Boot disk order: h/w vs. grub
I'm still having conceptual trouble with this one. I have two PATA and two SATA disks in my home system. When the system comes up, these are, espectively, /dev/hda, /dev/hdb, /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. I have the boot order of the drives in the boot PROM set to boot from /dev/sda (hard drive 2), then /dev/hda (hd 0), and usually that works fine. /dev/sda is properly set up with the MBR and

CentOS 7 grub.cfg missing on new install
Greetings - The short story is that got my new install completed with the partitioning I wanted and using software raid, but after a reboot I ended up with a grub prompt, and do not appear to have a grub.cfg file. So here is a little history of how I got here, because I know in order for anyone to help me they would subsequently ask for this information. So this post is a little long, but

Strange slowdown occasionally in CentOS 5.0
For some reason, parts of my system are now slowing down to an agonizing crawl from time to time. At first it was my VMWare Server 1.04, which became such a pain that I rebooted. Then, it looked like it was a network-induced thing because the prime culprit was SeaMonkey, particularly with multiple tabs open. I did an ifdown and ifup on my NIC and that seemed to help for a while. But then it

Network problems on new CentOS 5 install on P35, ICH9R mobo
Had to replace dying cpu and mobo, so also replaced IDE with new SATA drive. Installed from latest ISO onto SATA and can't get networking to lease an IP address from my ISP (Comcast). The network utility always comes up with a private address (192.168.0.2) instead of Comcast IP. To add to confusion, if I boot into old IDE drive, I get proper network connection to internet, but lose my

Rsync slow with hard links
I am running rsync throuhg cygwin and trying to "mirror" two hard drives (hd1 -> hd2). HD1 have tons of hard links (I will say about 2 millions) because I do monthly backups and have about 13 folders and maybe about 150,000 files. Every month when I make a new snapshot I would also want to mirror HD1 to HD2. I tried running rsync -aH --progress -vv /cygdrive/d/ /cygdrive/e/ I though

smartd stalls the system on reboot
I have begun to notice that the smartd stalls my machine's boot process for as much as 2-3 minutes while it is coming up. I have the BIOS SMART function enabled, and I removed the bad SG400GB drive from the box yesterday, but I think this goes back farther than that. Why does it take so long? Is the BIOS SMART involved in this (and how)? Also, sendmail and sm-client take 30s-2m to come up

DVD Shrink - no DVD devices found
I am new to Wine and really struggling. I'm trying to get DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter running on my Kubuntu 5.04. My system is current. I have a 2.8Mhz machine with 1Gb memory and lots of space on my 160Gb hard drive. I have a Plextor DVD+-RW and an HP CD-RW. They are /dev/hdc and /dev/hdd respectively. Here is my /fstab file: # /etc/fstab: static file system information. # # <file

WINE fails in directories with Question Marks in name
Is there a way to tell WINE that question marks in directory names are okay? WINE fails whenever I ask it to access a file from within a directory with a question mark in its name. Specifically, my HTPC marks all commercials using WINE and Comskip. Whenever the schedule includes a tv show with a question mark in its title, WINE fails. Here are the logs that illustrate the failure. Script log

GRUB2 configuration for Xen 4 on Ubuntu Linux 10.04
Hello, I have installed the Xen 4.1.1 and a working kernel 2.6.32.43 which supports Xen on a Ubuntu Linux 10.04 LTS. However, I have never successfully booted the Hypervisor and Dom0. The screen is always black after some kernel messages rapidly go by. I think that I may pass the wrong parameters to the kernel or Hypervisor with GRUB2. Can any one share his/her working grub.cfg for GRUB2 with

CentOS 6.4 installation fails with message "No usable disks have been found"
Hi folks, I inherited a very old computer (I guess about 8 years old) which I'd like to use for some training on CentOS. I downloaded images for CentOS 6.4 i386 (DVD 1 and 2) and burned them onto discs. After inserting DVD 1 into drive and booting, on the "Welcome to CentOS 6.4!" screen I select "Install or upgrade an existing system". I then skip the media test and

Problems with SATA DVD+-RW drive [SOLVED]
On the system I'm testing with the CD-Rom drive is IDE but the softlink at /dev/cdrom points to the scsi device and that's not working with the automounter for some reason. Each time I reinstall I have to delete the soft link and recreate it pointing at /dev/hda instead. > -----Original Message----- > From: centos-bounces at centos.org > [mailto:centos-bounces at centos.org]

If I have a system with two disks, where device.map labels one as hd0 and the other as hd1, and I swap those numbers, the resulting boot sector will differ by one bit.

About I386 not fitting on one DVD
Just a thought If the I386 (or i686, never could figure out why the name change) disk doesn't quite fit on the DVD+, and needs a DVD-, this might put some folks at an inconvenience. I wonder if the difference between fitting and not fitting is small enough, so that some amount of pruning might make it fit on the DVD+R image. Some ways to prune could be: a) Create two versions of the

Hi messmer, seems that anaconda supports partitioned RAID devices. Disk selection see one mdraid device and permits to create partition on it.
