unconfig'ing a machine
The sys-unconfig script does not really work as advertised. For one thing
it doesn't change the hostname.
Is there an documentation about how to do the following:
- Change the hostname, IP, networking etc for a currently networked machine
- Change the hostname, IP, networking etc for a currently non-networked machine
- Turn a networked machine into a non-networked machine.

Diagnosing random hangs
I have many different centos machines that are hanging
regulary. I believe this is due to something our application
is doing - not a centos specific problem.
When the machines hang, there is no access to the console
or remote access(ssh, rsh, etc).
Any tips on debugging this issue? It is becoming quite a
show stopper as we migrate our product from Solaris to
Linux.

rpm dependency question
I have an rpm I've created that has a dependency on a
library provided by a third party. This dependency is
not specified anywhere in my spec file yet the package seems
to know about when I run:
# rpm -qip --requires MyPackage.rpm
The third party rpm is installed and uninstalled via a
vendor-supplied script so that they can prompt you to accept
licenses and so on. Problem is, the vendor

detecting boot order
Given that I have a machine with possibly multiple disks, each of
which is bootable(has an MBR)....
Is there a command that will query the BIOS and tell me which disk
is the default boot disk. BTW - this is x86.
The goal is to remotely reboot the workstation into the desired
disk(which contain different centos versions).

CentOS fileserver migrating to ZFS appliance
Hey folks,
I've got a CentOS / RHEL (5.x) environment and am in the process of
migrating the 5.3 file server over to an Oracle/Sun 7120 appliance.
I want to keep my main 5.3 server as our NIS server but am moving NFS
and Samba functions over to the appliance.
NFS was a no brainer as one can imagine. Samba seems a bit trickier
because of the authentication requirements in the ZFS server.

nautilus pegging the cpu
I have a user that is running centos on
many machines. At each machine, the users is logged
into a common account that is located elsewhere on the network.
Meaning that everyone is logged on as user_x and accessing
the home directory via NFS.
All users are running gnome. On some of the machines, the nautilus
process is pegging the cpu. At this time, I have no strace or other

server renaming problems
Good Morning,
I have a Sun E220R I am building as a replacement for an Ultra2.
The OS is Solaris 2.7, samba version is 2.2.2.
As a test box I named the E220R 'tiamat'. The older U2 is 'terra'.
Tiamat had samba running happily on it.
Last night I tested the switch over by using /usr/sbin/sys-unconfig on
tiamat. This strips the system id, hostname, IP address. I then

XP Clients, Netbios aliases and msdfs
Greetings list,
I've looked high and low, and cannot find an instance of this
particular situation, and thought I might try leveraging the power of
the collective hive mind of the user community to solve this problem.
My setup is likely not at all common. I've created a bunch of
netbios aliases on a single linux box. Each alias has the same name as a
particular windows group, like hr

New PTR records not visible
Hello Lois,
thanks for looking into this. Have you looked at what the original
poster shared in the bug report?
https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14268
I don't have a big problem with this, just trying to help. Maybe the
original poster can say more with regards of the problem he has with this.
here are more of my details.

Bonding Eth interfaces - unexpeceted results
CentOS 6.2.........
Why do the physical interfaces report (correctly) that they're negotiated at 1000Mb/s, but when I `cat /proc/net/bonding/bond0` I get 100Mbps for the member interfaces, and when I ` mii-tool bond0` I get 10Mbps for the bond?

New PTR records not visible
Yet that still does not explain why the PTR record I create for that IP
does not become visible. I can create other PTR records in the same zone
and they do become visible to DNS lookups. I suspect it has something to
do with half-dead entries in the database that are blocking it...
Thanks for looking into this,
Christian

CentOS 3.5 system hanging
Our very large and very complex application is running on
CentOS 3.5 and Solaris. The CentOS machines are hanging
about once per day. By "hanging" I mean the system is
completely unresponsive either from the console or remotely
via ssh. Totally locked.
Does anyone have any tips for troubleshooting this sort
of problem?
