how to start Linux apps from a Windows app
over/under Wine. The only problem is that I'm not using wine-20050524 ...
8-(. Instead I'm using 20040813.
Follows the message. Feel free to ask me more questions and if you
want I can send to you another types of scripts.

acroread = resource hog
Any have trouble with acroread taking up massive cpu and memory?
I exited my Firefox browser and the lil bastard was still hogging up
my resources.
Took up 69% of 4GB, and wouldn't let go, until a kill -9 showed'em,
have to do it every time I open a pdf in firefox.
Any use Xpdf or something else?

Linux apps from inside Wine (was:Re: Problems with Lotus Notes R5.0.12 under Wine 20050524)
Hi Andreas,
I saw someone (Mike or Joachim, I think) at the list saying you
have to shutdown the wineserver. It will overwrite the system.reg as soon
it goes down. So before you make the changes be sure there is none wine*
process running.
Hope this helps. If not, write us again and we'll help you

PDF and PS output
I'm using R 2.0 on Redhat Linux 9. When I try to produce PDF or PS
output, the files are corrupted -- they won't open in Acroread, xpdf,
ggv, and on attempting to convert to PNG, I get message "This file has
corrupted %%EOF marker." Perhaps I am just doing something wrong. I
did:

I have no trouble viewing the output in Xwindows.

This is neither a bug report, nor a complaint, so I think this is the

Wrong symbol rendering in plots (Ubuntu)
Hi I am having problems with the rendering of scientific symbols (mu and
degree) in my plots. Whenever I use these symbols they are rendered
changed (mu is changed to the proportionality symbol and degree is
changed to something resembling a gamma) in the X-device. If I make a
pdf of the plot and open the file in Evince or Okular symbols are also
rendered wrong, however if I open the file

Follow-up on "openPDF" command
Colleagues,
Several days ago, I queried about using the "system" command to open a
PDF file. A number of people responded, each providing useful ideas.
I integrated these ideas into a function that others can tailor to
their needs:
OPENPDF <- function(PDFFILENAME)
{
OPENPDFCOMMAND <- "open" # applies to OS X

For some unfathomable reason, named 'wedges' -- becomes unresponsive and
needs to be killed (with -9!) and restarted.
I am using an intermittent (it is not a dedicated phone line -- I also
use it for voice calls), dialup connection to the internet and I am
using forwarding (from /etc/named.conf):

need help setting up a printer
I'm trying to setup a print share with samba-2.2.4 that 9x and 2k clients
should be able to print to.
Below is my current setup listing only printer related options.
My first concern right now is that I have cups running with the pdfdistiller
script to format print jobs into pdf documents.
I'm not using a real printer for this.
I need samba to display the cups printer called PDF_Printer so

GUI Front End for OpenLDAP admin (users & groups)
Does there exist a GUI Front End for OpenLDAP admin for CentOS 5 (RHEL
5)?
The binary (i386) rpm for directory_adminstrator works just fine with
CentOS 4, but does't install under CentOS 5 and the src RPM does not
build (I hacked the spec file and did install the build deps, but it is
using an old hack for finding libgnome (/usr/lib/gnomeConf.sh or
something like that).
I installed
