Problems with openssh and pam_abl
I want to use sshd together with pam_abl to reduce
that logfile spamming with ssh attacks.
So the problem is as follows:
Setting maxAuthTries to 0 or any other values smaller than the default
of 6 changes the behaviour of pam_abl.
First, but this also happens with not using maxAuthTries option, is:
if the clientside closes connection after for example one failed
authentication try then the

Encrypted remote backup?
Can anyone recommend a commercial off site remote backup service with a
client (preferably FOSS) for CentOS 5, preferably that allows encryption
of the data being backed up?
Small scale, I'm primarily looking to just back up my mail folder on my
server.
I've been backing it up to local hd via rsync but that drive just died,
I'd prefer to have it backed up to somewhere more stable

Lock session vs. End session
In security terms, is there any difference between ending a session (logout of
X) and locking a session?

pam_abl for CentOS 3?
I'm looking for an RPM (SRPM is OK) for pam_abl, suitable for
installation on a CentOS 3.5 system. I've googled without identifying
one I'm confident of. Would the one for Fedora 3 be expected to work?
If not, what?

Issue: unix fifo (named pipe) does not appear in share, attempts to read

OpenSSH 4.7: call for testing.
Hi All.
OpenSSH 4.7 is preparing for release so we are asking for any interested
folks to please test a snapshot. The main changes are:
* sshd(8) in new installations defaults to SSH Protocol 2 only.
Existing installations are unchanged.
* The SSH channel window size has been increased, which improves
performance on high-BDP networks.
* ssh(1) and sshd(8) now preserve MAC

How to delay failed ssh auth
Hi!
I need to delay failed ssh password authentication as an additional
measure against brute force ssh attacks. I understand, that shoud be
accomplished through pam, but googling gave me no example. I have CentOS
5.2.

Ajax.Request abort question
im using an Ajax.Request to hit a java servlet and do some processing.
during this time, if the user feels the process is taking too long, he/she
can hit a cancel button to kill the request... by calling the
*abort*function off of the transport, will that kill the processing
that my server
is doing as well or just make the client think that the process has ended?

ls : not UTF-8 compliant?
Sorry bugging you for this simple command.
ls command displays question marks for the local characters (ones not
included in 8859-1 space) in filenames.
ie.
[root at server aa]# touch ?arp
[root at server aa]# ls
??arp
[root at server aa]# ls -b #for octal escapes
\303\247arp
[root at server aa]#
However, ls|less, ls|more or vi <directory name> all display filename

ogg123 and plugger
Hi. I'm trying to get plugger to work with ogg123 and it does - sort of.
No matter what the song is, it plays 24 seconds of the song and then
dies. Same spot every time - I've tried with a short song (Janis Joplin
Mercedes Benz) and a long song (Cracker Eurotrash Girl).
I have this as the mime identification in the plugger rc file:
audio/ogg: ogg: Vorbis Ogg audio
application/x-ogg: ogg:

Effect.SlideDown/Up() and HTML issues
Hello,
I''m hoping this is the right place to ask these kind of questions. If not,
please excuse me. Anyway, the problem I''m having is that I have a HTML table
showing some tabular data and I want to use Effect.SlideDown/Up to allow the
user to interactively show "details" for each item (<tr><td> etc) in that
list.
I''ll do some pseudo-code for

It's free software, and that kind of is the point of Open Source.

To upgrade or not
My laptop is a Thinkpad T20 running CentOS 5.1
The reason it is running CentOS at all is because Fedora Core 6 was
workable on it, but Fedora 8 was a complete dog.
Anyway - with all the new desktop stuff in CentOS 5.2 I'm wondering if I
would be happier just leaving it at 5.1 rather than letting it update to
5.2.
Will 5.1 continue to get security fixes if I leave it at 5.1 or do I

Kalman Filter
Hi
My name is Vladimir Samaj. I am a student of Univerzity of Zilina. I am
trying to implement Kalman Filter into my school work. I have some problems
with understanding of R version of Kalman Filter in package stats( functions
KalmanLike, KalmanRun, KalmanSmooth,KalmanForecast).
1) Can you tell me how are you seting the initial values of state vector in
Kalman Filter? Are you using some method?
