Sound with headphones on: Streamaudio perfect but youtube and system-config-soundcard silent
This afternoon, I bought a pair of ear plugs (the large flat kind that
hook onto my ears). Plugged them in to test and they work perfectly.
I'm listening to streamaudio.com as I type this. However, when I
tried to watch a youtube.com video (my wife exercise dancing) just
silence. She had the same video on to test and the sound was fine on
her box. Then, I tried system-config-soundcard and

How to troubleshoot partial shutdown problem?
Hi folks,
I've never encountered the following problem before (but I guess there
is a first time for everything) --- after issuing a regular shutdown,
the system starts the shutdown procedure, but stalls at some point, and
never finishes. It gets to the console, writes the "powering down"
message and stops there --- the hardware never actually powers off. At
that time, the machine

[OT] DHCP auth&auth software
Does anyone know about some free (as in beer, and maybe as in speech) software
which would implement authentication and authorization of a user prior to
issuing a valid dhcp lease?
I imagine the following scenario: someone walks into my office building with a
laptop (a colleague, a visitor, a guest, whoever), and hooks up onto the local
net (wired or wireless). The server detects an unknown

Yum refuses to install kmod-8188eu from elrepo
I am having trouble using the realtek wifi chip in my new tp-link
usb wifi dongle. Upon plugging it, the device gets registered by the
kernel (in /var/log/messages), but that's about it, no network device
is being created (iwconfig does not see it, nothing else works).
A few google searches later I found out that this realtek chip is not
supported by the kernel and requires a driver, and that

Audio/video recording software
Hi everyone! :-)
I am supposed to get (for the first time) into the world of making youtube
clips. I have a webcam, a microphone and a big hard drive configured and ready.
The question is: what would you suggest as an easy-to-use yum-installable app
that could handle a couple of minutes/hours of recording?
People who are about to use it are complete noobs, and I would like to give
them a

Grub configuration from within Windows
My friend uses a typical dual-boot setup (Windows XP and Centos 5.3).
The machine is online 24/7 and he often uses it from a remote location
(Linux via ssh -X, Windows via rdesktop).
The problem is that he wants to be able to remotely configure which of
these two OSes is to be the default on next reboot, so he can switch
from one OS to the other and back remotely. If Linux is up, he just
needs to

to shut it down and get into the BIOS to check for the "wake on lan"

RE: [Asterisk] How to select server ardware?
Hi Chris,
I know this is quite an old email, but I was browsing through the archive :)
I am currently working on "embedding" asterisk in one of Allwell's STB's.
The idea is more or less exactly like yours. The STB will be solid-state
and contain OS, Asterisk, Basic configuration and voice files on a flash
disk. It will boot up and get a network share via DHCP. This network

[C6] Some typical apps missing?
Hi everyone! :-)
I just installed CentOS 6 on one of my desktop machines, and yum now
tells me that some of my favorite apps are not present in any of the
repositories I configured. To name a few: ktorrent, kile, krusader,
pavucontrol, mplayerplug-in (or is it now gecko-mediaplayer), xine,
xmms, and so on... All these apps were readily available for C5, and I
used them happily.
I am mostly

Voice Modem + Soundcard Driver
The problem with using Voice Modems is that they fall into two categories:
1) Hardware Modems which only have half-duplex transmission of voice
2) Soft/Win/Lin modems which are proprietry and don't have asterisk drivers
Please shoot down this recipe before I waste any time trying to acheive it:

Touchpad doesn't work with C6, kernel-related...
Hi folks! :-)
I have a Fujitsu Lifebook U series laptop running updated CentOS 6.4
(64bit), and the touchpad doesn't work. It's a new laptop, the touchpad
works correctly in Fedora 18 Live (given the kernel parameters below),
no hardware problems.
I searched the web all around, and it's a known issue for several
laptop models. The only solution, quoted everywhere, it is to append the

Isa Soundcard under CentOS 5
Hello,
Under Fedora Core 6 I used to integrate the soundcard of my notebook
with modprobe snd-opl3sa2. Now, after changing my system to CentOS 5,
I could not find this module for my isa soundcard any more.
