booting usb stick
Hi all, I have been trying to get a usb stick 8G to boot centos. I am as far a it boots and hangs at "Switching to new root". I take the same USB stick and put it another PC and it boots fine. What might I look for as to why the machine hangs at switching to new root? Of course the machines are different. The one that does not boot is an ebox 2300sx and the one that does boot is an

Low-memory Centos5?
Good morning, I've inherited an old laptop from my wife that I'd like to use when I travel (it's fairly small with a 12" screen). The bad part is that it is maxed out on memory with 384MB. Has anyone played with using Centos5 on systems with little memory? Ideally, I don't need too much - Firefox, Openoffice, a little Perl/Python/C here and there. I was thinking about using

Installing RWeka package in CentOS 5: problems with JAVA?
Hi, I am a R user, with some experience in MacOS, Linux, etc, but I am having a problem that I cannot solve: I have a linux server (CentOS 5) and I installed sun jdk1.6. For instance: $ java -version Java version "1.6.0_10-rc2" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_10-rc2-b32) Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 11.0-b15, mixed mode) I also installed the latest version of R:

what is the magic needed from upgrading from 1.4 to 1.6
I am upgrading a box from 1.4 to 1.6 and my console/dsp stopped working. I am getting a SIP/401 Unauthorized error and then a SIP/404 error. I changed nothing in the configs. Is there a particular parameter needed for 1.6 that 1.4 did not care about? If I drop back to 1.4 it starts working again. Thanks Jerry

Frequent Gnome Terminal crashes in CentOS 5.1
Ever since I upgraded all my systems to CentOS 5.1 I have been getting reports from users about "all their windows disappearing". A little digging revealed that they meant all gnome-terminal windows. Since there is only one gnome-terminal process by default for all your open terminal windows and tabs, a crash of that process means losing all your terminal windows. These

centos 4.6 - 586 install - how to get that to a 486 level if possible
Is there a method to get a 586 (i586 text) install to a 486 level? I am looking for information guidance on this. I have looked into using debian/386 which stinks in my opinion, slackware doesnt quite have it either. So I am wishing/hoping there is a NOT TO painful way to get a 586 install to run on a 486 chip. I have been searching but havent found anything useful. If anyone knows what might

kernel compile for i586
I created a i586 install image with qemu. I downloaded the SRPMS package for the kernel and installed it. I cd /usr/src/redhat/SPECS rpmbuild -bp --target i586 kernelXXX.spec I does a bunch of things but it did not build a new kernel and put it in /boot I think I am missing a command to actually BUILD the kernel. What is it? Thanks, Jerry

General CentOS 5.1 (or Gnome) instability?
I've been a big fan of CentOS for a while, and didn't have many issues with CentOS 4.X over the past few years. However, since moving to CentOS 5.1 a few weeks ago, I have received more problem reports from my users than in the last year and a half on CentOS 4.X. I've previously reported the problem with gnome-terminal crashing (and since there is a single gnome-terminal

Via C3 and CentOS5
Hi, I have an Asus terminator C3 with 512Mb. It has a Via P3-800Mhz CPU, with a VIA chipset. It's currently running FC6. I wanted to wipe the machine and install CentOS5. It boots from the CD to the linux prompt, then it fully loads vmlinux, then starts initrd.img, and somewhere at that point it reboots. I have tried: noapic, noapm, noprobe. Same, somewhere during initrd.img or at then

CentOS 5.2 kernel [2.6.18-92.1.1.el5] crashes on dual-PIII Compaq ProLiant 3000
After yum upgrade, the new CentOS5 kernel [ kernel-2.6.18-92.1.1.el5.i686 ] crashes each time early in boot process on Compaq ProLiant 3000 with dual Pentium3 CPU (600 MHz, CPU0: Intel Pentium III (Katmai) stepping 03, CPU1 the same). I get kernel panic at powernowk8_init+0x05e/0x1c3. The previous kernel [ kernel-2.6.18-53.1.21.el5.i686 ] seems to work fine. I am wondering if anyone has met

Slow DNS lookups on CentOS6
Most of my desktops are still running CentOS5, but I have installed CentOS6 on a few of them. The users on those desktops are reporting that DNS lookups are slow, and from my brief tests, that does appear to be the case. After some googling, I found a suggestion to disable IPv6, but that didn't help. So I tried to figure out where the delay occurs using strace and ltrace, but that

[ Sorry for the very belated response ] Thanks, Tru. What is the process for Sean's work to make it into the standard CentOS5 and 5.1 repositories? How will the tools package get updated as you patch the kernel? Perhaps we should cc Sean on the email? His home page on the Duke server has no contact information. Thanks, Andrew [ Resent to the centos-virt email list, as recommended by
