Skipping missing files when importing data
Trying to import a bunch of data files named like f001, f002, ....f999. Some of the files may be missing and the missing files vary from time to time. Used for loop and read.table. When it reaches the missing file (say f100), it shows: Error in file(file, "r") : cannot open the connection In addition: Warning message: In file(file, "r") : cannot open file 'f100': No

CPAN module install problem
I could use some assistance getting CPAN functional again. CPAN stopped working on Centos 4.2 x64, and I can no longer install modules. I did a install Bundle::CPAN and upgraded to 1.8.2, and perl was updated afterwards via yum update. The error seems related to GPG, does anyone know if 1.8.2 added new restrictions on signatures? $ sudo perl -MCPAN -e shell cpan shell -- CPAN exploration

System hanging in acpi during shutdown
This morning, I upgraded my main system to an up-to-date -STABLE including acpi and it now hangs during shutdown after reporting: Waiting (max 60 seconds) for system process `vnlru' to stop...stopped If I set hw.acpi.disable_on_poweroff=0 then the shutdown completes but poweroff fails with (hand copied): ACPI-1287: ***Error: Method execution failed [\_PTS] (Node 0xc21ed450),

recommends on CentOS + Via Epia CN10000EG
I'm considering building a network gateway using a Via EpiaCN10000EG motherboard like seen here: http://www.logicsupply.com/product_info.php/cPath/79/products_id/444 I've heard that this is a pretty recent mobo and drivers for it are in Ubuntu but that a 2.6.9.x CentOS kernel might have troubles with it. Anyone have any opinions on this mobo? Thanks jed

Rails 4 and HABTM Checkboxes: Unpermitted parameters error
I have a simple Rails 4 project with two scaffolded models: Practice and Practitioner. I have set these both as habtm and am in the process of adding checkboxes to the Practitioner form so that I can check off the practices that this practitioner belongs to. In the practitioners_controller, I added practice_ids to the practitioner_params permit list, but I am still getting the error: Started

OT: workstation recommends: Thinkmate?
I'm looking to buy a new workstation, and it looks like Thinkmate makes what I need -- their vsx "virtually silent" variety. I hestitate because I wasn't happy with a laptop I bought a few years ago from a small outfit that sold Linux boxes exclusively. Does anyone have experience with Thinkmate, and in particular, the VSX line? If the later, is it really quiet. I run Centos

MBR ## SYSLINUX ## Linux (before first partition)
On a boot drive on a PC, I would like to boot Linux by having it at the beginning of the disk, right after the MBR and SYSLINUX, _before_ the first partition, and _not_ in a filesystem. Essentially I want something like booting a floppy with a kernel built using "make fdimage", but with a hard disk instead of a floppy disk. The first partition would probably start at the second

On a side note, try recently released health report tool, and see if it does diagnose any issues in setup. Currently you may have to run it in all the three machines. "User child is on pid"-logging
Hi! I sent a mail a while ago wondering if it was possible to change the loglevel for the "User child is on pid"-message from debug2 to verbose. It would make it easier to trace a connection in the logs when privilege separation is used and sshd uses the user child pid to report that the connection is closing . Is it possible to change this or would it violate the privacy of the users?
