Can not register W2K computer (WXP and W98 without problems)
I can NOT have a W2KPro computer to reconnect to a RH9 Samba PDC server
domain after initial "registration". (I don't have any problems with WXPPro)
NetBios name of the W2KPro computer: PRUEBA
RH9 PDC Samba domain name: SAMBA
When "registering" the W2KPro computer to the domain for the first time,
everything seems to work fine (even though it takes longer than usual to

Hi,
With WXP it's fine but with W98 or NT I don't see services.

Round 2 - Guest Share on WXP Host
Thanks to everyone who has tried to help so far. Not quite there but I
think I'm close. For anyone new, it's a private 2 comp network (RH9 and
WXP) so I just want the simplest guest access possible.
This is my current smb.conf file:
[global]
workgroup = SAMBA
encrypt passwords = yes
smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd
security = share

OT - Windows slowdown?
I know this isn't the right forum for this (do I ever!), but you-all know so
much about everything I thought I'd ask.
About two months ago I resurrected my daughter's Compaq laptop (cracked
screen - replaced it) and ran an update on it. It's running Windows XP, SP1
(I think), but since the update it has run about 1/3 as fast as it used to.
Does anyone know if there was a WXP

Time to sync (NOT a complaint)
Is anyone else seeing this situation?
I subscribe to the announce digest, and for the last four or five
announcements that contained updates to CentOS 5, I've been unable to
get a successful run of yum update for as much as 24 hours after the
announcement. The last time around, I tried at about 5 hours after
the posting, and yum couldn't see anything. I ran yum clean all, and
yum update

booting w98 bootdisk via memdisk
Hallo,
I try to boot the windows 98 bootdisk via memdisk. It doesn't work
completely.
Booting a freedos FD image works, booting the windows 98 image works
too.
But the windows 98 boot disk then should extract the file "ebd.cab" with
the file "extract.com", and that step fails.
Is that a syslinux problem or a windows problem?

locale problem in W98
Dear all
I am using two computers, one with Windows2000 and the other one with W98
both have the same version (precompiled binary) R 1.8.1 and I have experienced a
slight problem with text used in plotting on W98 machine.
When I try to write some local characters into R console
????? (not sure if it is OK on your computers)
in W2000 **everything** is OK but in W98 some of the characters

W98-compatible sharing
Hi!
The problem is that W98 doesn't ask user for username when connecting to
SMB-share. This is not a problem when sharing between W98-computers, since
those only require password for connecting - username is not taken into
account.
Problems start when connecting to NT/Samba-servers, which only seem to
support two options:
- username and password
- no username, no password (guest)

Can't print a pdf?
I just had a strange occurrence. I was printing out some PDFs and I
pulled one down off the web (my wireless bill) and tried to print page
1. My browser properly fired up AR9, but nothing printed. I tried
agian, still nothing. I saved the file, opened it with the Document
Viewer and it can't print the file either. I tried opening it with
GIMP, and it gets this error:

Samba 3.0.2+ldap, user manager for domains problem
Hello, all!
I'm running samba 3.0.2 PDC on FreeBSD 5.2 with ldapsam backend. Everything works great (thanks to Samba Team!) except adding add deleting users from user manager for domains. Group adding and deleting works normally. When I tried do add user I received error window about remote procedure call error, but disabled user account was created in ldap and it was added to Domain Users

slow backup using W98
I have been using Samba as a Windows server replacement for years, both
in my shop and most of my clients. Recently I replaced a WNT 4 server at
a customer location with a Linux box - Mandrake 10.0 - which is strictly
a file server.
The machine my client is using to backup his server is a W98 box w/
350MHz/256MB, an HP Travan tape drive and Stomp Backup My PC V5.0. This
backup was taking about 4

samba 3 LDAP/PDC problem - adding WXP account
Hi,
I've finally gotten my LDAP password backend up and running, and finally figured out the SID 1000/1001 thing for Samba admin.
However I'm unable to join the workstation to my domain.
Using any random user in the WXP dialogue, I get the "Access is Denied" error. Fair enough.
Using the user with sambasid and sambagroupsid s-*-1000/s-*-1001, I get the error "The Username

Samba + VPN + W98
Hello,
I have a network in my office width a Linux RedHat 7.2 Samba Server and W98 Stations, and I want to connect via VPN from my home to the office network from my home W98 station, and I want to have access to all stations from both sides.
It's possible to do that?
Where can I find documentation or software to implement the solution?
Note: I have a ADSL Internet connection.

Problem copying files to flash drive
I had an interesting experience this weekend backing up some flash
drives to another flash drive on my CentOS 5.2 home desktop.
My son had two 256MB flash drives and one 1GB flash drive that he
wanted backed up onto his newer 2GB flash drive. I used rsync to copy
the two smaller ones to the big one without any trouble, but when I
tried to backup the 1GB files to the 2GB drive, I started getting

Accessing Shares with WXP Pro
Let me rephrase my question:
How do I access shares with WXP Pro. I don't want to be part of a
domain. I just want to be able to search for the server from the
computer, map a network drive to a share, and then life will be good.
With that said, right now I can find the server. I can double-click it.
But what comes up is a login box that only lets me put in a password.

Live CD?
I just used a Live CD for the first time today, in part to show what
CentOS can do for a co-worker who is looking at using it at work and
home, but I got the strangest result.
We booted the CD and let the centos user log in. It took a really
long time to load the desktop and there were no panels, so the only
things we could do were browse the computer, CD, home, file system,
keyboard (sort of)
