Preservation of short and long filenames in Windows 9x with Samba
I have combed the Internet for an answer to this question and I have
not found it.
Here's the problem.
As some may know, trying to copy files with xcopy32/explorer on a
Windows machine to another drive or other Windows machine DOES NOT
imply that both long and short filenames will be copied exactly.
eg.
long filename : thisisalongfilename.txt (in Windows)
short filename: THISIS~1.TXT (at

wine-20050419 - where to set audio driver type?
Hi,
In a completely clean account that's never run Wine before I run
wine --version. Wine installs a new .wine directory but this Wine
directory has no config file. I looked in the 3 obvious files but none
of them seem to have an option for changing between OSS, Alsa and
JAck. where do I make this setting change now?
Thanks,
Mark

ipfw2 in 5.2.1
hi - this is my first post to this list so go easy on me ! I am trying to find info on using ipfw2 with freebsd 5.2.1 as I have read that it supports MAC address based firewalling. Situation is, I have a small externally managed VPN network, about 12 different subnets all terminating in my office location, and all managed by a tier 1 telco. Problem is, their CPE routers do not have any firewalling

Multi-line comments?
Hi,
I looked in the language definition and was surprised. Is there
really no multi-line/block comment defined in R?
I wanted to comment out 20 lines that I'm moving to a function but
didn't want to delete them. Is there no defined way to get around
using a # on each of the 20 lines?
Thanks,

How to delete Apps from the AppDB?
Hi,
I maintain several apps in the appdb.
I lately discovered 2 unmaintained apps that are exactly the same that I maintain but which remain in a different category.
I adopted them and tried to merge them with the ones that are in the correct section.
But how do I delete the "old" apps? I couldn't find an option for that.
Thanks in advance.

ReShape/cast question - sum of value in table
Hi,
I've tried to capture the basics of this problem I'm having. Been
working on this for a couple of days and just cannot get past it. As a
test of this list software I've attached is a small text file zipped
up. I hope it gets through but if it doesn't I'll post the actual text
which is only 26 lines. Put it somewhere sensible and change the first
line in the code to point

What command lists everything in a package?
Hi,
Two easy questions I'm sure.
1) As an example if I use the code
require(zoo)
then once it's loaded is there a command that lists everything that
zoo provides so that I can study the package?
Certainly help(zoo) gives me some clues about what zoo does but I'd
like a list. Maybe there's a way to query something but in Rgui under
Win Vista ls() returns nothing after zoo

Plot two graphs with different ranges in one
Hi, I'm trying to plot two variables in one graph. One ranges between 0 and
1, while the other ranges between 50 and 500. Can I plot them in one graph
with similar scale?
Thanks

'scan' in a script?
When I use the scan function in the Rgui console it works as expected.
However it seems that when I put the same command in a script file it
doesn't wait for input.
Is there an option to scan to make it wait for input when used in a
script? Or is there possibly a different function that will do in a
script the same sort of thing as scan does in the console?
Thanks,

More complicated multi-plot layouts?
Hi,
I made the attached picture by mocking up three separate plots sort
of like how I'd like to make a new plot. Hopefully it will get through
to the list.
Is there a way to do this directly using par somehow? Or one of the
other plotting packages? Basically, multiple larger plot above
multiple groups of smaller plots? The smaller plots are just
par(mrow=c(2,3)) things, and I can

lag a data.frame column?
Sometimes it's the simple things...
Why doesn't this lag X$x by 3 and place it in X$x1? (i.e. - Na's in
the first 3 rows and then values showing up...)
The help page does talk about time series. If lag doesn't work on
data.frame columns then what would be the right function to use to lag
by a variable amount?
Thanks,
Mark
X=data.frame(x=seq(1:10))
X$x1=lag(X$x, 3)

Include files?
Hi,
I have 15 or 20 functions I've written to convert the sort of data
I'm working with. They are currently in their own R file which I load
by hand in Rgui before loading and running my main programs.
Is there any way to have this file included in my R program like
#include might in C?
If not is there a simple newbie-type example of how to create a
package so I could just say

Winetools - Java?
Hi,
I wonder if I'm just missing it. Does Winetools have any built in
support for installing Java to run under Wine?
I want to use a web site (Streetsmart.com) that is restricted to
using IE. I've got IE running under Wine but now need Java support to
continue forward.
Thanks,

ifelse choices in a data.frame?
Hi,
In my data.frame I wanted to essentially write
If(Test) c*d else c+d
but that doesn't work. I found I could do it mathematically, but it
seems forced and won't scale well for nested logic. I have two
examples below writing columns e & f, but I don't think the code is
self-documenting as it depends on knowing that Test is a TRUE/FALSE.
Is there a better way to do the

Test for X=1 fails, test for >0 works, data in text file is 1
Hi,
I am apparently not understanding some nuance about either the use
of subset or more likely my ability to test for a numerical match
using '='. Which is it? Thanks in advance.
I've read a data file, reshaped it and then created MyResults by
keeping only lines where the value column is greater than 0. So far so
good. The data in MyResults looks good to me by eye.

Any concept of 'by reference' or 'address of' in R?
Hi,
Is there a way to pass the address of a data.frame through a set of
functions in R? I've got some code which is slowing down I think
because my data.frames are getting much larger - now approaching 1
million rows by 50-100 columns - and my functions - originally written
for much smaller data elements are sampling these data.frames a couple
of layers down.
Before I rewrite them to do

CDROM detect failed
Hi,
I was trying to install an old Sierra game called Lighthouse. It
used to fail completely under old versions of Wine and I got a request
to try it again. I am doing this on a Gentoo 64-bit machine but Wine
is a 32-bit app on this machine:
mark at lightning ~ $ file /usr/bin/wine
/usr/bin/wine: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1
(SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.6.9, dynamically linked

ReShape chicks example - line plots
Hi,
In the examples from the ReShape package there is a simple example
of using melt followed by cast that produces a smallish amount of
output about the chicks database. Here's the code:
library(reshape)
names(ChickWeight) <- tolower(names(ChickWeight))
chick_m <- melt(ChickWeight, id=2:4, na.rm=TRUE)
DietResults <- cast(chick_m, diet + chick ~ time)
