Simple audio recording app?
Hi,
I'd like to get my microphone to work (mainly to use it with Skype).
I've just been looking for a simple audio recording app, as I vaguely
remember having seen such a thing before, only I can't seem to find it
anymore. I'm using the default GNOME desktop with the latest CentOS 5.
Any suggestions?

Skype on CentOS 5 - my microphone settings are incorrect
Note: The Wiki for Skype needs a tiny update.
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Skype
It's not a Beta now. Last night, I downloaded and
installed skype-2.0.0.63-centos.i586.rpm
The Skype web site calls this a "Gold" release.
I'm having the same problem I had when I tried to use the Skype Beta.
It's not picking up audio from the microphone. The hardware works
fine, when I'm

Correctly setting up sound with Intel High Definition ICH7
Hi,
Earlier this day I started a thread about Skype not working with
outgoing sound. Now I wonder if it's not a problem with my soundcard. I
had a vague suspicion about this, but since it's way off the original
topic, I decided to start a new thread about this.
Here's what the soundcard looks like:
[root at grossebertha etc]# lspci | grep -i audio

Optimizing this script for calling Skype users from Asterisk
I have written this configuration script which uses OpenSky to make Skype
calls directly from Asterisk devices using my companies SIP to Skype
gateway. Users can dial skype_anyskypeusername or manually add names or
extensions which can get mapped to the correct dialing sequence. The right
sequence is username at opensky.gizmo5.com but that gets mapped to sipphone
address so I set that up to map

Software RAID and GRUB on CentOS 7
Hi,
When I perform a software RAID 1 or RAID 5 installation on a LAN server
with several hard disks, I wonder if GRUB already gets installed on each
individual MBR, or if I have to do that manually. On CentOS 5.x and 6.x,
this had to be done like this:
# grub
grub> device (hd0) /dev/sda
grub> device (hd1) /dev/sdb
grub> root (hd0,0)
grub> setup (hd0)
grub> root (hd1,0)
grub>

Skype for SIP
Anyone connected up to it yet?
http://www.skypeforsip.com/
It would seem to make Digiums chan_skype rather pointness, or am I missing
something?
Or is this Digiums chan_skype in a hosted box somewhere?

how do I make my headset work
How do I make my headset work.
Before I try it with anything else, I'd like to make it work
with arecord and aplay.
VLC and movie player can make sounds with my external speakers.
though not in my headset yet.
I've got an insignia NS-PAH5101 headset.
As directed, the red connector is in the pink spot and
the green connector in green spot in the back of my computer.

OT: Forum or mailing list for Bash-related questions?
Hi,
The subject says it all. After a few years of writing scripts the quick
and dirty way, I've decided to take the plunge and learn Bash correctly,
using the O'Reilly Bash Cookbook. I'm currently looking for the right
place to ask questions, but curiously enough, Google searches about
"bash forum" result in nothing conclusive. I took a peek in the
corresponding USENET

Custom wallpaper on CentOS 7?
Hi,
I just installed CentOS 7 + GNOME on my Asus S300 laptop. So far
everything runs very nice and smoothly, and I'm quite happy with it.
Curiously enough, I can't seem to be able to set a custom wallpaper. I
tried various locations like /usr/share/backgrounds,
/usr/share/backgrounds/gnome and /usr/share/backgrounds/images, but the
images don't appear in the wallpaper selection

Localize CUPS?
Hi,
I've been setting up a networked printer in a 100% Linux LAN, and
there's only one small problem left: how do I localize the CUPS
interface (e. g. the pages I see when opening http://localhost:631 in a
browser)?
My system is localized in french. LANG is fr_FR.UTF-8 in
/etc/sysconfig/i18n. And I checked Firefox: it's supposed to open web
content in French.
Curiously, I had

Who's eating our bandwidth?
Hi,
I've recently setup a new server for our public libraries. For the last
two years, this has been my first "big" job, since it involves
networking eleven small to medium size public libraries.
There was a hiccup some time ago when the administration hiring me
wanted to do it on their own, but it took them less than two weeks to
get the server hacked and lose everything. So

Testing and using a microphone
Hi,
What's the most simple way to check if my microphone works on a plain
CentOS 5.3 desktop? Is there a simple way, for example, to record voice
into a simple .wav file?

Permission problem
Hi,
I have to solve an apparently simple permission problem, and I don't
know if it's the sunny weather or birdsong, well... I just can't figure
it out. Here goes.
I have a bunch of users in a public library. Some are "administrators":
they handle the library, write the docs for everyone, etc. Then you have
the "agents", who take care of lending books and

Nginx and SELinux on CentOS 7
Hi,
I'm currently fiddling with Nginx on CentOS 7. Eventually I want to use it
instead of Apache on some servers.
Apache works more or less out of the box with SELinux. My websites are all
stored under /var/www, and ls -Z shows me that all files created under /var/www
are correctly labeled httpd_sys_content_t.
On my sandbox server I don't have Apache (httpd) installed, only Nginx

Define HTTP proxy system-wide (Squid and Squidguard) ?
Hi,
I'm currently configuring Squid and Squidguard for filtering web access
in a public computer room. So far, everything works fine.
I know how to configure Firefox to use a proxy, but there's no way to
protect that configuration, e. g. a more knowledgeable user might
circumvent this configuration. Is there some way to configure an HTTP
proxy system-wide?
Cheers from the sunny

No sound from IVR scripts, yet calls placed without any problem.
Hi,
Bit of a puzzle this one - let's see if anybody else can shed some light...
I Ghosted my Asterisk box to build one for a colleague.
I added one HFC card to make the total two and amended zaptel.conf and
zapata.conf accordingly.
I tested it with my handsets on my ISDN lines and it worked AOK.
I unplugged the box and took it to his house and plugged it in.
He doesn't have any ISDN

CUPS oddity
Hi,
I've been setting up a few printer servers with CUPS. Our public
libraries here all run 100% Linux (CentOS 5), so what I do is simply
install the printer on one of the machines (with a static IP) and then
configure CUPS so it can act as a printer server for Linux clients.
It took me some time to figure this out, and I remember pulling my hair
out for a few sunny afternoons, but I

Samba share configuration: r/w for some users, read-only for others
Hi,
I'm using Samba for some basic setups like open shares for everybody, or
restricted shares with Samba users and passwords. So far, everything
works fine.
I have two situations which both more or less amount to the same, and I
don't know how to configure it. One is in a school, the other one in a
town hall.
1) In the school, I'd like to configure a share that is readable and

Actually, I mistook black for green.
Green was occupied by my external speakers.
Putting the headset's green plug in the
