Boot CentOS 5 to command line
Hi fellows,
Pretty new to CentOS.
I was trying to find a way to boot CentOS into command prompt instead of GUI
(or without loading any services).
Tried using 'Crl+Alt+F1' at the boot process, but, that holds the screen at
mounting and doing fstab and doesn't proceed further.
Is there anyother way to boot CentOS into command prompt without using
Rescue option from the installation CD?

Lies wide open ...!
Being as a Windows geek tho, I consider Linux as a more powerful server
operating system than Windows. When I saw OS comparison at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver/compare/linux/server-security.mspx I
was shocked! Showed it to a friend and he felt like being brainwashed :D
lol.
What do you fellows think about this?
Thanks.

Is there a way to save the routing table permanently?
I'm adding the default gateway to the route through "route add default gw
10.10.10.10" which is also shown in "route -n" but the problem is that as
soon as I restart the network through /etc/init.d/network restart; the route
sets to default one...!
SO, my question is there any way to save the modified route permanently by
hardcoding the changes?
Thanks.

CentOS 5.0 /proc Backup/Restore
Hi,
I've recently switched to CentOS 5.0 from RedHat 9.0 and found a new
directory /proc which contains "virtual" files according to the docs.
When I try to run my normal backup which uses cpio to create archives,
it complains about not being able to access many files in the /proc
directory. This is also true of some files in /sys/devices.
Searching for something that

Full server restore-point image
Hi,
After some months of configuring and testing a small server, think
that would be nice to make a full server restore-point image in order
to recover it if something goes wrong in the future, just restoring
the image back and not making the full install and configure process
all over again. The server uses Logical Volumes.
I was thinking on using the CentOS LiveCD and then use dd command to

OT - backup question/advice
Hello,
I have been using mondorescue to backup to dvd for several months now
without any problems.
Since upgrading to Centos 4.4, I now receive a few errors. The errors are
for files in /var/named/chroot/proc. I guess these files change so when I
do a differntial backup they aren't there and result in errors. (Never got
any errors before and I think these files were there in 4.3) If I

Where is cached memory going?
As by the time, I've learned that Linux works by caching apps by using a lot
of RAM and then it reallocates the new stuff by cleaning the old cached
pages from memory as compared to other OSs. With 2 gigs of RAM often I see
the free memory only as 100-400MB. Using TOP or PS, it doesn't look like any
program or process is using excessive memory (the highest process is seen
with 1-2% total

How to recognize an MBR suitable for isohybrid --mac ?
Hi,
i have implemented in xorriso the equivalents of isohybrid.c options --mac
and --uefi. There remains the question how to ensure that the submitted
MBR is prepared for the 32 byte mock-up of an APM Block0.
I see in git of may 2012 that all mbr/isohdp[fp]x*.bin begin by

restoring system
I have restored my home directory in the past using rsync but never the
entire system. If I rsync / (on my usb drive containing the backup) to /
on the computer with a fresh install of the OS, what problems will I run
into? What about links? I am presently triple booting 3 linux distros and
want to delete one to install something else. The distro I'm installing
will be on 3 partitions (/,

PXE/NFS looks for CDROM when starting a recovery
Hello all!
I try mondo/mindi for some days now but it does not
work and I don't know the reason.
It is an intel Suse-8.0 Client and I use the Suse-8.0
packages from ftp.mondorescue.org.
dhcp and tftp work fine. mondoarchive works, but I
don't find any initrd.img for pxe/nfs. All initrd
I have found ask for a CDROM and as they cannot
find any they ask for a floppy when starting the

SMB server with CentOS 4
Hi,
I need to set up a small server for a group of ~10 employees (all using
Windows 2000/XP, used to use a windows 2000/exchange setup). I have a
linux server already running CentOS 4, so I'd like to do all I can with
this. I thought about using Samba for file/print sharing and
OpenXchange (commercial version) to have a nice
collaborative/mail/calendar/etc server. Of course, it would

problem booting (Fedora) LiveCD ISO over PXELINUX
This is an issue I've researched quite a bit on bug lists, and looked
in the Syslinux Wiki for a way to do this, but haven't yet found a
solution.
1) I have an existing Fedora 13 LiveCD which I burned to a CD and
tested on a system without issue.
2) I then took that same ISO and dropped it in my pxelinux.cfg/default
for being able to boot over the network. I made sure to extract the

[PATCH] edit-livecd in python
This is the second generation of the edit-livecd tool that replaces our
original bash script with a python version and aims to reuse as much as
the livecd-creator libraries as possible. The main reason for the new
creator class is to avoid the need for a kisckstart file in order to
edit an existing livecd image.
edit-livecd is useful for people who don't have the development and yum
