Centos 5.1
I'm about to try Centos 5 (first time user). Question: I have the 5.0 CD-ROMs, so can I install with them and them update to 5.1 via the internet, or should I use the 5.1 CDs? Thanks. -Tom Tom Browder Niceville, Florida USA

Centos 5 - Install Hangup
I get to where the installation begins copying packages to the new host and it's time to change CD's to the second one. I get the following message: An error occurred unmounting the CD... make sure you're not accessing /mnt/source from the shell on tty2...click Ok to retry. I click and nothing changes. I go to tty2 and see the #ssh prompt and see nothing interfering (and the

Disabling user switching in CentOS 6
Installing CentOS 6 on a lab full of workstations, and I want to disable fast user switching. With CentOS 5, I simply made sure that the "user_switch_enabled" entry in /etc/gconf/schemas/gnome-screensaver.schemas was set to false. However, that doesn't work with CentOS 6. I've found various proposed solutions to this issue, such as gconftool-2 --direct --config-source

Video Card
I want to be able to use a late-model video card with either Nvidia or ATI (AMD) chips that have the capability to use the GPU for numeric processing through the CUDA or AMD Stream SDKs. I can't find any good source for hardware that really works under Linux, not to speak of Centos. I need a specific model and brand that a user has successfully been able to use the proprietary driver for

Video Card [SOLVED]
A recap of the problems for my configuration: Centos 5.2, x86_64, PNY 9600 GT 512 Mb video, Rosewill R913J 19" LCD monitor, Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L mobo, Intel Core 2 Duo, 8 Gb RAM. Using the latest Nvidia x86_64 driver package (177.82) I could not get the 1280x1060 resolution (I could get nothing but 640x480). Additionally, while attempting various fixes, the monitor base color turned blue.

How to disable screen locking system-wide?
By default, CentOS v5 requires a user's password when the system wakes up from the screensaver. This can be disabled by each user, but how can I disable this system-wide? Many of my users forget to do this, which results in workstations being locked up. Bob

setting up auto logout in CentOS 6
I would like to have my lab workstations logout a session after the person has been idle for a certain period of time. After some searching on the web, I got into /etc/gconf/schemas/gnome-session.schemas and set the default value of max_idle_action to ?forced-logout?: <schema> <key>/schemas/desktop/gnome/session/max_idle_action</key>

CentOS Bug Reporting Policy
I'm a little confused about what you are supposed to do when you discover a bug with CentOS (and by implication RHEL). Is there some policy as to what to do and where to report the bug? It doesn't seem appropriate to report it to http://bugs.centos.org because CentOS is kept in-sync with the upstream, so bugs will never get fixed in CentOS, only in the upstream distribution. Unless

Does sprof work on CentOS5?
No matter how I try, I can't seem to get a library profile from sprof on CentOS5. Does anyone know if sprof actually works on CentOS5? I'd be very interested to hear if anyone is using it successfully. At the moment I'm trying something like this to get the dump: LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. LD_PROFILE=libmy.so ./mymain where libmy.so is the library I want to profile, and mymain is the

Is oprofile still working?
Hi all, Is anyone using oprofile? I'm getting segfaults from opreport at the moment, and I'm not sure if it is opreport, or just me. In case it is something just plain daft I am doing, here is how it goes: opcontrol --reset opcontrol --setup --no-vmlinux opcontrol --start ... now I run my program, /tmp/myprog ... opcontrol --dump opcontrol --shutdown then I run, opreport -l

gconftool
I am using gconftool to set a number of parameters up automatically... However, the one parameter I cannot find is under root you should be able to set the "automatic login" on first boot up. This found under "Applications", "System settings", "Login screen", then automatic login. Can someone point me to that setting? THanks, Jerry

metacity theme opacity
I pushed out some changes to gwd that makes it possible to properly set an overall opacity value for any metacity theme. Making the complete decorations translucent can look bad with some themes. However, I've made it possible to have the opacity fade from opaque to the selected opacity value in a similar way to how the built-in decorations look. This usually looks a lot better. I'll add
