When should LVM be used?
In my old computer I have a much bigger hard drive then in this one -- and I plan to hand that old computer down to one of my sons -- keeping his current drive from an even older computer. Currently the hard drive on my old computer has SuSE Linux, but that will go. I'll rebuild CentOS 5.5 on it, but I want to leave some free space for whatever comes up and also dual-boot Vector Linux. Which,

loaded Unreal Tournament (GTOY) runs choppy Ubuntu 11.10
I loaded Unreal Tournament in wine 1.3.37 and everything works that I tried but the video is choppy. The sound was not choppy but the video was. It did not matter if I was playing online or the bots on my computer the video was choppy. I tried raising and lowering the video resolutions and it did not seem to effect the problem for better or worse. I am using Ubuntu 64 bit 11.10. I am on an AMD

CentOS or other Linux Internet Router/Gateway
Hi Everyone, I've got kids who are growing older and I want to build a Linux box to filter Internet access. I've got six computers on the Internet, plus the laptops -- most run Windows. I'm not sure if it's called a router or gateway or...? I don't mind doing the leg work, I just don't know where to start. I'm pretty sure I'm *not* looking for a web server (though

Booting from a USB hard drive?
I'm trying to learn Asterisk (specifically Trixbox) and, as you probably know, it runs on CentOS. I want to run it on my laptop and thought that I could install it to an external USB hard drive, like I've done with Fedora 12 and Linux Mint 8 (I like to keep my small CentOS/Windows dual booting hard drive in the laptop's hard drive slot). But it won't work. It kept giving me hard

Firefox 3.5 Issues
I downloaded Firefox 3.5 from the M. Harris site and, for the most part, have had good luck with it. But I have also had hard crashes that take down CentOS, not just Firefox. It happened to me twice on eBay (on the same page) -- and now I can replicate it as many times as I want by going to... http://wiki.centos.org/Newsletter ...and choosing one of the two newsletters, linked there. I'm

Troubles for an non-IT beginner
hello, I am absolutely new, means from non-IT sector but have attraction (developed recently) towards linux and have chosen the centos distro for the installation as an OS in my home PC for personal use. I went to the page: http://isoredirect.centos.org/centos/5/isos/i386/ But don't understand amongst the variety of options there. I also don't know the technical terms like md5,

RHEL, centos and seeing if i now understand this
ok, given the flurry of responses to my original post, let me see if i have a handle on this as i think i've finally figured it out and, yes, it does make sense. the scenario is that there is a very large software company in the area whose only officially supported linux platform is currently suse. however, they are getting increasing call to have their product run on red hat. for most

Running amanda on CentOS 7: "amanda-udp.service failed."
I am trying to get amanda backup going on a CentOS 7 system and things are not working: sharky4.deepsoft.com% sudo systemctl start amanda-udp [sudo] password for heller: Job for amanda-udp.service failed because a configured resource limit was exceeded. USB Serial ports (ttyACMn) CentOS 6.7 (64-bit) vs. CentOS 6.7 (64-bit)
I have two computers: both running CentOS 6.7, 64-bit, with kernel 2.6.32-573.12.1.el6.x86_64. One is a laptop with an 2 core Intel processor and the other is a desktop machine with a 4 core AMD processor. Both with selinux enabled. I have a USB serial port device (a RR-CirKits LCC-Buffer USB). On the desktop I am getting this error: sauron.deepsoft.com% sudo minicom Device /dev/ttyACM0

Lilo for CentOS 5?
Does there exist a version of Lilo built for x86_64 CentOS 5? It does not seem to be on the DVD. *I* really, really, prefer Lilo over Grub. -- Robert Heller -- 978-544-6933 Deepwoods Software -- Download the Model Railroad System http://www.deepsoft.com/ -- Binaries for Linux and MS-Windows heller at deepsoft.com -- http://www.deepsoft.com/ModelRailroadSystem/

nm-applet, wirless, and CentOS 6
I have a strange problem and I know I am doing things way outside of the box. First of all I don't like Gnome or really any of the mess-windows flavored desktop systems and no, I don't like the MacOSX flavored desktop systems (like Ubuntu's Unity) either. The 'desktop' system (if you could have called it that) that I learned on was DEC's 'DecWindows' system on

filter unwanted email
I am new to CentOS. How do I set a rule to so that any email coming from @ linkedin.com (and other abused locations), going to an application RT (setup on the system), will get rejected or dropped silently. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Firefox 78 under CentOS 6 -- no sound?
I did a yum update on my CentOS 6 laptop and it upgraded Firefox to 78, and FF stopped seeing my mic and speakers. Is there some magic I need to do? As a short term (?) fix, I downgraded back to Firefox 68. My system is otherwise up-to-date. -- Robert Heller -- Cell: 413-658-7953 GV: 978-633-5364 Deepwoods Software -- Custom Software Services http://www.deepsoft.com/ --

Updated Spam Assassin for CentOS 5...
I am wondering about updating the version of Spam Assassin on my CentOS 5 mail server. The current version, 3.3.1-4.el5 (stock RHEL version), has been 'leaking' recently. I suspect I need some newer match rules to detect some of the newer flavors of spam. I see that in rpmforge's extras repo is version 3.3.2-4.el5.rfx -- is this version worth installing? Are there even newer versions

Question about the ahci kernel module: missing in the CentOS (4) Plus kernel
Is there some reason the ahci kernel module is *missing* from the 2.6.9-89.0.16.plus.c4 kernel? It is in the standard 2.6.9-89.0.16.EL kernel. Is this due to an oversight or is there some sort of conflict? I wanted to add IEEE1394 support to my system running CentOS 4.8. I *looks* like what I need to do is download the kernel SRPM and patch the config to include the IEEE1394 modules and

CentOS 6, Postfix, and Procmail -- how do I get it to work?

I have: -bash-4.1$ grep allow_mail_to_commands /etc/postfix/main.cf allow_mail_to_commands = alias, forward and -bash-4.1$ cat .forward |/usr/bin/procmail and a .procmailrc file: -bash-4.1$ cat .procmailrc PATH=/usr/bsd:/bin:/usr/bin:/exp/rcf/share/bin MAILDIR=/var/lib/amanda/Mail #you'd better
