mlocate-updatedb.timer not working?
I set this computer up with Centos 8 a few days ago. "systemctl status mlocate-updatedb.timer" says "Active (waiting)". But the mlocate database hasn't been updated since the last time I ran updatedb manually. # ls -l /var/lib/mlocate/* -rw-r-----. 1 root slocate 22944208 Feb 29 10:30 /var/lib/mlocate/mlocate.db What have I missed? -- MELVILLE THEATRE ~ Real D 3D

Permissions problem with mdbox maildir
Hi! Apologies if this has come up before, or if this is a duplicate posting (I tried posting before but I think it got lost). Anyways, I'm trying to set up an IMAP server with dovecot, and everything seems to be more or less working except that I periodically see error messages like this in my logs: Feb 18 01:01:15 stark dovecot: lmtp(31956, root at aleme.nu): Error:

how to restore deleted directory/files
Hi, Thanks for your reply. The file system type is xfs. And I found xfsdump/xfsrestore can undo the remove. I use dd to copy the partition as one image file. How do I mount the image as read-only device? Then I can try to recover the deleted files/directory anytime. Thanks! Encrypted File Storage
Anyone got any experience/suggestions for a way to store a directory of sensitive information on a CentOS box? This directory contains many scripts and output files, I need it backed up but not unencrypted and don't want to store it in a tar file type archive as when it needs to be accessed and have scripts executed/data generated, it needs to be untarred/unencrypted and I don't know the

Rsync tries to access unnecessary files/dirs after chrooting itself.
Hi. While debugging some encfs errors in the logs, I realized they are being generated because rsync (chrooted inside a encfs file system, --reverse) is trying to access files like: /root/.popt, /etc/localtime etc. This doesn't seem to be related to ID-name mapping as I already have numeric ids enabled in config. Here is the relevant strace output: [pid 25549] chroot("/chroot")

can XFS filesystem recover rm'ed files?
Yes, I rm'ed the wrong directory. The disk has not been written to since, now mounted ro. Is it possible to recover the files without doing forensics on the whole partition? I know the UID and path. XFS is supposed to be pretty amazing, can I get it to do this? Thanks, Dave

rsync and encryption
Hi, I have a small server at home. I like to put it 'online' and secure it as good as possible. The counterside of putting your personal backups on a server is that it might get hacked... and you don't want have to have your personal docs online... Do you think encryption is needed? How to use encryption with rsync? Thanks in advance, ~D

openssh-2.9p1
Hi, 1. I think you should apply the attached patch to openssh-2.9p1, otherwise ssh-keyscan on linux boxes with glibc-2.1 will experience enormous timeout delays. 2. Is there a program like ssh-keyscan for the Version2 (dsa and rsa) keys?? regards Peter Breitenlohner <peb at mppmu.mpg.de> -------------- next part -------------- diff -ur openssh-2.9p1.orig/ssh-keyscan.c

Badlock bad luck
Hello, I run a CentOS 6 machine with samba, serving approx. 150 Windows users with samba running as an NT-like PDC. After today's samba update (samba-3.6.23-30.el6_7.x86_64 etc.), nobody can log in. They all get the "Trust relationship failed" error message. If I downgrade: yum downgrade samba-common samba-winbind samba-winbind-clients samba-client samba samba-doc

Centos 5.1, mythtv, saa7134_dvb?
I'm trying to set up my Centos 5.1 box at home to run mythtv. The DVB-T card requires saa7134 and saa7134_dvb. These are not in the Centos kernels. Centosplus has saa7134, but not saa7134_dvb. Do I have to compile the kernel myself, or is there a trick? Mogens -- Mogens Kjaer, Carlsberg A/S, Computer Department Gamle Carlsberg Vej 10, DK-2500 Valby, Denmark Phone: +45 33 27 53 25, Fax:
