Tape operation
Hi all,
My only encounter with tape-backup was with Windows 2000. With it, when we
backup things using windows' backup tool, it will create a 'catalog', then
the catalog contains all the backup operations we do based on date. So, with
this we can "append" many backups into one tape. Next time we want to restore
a backup, we can choose what date available in that

Tape drive recommendations
Hello all.
I have 15 or so CentOS servers (now v4.4, I will upgrade them all to
5 when it comes out) and a few windows machines. I am looking to
implement a network backup solution using Amanda.
I will be backing up 200 gig or so to start, but that will grow.
Does anyone have any recommendations on tape drives that will work
"out of the box" with CentOS?
Thanks,
Joe

I have been using amanda backup for quite a long time now. I'm busy migrating some older hosts to

amanda and selinux
Anyone familiar with the selinux policy for the
amanda backup software package? I'm getting lots
of data not being backed up. For example, under
/home there are 2 directory trees owned by root.
Those get backed up, user home dirs do not.
No AVC denials nor messages in /var/log/messages
or journalctl log. But if I turn off selinux
enforcing, or set amanda_t type to permissive,

Amanda 2.3.0.5-Samba 1.9.16p11 PC backups...
At the bottom is what I got returned from AMANDA 2.3.0.5 after patching
Samba 1.9.16p11 to give estimates. Any idea what I might not have done yet?
My disklist reads:
shokk \\thor\depot nocomp-user-gnutar
To connect successfully to that server with smbclient, I have to do this,
giving the same password that I now have in /etc/amandapass:
smbclient \\\\THOR\\DEPOT -U BACKUP

The attached patch for SAMBA fixes this problem, preventing log

amanda backup ssh key
hello list,
I am attempting to ssh via a user account setup for amanda backups
from the backup server to the test backup client. AFAIK everything is
setup correctly yet when I ssh as the user to the client I have to
type the password. the public key is in the authorized_keys file of
the client and permissions all seem correct.
Here is a verbose output of the ssh session

Smba with Amanda backup --- permissions
Hi,
I am trying to create a Samba share on /media/winshare with the owner as
amandabackup instead of root. But as soon as I mount the Samba share on to
the mount point, the permissions for the owner get reverted back to root
instead of amandabackup.
Attaching a snapshot of how it looks like.

Would anyone have any ideas with smbclient sits at FUTEX_WAIT in below

Typing:

Still considering backup utilities
I hear that backuppc does *not* have a native *Doze client. On the other
hand, I know amanda's been around a long time, and it does. Opinions on
amanda, folks?

Amanda and Samba 2.0.3
Hi Folks,
I want to use samba and amanda to backup NT/win file system. I downloaded
the latest version of Samba and trying to install on bsdi4.0 and it
complains that the OS is a "trapdoor" OS and will not work propperly. I
installed it anyway and I can connect to NT no problem but when I connect
it back to the unix box, it complains about "Bad password - name/password

smbclient (1.9.18p3) dies or needs killing when used for backups (via Amanda)
Has anyone noticed that there appears to be a few
problems with regards to Samba and in particular the
usage of smbclient, which can do one of the following :
1) Complete & udder death of the NT networking subsystem
(which requires a reboot to cure)
2) smbclient appears to lose its connection with the
host being contacted and eventually needs to be
   killed.
I'm not too sure how

Backup PC or other solution
I list,
I'm new with backup ops and I'm searching a good system to accomplish this
work. I know that on centos there are bacula and amanda but they are too
tape oriented. Another is that they are very powerfull but more complex. I
need a solution for small office for disk storage and I found Backup PC.
Many people say that it is great for small stuff and for great number of
data.

Is Amanda "vaulting" what I need for archiving data?
Hi folks,
I've got a bit of a different scenario than I imagine most, and have spent
the last 60 or 90 minutes searching Amanda list archives and googling, but
did not come up with anything much. Then I went browsing around the
Amanda website and found "vaulting" and was wondering whether this would
suit my needs.
I'm basically searching around for a backup solution and

Incremental backups?
So I thought I'd get a head start for next week -
I have a low-power Linux box that has a few samba shares mounted, and
limited hard disk space. This box is connected to a tape library via
SCSI card.
I want to find the best way to create a full, then incremental backup of
the samba mounts, directly to tape. Some of the samba mounts are
appliances that cannot run any special
