buying the right cpu fan
(I sent this yesterday but it never made it through)
I've got a remote system where I think I need to replace the CPU fan.
in the output of dmidecode, I get...

Checking fan state
I just replaced my fan in my nc2400. It was a 5hour job. Had to pull
EVERYTHING to get to where they have the fan in the thing.
Now I want to know if it is working. It is suppose to be
thermostatically controlled, and it takes time to heat up.
So how can I find out what Centos knows about the system temp and fan state?
It was hard to tell if I put the connector in the right way. At least

RAIDs and JBOD?
Hey Guys,
I have some questions?regarding?a new home server I am going to build
in the hopefully very near future (ASAP, I just need to finish
planning everything and this is the penultimate?hurdle), I will be
creating a software RAID...
Lets say I have three drives "knocking" around which are all 1TB SATA
II drives but each made by a different manufacturer. I am going to
guess that

Hi CentOS users
I have here old CentOS 2.1 server on IBM Xseries 336. How to see

It seems that "dmidecode" is not available for CentOS 2.1

dmidecode doesn't work under xen 4.1.1 on certain hardware
I have a xen 4.1.1 with a 3.0.4 linux kernel running on a Supermicro
Supermicro X8DTL-iF motherboard with 16GB of RAM.
If I run the 3.0.4 kernel on the bare metal dmidecode works fine. If I
run it under xen dmidecode fails to work. On other systems with
different hardware but identical software dmidecode works correctly
under xen. On this hardware with xen 3.4.1 & linux 2.6.18, dmidecode

Kernel:[Hardware Error]: use of vacuum

It's a good idea, especially in low-humidity climates. Also noteworthy:
the air moving through a hose can cause a vacuum's hose or attachment to
build up a static charge, which is another reason it can be a bad idea
to use a vacuum in a computer.

SATA hotswap
Hi all,
I changed a bad disk (automaticly disabled from software raid1 and system
for I/O error) in one of our servers and now have problem with adding new
one to system without reboot. Does anybody have an experience with this? Or
is it possible? :) We're using hotswap AXX6DRV3G for 6 SATA disks from Intel
connected directly to MB (S5520HC from Intel too). There is AHCI as driver

How to determine 64 vs 32 bit processor
I have been tied up with other work and Holidays. Now back to some
server work that is long overdue. I lost an old server yesterday so it
is crunch time.
I believe my new platform is suppose to be an x86_64. The order form
says 64 bit.
I booted Centos 6.3 i386 liveCD to check the system out before an install.
uname -i
reports i386
dmidecode -t processor
reports Characteristics of 64

Expanding Facter's manufacturer.rb
I''ve just filed http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/ticket/1182 with
the aim of making it easier to add fact pickup from dmidecode in
manufacturer.rb.
As the ticket says, I think that the fact sections, keys and values
shouldn''t be hardcoded in manufacturer.rb, but should be stored in a
configuration file somewhere. This means that a given stable
installation of Puppet can be

Extract DMI info when running PXELINUX
Hi all
Is there any way to extract information (like what dmidecode provides)
from within PXELINUX and, based on this information, selectively perform
an action?
What I'm trying to do is provide a method of flashing the BIOS of our HP
Linux workstations but different workstations use different methods of
updating the BIOSes. For example, the xw9300 uses 'rompaq' where the

A400P + Intel D201GLY2(A) motherboard?
Hello
I'd like to build myself an Asterisk server for SOHO use. Intel's
D201GLY2 motherboard (http://tinyurl.com/ddarzp) looks like a very
good deal, but I'm concerned about two things:
1. Will an A400P (from OpenVox, but supposed to be Digium-compatible
http://tinyurl.com/ck6nfu) fit with a PCI riser, or will the CPU
heatsink/fan be in the way? I downloaded the PDF from

dmidecode Output
Hey Y'all,
How much can I trust the output of dmidecode?
The manual that came with my MB says that my MB can support up to 2 Gb
of DDR2 RAM. dmidecode seems tell me that I can load up to 8 Gb on this MB.
As 4 Gb DDR2 sticks cost about $100 each I figured maybe I should ask,
what's the chances that I can plug in two 4 Gb sticks in this machine
and actually have it work?

Centos on Dell XPS15
I have a Dell XPS 13 9360, though I am running ubuntu 18.04 on it.? I
remember there being a patch to the mainline kernel which addressed many
of the wireless problems. I'm not sure if those changes ever made it
into the CentOS kernels.
Some of the Dell XPS 13's had removable ethernet interfaces while most
of the more recent ones had the killer interfaces on the motherboard.?
I'm not
