Need tip on an inexpensive printer for college student using CentOS 5.5
Sending my son back to college with a dual-boot laptop with Win 7 and
CentOS 5.5. He uses Win7 to manage his iPod and SW that sometimes
issued by a professor for a specific course...otherwise he uses CentOS
for everything else. That setup worked well last year, except for
printing. He has a low-end Cannon printer that is not supported in the
Linux realm.
Most of his coursework was uploaded to

HP vs. Brother Printers: Use with Centos/Fedora
We currently have a Brother MFC-5490CN. Printer firmware is dated June 1010. (yeah, 10 years old). Few years ago the brother software
wouldn't work for printing under Fedora. No problem, can print under Windows 10. Then it stopped scanning. Could still print...under
Windows.
Now, to fix the scanning features working I installed updated drivers under Windows, now it scans like champ, but

getting rid of hp c3180
I have a hp photosmart C3180 all-in-one and am well and truly sick of it.
It seems like every time I go on another printing binge,
I need yet another print cartridge.
hp-clean doesn't help.
IIRC this use it or lose it "feature" is common to inkjets.
What should I replace it with?
If I want a non-cloggging printer,
is laser jet the way I need to go?
I'd like to do color

cheep laser printer recomendations
Hi!
I would like to hear what printers go good w/our operating system.
While back, I should have checked w/y'all like I'm doing now but I just
went ahead and bought a Konica-Minolta PagePro 1350W. Now that W at the
end of 1350 is a huge word that means WINDOWS! grrrr! It's a great
printer 21pgs/min etc but it doesn't like linux at all and their tech
spt will tell you as much. I

Sharing a USB Printer
We're trying to share an Epson USB inkjet printer via Samba 3.0.2-7 on our new
Fedora server.
The share is set up OK, and can be seen and opened from Windows clients. However,
although the Fedora box can print to the Epson, the Windows boxes can't.
All other Samba shares, including a laser printer connected to the parallel port,
work fine.
Does anyone have a clue how to fix this?

SOHO colour laser printer recommendations
Hi List,
I'd really appreciate some recommendations for colour laser printers for
use with CentOS. It's for light home use with CentOS 5 and CentOS 6 systems.
Must have:
1. Colour. Quality not that important as mainly for kids school project
type of stuff.
2. Ethernet connectivity - want something I can plug into the network
3. Cheap running costs - don't want to be spending a

Problems with CUPS and a networked epson printer
I have an Epson Stylus Color 880, connected to our network via an
external ethernet printserver. I used to run lprng on the samba server
(which is a domain controller), and the Windows clients had one minor
problem accessing this printer via Samba (2.2.3a, then): Every time a
client wanted to print, the Epson status monitor on the client would
complain about communication problems with the

Hello:
I've configured a Linux box with Samba to act as a secondary domain
controller for an existing NT server. I've gotten everything working very
nicely, all my file shares set up, etc.
I've got 6 printers that I need to set up as print shares. The ones that
speak Postscript or PCL were very easy to set up, and work admirably.

Setting up a printer without having one
Hi folks! :-)
I am supposed to configure this fresh install of CentOS 5.5 to work
nicely with the HP 1010 printer, once it gets connected to the
computer (probably via usb, but I cannot be sure). The problem is that
I will not be anywhere near the machine when the printer actually gets
plugged in, and hp-setup refuses to do anything until that happens.
So how does one configure a

Wireless Printing
My home network doesn't have any wireless access points (to slow) and
I was iSCSI booting my wkst for a while:) Now I need to setup a printer
so I was going to get an HP Photosmart C4580.
The HPLIP page shows no network support:( I _was_ going to use a USB
wireless nic I have and setup an ad-hoc to print to this thing.
Anyone know anything that might make this work?
Thanks!

using printer on linux from windows
I am at my wits end.
I have a brother hl1440 laser which I have working with Linux under
cups, but I cannot get it working with samba and seen by a Windows XP
system. I already have disk shares working properly. The printers name
under cups is 1440. I want it's Windows printing to be done by the
Windows driver.
All the docs I have found online all seem to assume you already are a

2.2.3a printing problems: no printing from Word, spools taking up all CPU on clients
I'm running Samba-2.2.3a plus the printer defaults patch (samba-2.2.3a-5mdk
rpm) on a Linux 2.4.(Mandrake 8.X). This server has been upgraded from
2.2.3, from 2.2.2, which was upgraded from 2.2.1. Everything was working
with the same printer configuration at version 2.2.2 and 2.2.1 (although I
have moved the WINS server from a new machine since then).
The server is a PDC/WINS server, and

my last two laser printers have been Brother black&white all-in-ones
("MFC"). *VERY* cheap per page printing costs, even if you use Brother
brand toner

Canon PIXMA mg5420 or HP Photo Smart 7520
In need of a new printer, having done a bit or research, and considering
either the Canon PIXMA mg5420 or the HP Photo Smart 7520.
There are Linux drivers for the Photosmart which are supposed to handle
both the printer and the scanner. But in my research I haven't found
(yet) anyone who's gotten the scanner to work with Linux on the
Photosmart, let alone the sheet feeder for it.
