write only permissions
Hi, We've just put in a Samba fileserver to replace our windows box for our School District and it seems to be working great. I have a question about defining some specific permissions though. We set up 'Drop boxes' for teachers that kids can drag files into, but they don't have read permission so they can't read each others submitted work. Here's what is looks like on

KVM vs ESXi
Morning Everyone, I'm busy doing a rebuild of my home server and am tossing between VMware and KVM for this build. I already have experience with ESX, we use it at work, but I'm debating trying out KVM for a while. The server itself is a budget build using a Supermicro X8SAX board w/ i7-950 & 12GB RAM, LSI 3081 SAS RAID (1068e based), rolled into a NorcoTek 16 Bay SAS case. Not fancy

Running IIS under WINE
Hi All -- Has anyone attempted to run IIS under WINE? I realized that one of the biggest things holding me back from moving to Linux is working on IIS-based ASP applications. I would never expect to use such a setup in production, only for development. I am aware that there are various ways to get ASP to run on Linux, but I'm not interested in that. How about Personal Web Server? How

FIPS 140-2 compliance
I''ve just posted a feature request <http://projects.puppetlabs.com/issues/8120> relating to FIPS 140-2 compliance. I''m pointing to it here on the mailing list because I listed there five places where Puppet (nay, Ruby!) crashed while I was testing a deployment using FIPS mode on all hosts. It crashed because it tried to use MD5, and OpenSSL in FIPS mode doesn''t let

Upgrade Novell 4.11 to Samba 3.0.7 wisdom needed
Has anybody done such a thing as this? I'm looking to make this transition as smooth as possible. I have the new fileserver up and running, and I'm using rsync to keep the Novell data current on the Samba server. Any words of advice on transferring the users and groups and permissions over to the new server in the least painful way possible? I have some idea that Novell uses LDAP

register suddenly fails
Hi everybody, I've got a very strange problem: As far as I remember I didn't change anything on my Asterisk side. I have 2 SIP providers to which I can place outbound calls. Today I noticed that outbound calls to provider "inode" fail (and inbound from this provider too). On the CLI I get every 20 seconds following messages: Nov 9 20:01:07 NOTICE[952]: chan_sip.c:5422

As I got to compile 1.0.6 and got it to run but having the same problem as before I thought of creating a new mail thread about this instead of continuing with one where topic is about something else. (Sorry) So, I can't do register anymore. It worked just a couple of days before and I haven't done anything special as far as I remember. *CLI outputs: Feb 28 22:16:55 NOTICE[53475]:

Windows Home Server as Xen Guest
hi there, I''ve been googling for a while but cant find anything of interest... Has anyone tried running Windows Home Server as a Xen guest? I would like to use WHS on my Home server as it greatly simplifies the management of storage, however i''d like the server to be able to other things aswell, hence wanting to use Xen... Any ideas?
