Zil on multiple usb keys
This might be a stupid question, but here goes... Would adding, say, 4 4 or 8gb usb keys as a zil make enough of a difference for writes on an iscsi shared vol? I am finding reads are not too bad (40is mb/s over gige on 2 500gb drives stripped) but writes top out at about 10 and drop a lot lower... If I where to add a couple usb keys for zil, would it make a difference? Thanks. Sent from a

CentOS 5 grub boot problem
I am trying to upgrade my system from 500GB drives to 1TB. I was able to partition and sync the raid devices, but I cannot get the new drive to boot. This is an old system with only IDE ports. There is an added Highpoint raid card which is used only for the two extra IDE ports. I have upgraded it with a 1TB SATA drive and an IDE-SATA adapter. I did not have any problems with the system

Migrating to RAID
I have CentOS 4.x installed on a single 500GB SATA drive. Drive is about 10 percent used. I would like to migrate to software RAID 5 without reinstalling the OS. Was thinking 3 500GB drives. Is that possible or must I reinstall? Matt

6 disk raidz2 or 3 stripe 2 way mirror
I''m playing around with ZFS and want to figure out the best use of my 6x 300GB SATA drives. The purpose of the drives is to store all of my data at home (video, photos, music, etc). I''m debating between: 6x 300GB disks in a single raidz2 pool --or-- 2x (3x 300GB disks in a pool) mirrored I''ve read up a lot on ZFS, but I can''t really figure out which is

Hardware performance question : Disk RPM speed & Xen Performance
Hello, I am a relatively new user of Xen virtualization, so you''ll have to forgive the simplistic nature of my question. I have a Dell R410 poweredge server (dual quad core CPUs + 32gb ram). I plan on utilizing this server with Xen. The ''dilemma'' I am having is whether or not to replace the 2x 500gb 7.2K RPM drives that came with the server with faster 300gb

logical volume and drive names after mirroring a centos installation via rsync
I have a working CentOS5 installation on server A's first SATA drive (sda). I had an empty SATA drive on that server (sdb). I was asked to mirror the installation of server B (installed on first SATA drive, sda), also running CentOS5, to the second drive (sdb) of server A. I am unsure what should be done after mirroring to get the new system boot. What I have done already: - On server

Errors on an SSD drive
what file system are you using?? ssd drives have different characteristics that need to be accomadated (including a relatively slow write process which is obvious as soon as the buffer is full), and never, never put a swap partition on it, the high activity will wear it out rather quickly.? might also check cables, often a problem particularly if they are older sata cables being run at a possibly

7.1, mpt and slow writes
Hello, I think this needs a few more eyes: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-scsi/2009-January/003782.html In short, writes are slow, likely do to the write-cache being enabled on the controller. The sysctl used in 6.x to turn the cache off don't seem to be in 7.x. Thanks, Charles ___ Charles Sprickman NetEng/SysAdmin Bway.net - New York's Best Internet - www.bway.net

Disaster recovery recommendations
Greetings, I have three drives; they are all SATA Seagate Barracudas; two are 500GB; the third is a 2TB. I don't have a clear reason why they have failed (possibly due to a deep, off-brand, flakey mobo; but it's still inconclusive, but I would like to find a disaster recovery service that can hopefully recover the data. Much thanks for any and all suggestions, Max Pyziur pyz at

Trying to boot a SSD of 500GB
Hi, I have a custom linux system that runs off a FAT32 usb flash disk. I use syslinux to make it bootable and load the kernel. I'm trying to boot now from a SSD SATA disk (500GB) but it's not working and I can't figure out why. BIOS show that no bootable disk were found. What I already tried (linux fdisk): 1- Creating a new DOS partition table on the SSD, a FAT32 (type b), and

DMA disabled on SATA disk with Core Duo/i955 machine (Inspiron 6400)
I am trying to use CentOS 4 on this machine and it does not allow me to set DMA to 1, it just says that it is not possible. I have tried updating to the latest release and it still won't work. I have searched for it on Google and there is a thread mentioning the same machine and CentOS, but none of the solutions (-p, -X 12) seem to work at all and there is no "it works!!!!!"

settings up cheap a NAS / SAN server, is it possible?
Hi all I want to look at setting up a simple / cheap SAN / NAS server using normal PIV motherboard, 2GB (or even more) RAM, Core 2 Duo CPU (probably a Intel 6700 / 6750 / 6800) & some SATA HDD's (4 or 6x 320GB - 750GB). My budget is limited, so I can't afford a pre-built NAS device. Can this be done with CentOS? I've been looking FreeNAS (which is built on FreeBSD), and it

re: 120 GB larger hard disk
Hi, I donĀ“t think that this is a ext3 Problem, since you have problems partitioning that disk. Perhaps a hdparm -i /dev/hdX could shine some light on this, also a fdisk -l /dev/hdX could be useful. For now - let me guess: <guess> To me, it seems, that the disk is clipped to 32GB, perhaps the mainboard bios can not cope with a disk >32GB - just a thought. Since the manufactorer

Asymmetric mirroring
Hello everyone, I''m wondering if the following makes sense: To configure a system for high IOPS, I want to have a zpool of 15K RPM SAS drives. For high IOPS, I believe it is best to let ZFS stripe them, instead of doing a raidz1 across them. Therefore, I would like to mirror the drives for reliability. Now, I''m wondering if I can get away with using a large capacity 7200

I mounted the dvd image in the same directory and started watching the

Has the ST3750640AS Segate 750 GB sata drive been tried with ZFS yet ?
