OT: Fortunate clueless dd chum - lvm recovery
Looks like the chum did not have to lose any data. Wiping out the MBR and the next 63 blocks apparently only wiped out grub stage1, partition table, and part of the lvm config data. I get to try to do a lvm 'recovery' at his expense now but this is my first time...has anybody ever tried restoring lvm config data back to the md/pv device? Cheers, Christopher

I'd like to contribute two wiki articles
Hi, I've written two small howtos, and would like to contribute them to the CentOS Wiki. The first one is "How to install CentOS 5 on software partitionable mdadm RAID1", and the second one "How to repair a software mdadm RAID5 with two or more failed disks (if you know that information is still on the disks and readable)". I think that the first one should be somewhere

are these errors dangerous
Hi everyone, I''ve been running a zfs fileserver for about a month now (on snv_91) and it''s all working really well. I''m scrubbing once a week and nothing has come up as a problem yet. I''m a little worried as I''ve just noticed these messages in /var/adm/message and I don''t know if they''re bad or just informational: Aug 2 14:46:06

Interactions in a nls model
I am interested in testing two similar nls models to determine if the lines are statistically different when fitted with two different data sets; one corn, another soybean. I know I can do this in linear models by testing for interactions. See Introductory Statistics with R by Dallgaard p212-218 for an example. I have two different data sets I am comparing to lai. ci.re should have very

Suppose I have two columns of entries, how can I get the union of the two columns? Please note: I input my columns through excel. These entries have text format in excel. Also, out of curiosity, how can I find out the data type of a data frame ? > a <- read.csv("book1.csv") > a n1 n2 1 apple soda 2 orange apple 3 soda green 4 red yellow 5 white blue 6

Which function to use: grep, replace, substr etc.?
Hello, I have a simple question but I don't know which method is best to use for my problem. I have the following strings: str1 <- "My_name_is_peter" str2 <- "what_is_your_surname_peter" I would like to apply predefined abbreviations for peter=p and name=n to both strings so that the new strings look like the followings: str1: "My_n_is_p" str2:

question about Software for Data analysis book
Dear R People: I'm sure that this is a very silly question, but I'm reading the Software for Data analysis book by John Chambers, and I can't find the "Declination" data that he refers to on page 15 in the book. I did all of the usual stuff: library(help=SoDA) ??Declination looked for it online but to no avail. Has anyone else run into this, please? Any help would be

Networking not working for Windows game
Hi everybody, I'm running an old game called SODA Off-Road Racing in Wine. Everything runs perfectly in the game, except networking. I added test results for it to the AppDB. Does anyone know of anything I can try to get networking working properly in the game? So far I've tried a suggestion from the Wine FAQ to change /etc/hosts to show my IP instead of a loopback address.

combine column names
Dear R-list, Is there any way I can extract part or whole column name from two variables and combine them? Not values, but column names. For example, I have data set with 70 variables. The column names are "Alfalfa", "Corn","Soybean",..."Sunflower". After I combine the two variable (say Alfalfa and Corn), I want to rename it as "AlfCor" or
