Fedora Core 4 rpms
Hi,
I have been waiting patiently for the Fedora Core 4 rpms. I have noticed
that all of the other distros have wine-9.4, but Fedora/RedHat, the most
used Linux distro of all, is still at wine-9.2 and has always been lagging
for eons in the past.
What gives?

reading the vorbis equivilent of id3 tags. What is the proceedure for
reporting bugs like this. Do I mail the bug into this mailing list and
then serve the song off of a FTP server?

Sharing an R installation via NFS on ubuntu cluster
hi all,
i want to share an R installation from a master node to several compute
nodes via NFS. all nodes run ubuntu 16.04. I tried building R from source
but hit a wall several times because of missing dependencies. So I am
looking for something that uses the usual apt-get install proceedure, but
would place the installation in the non-standard location. For context,
right now I would have to

Removing the boot loader,
Hi, please advise,
I attempted to use this boot loader on my new(ish)
laptop to enable a boot from a USB device containing a
Linux distro, however this failed and I have decided
to re-partition my hard disk and install a heavier
distro.
The boot sequence on the laptop now runs syslinux and
pxe ( which fails with error 64), causing a few
seconds delay in the boot proceedure. How can I remove

SMB signing.
Hi all,
Is anyone using Windows SMB signing in a production environment ?
This is the signing proceedure created by setting the Registry keys
EnableSecuritySignature:1, RequireSecuritySignature: 1 in the lanmanserver
and lanmanworkstation parameters.
I'm playing with implementing this in Samba for 3.0, but am finding
that it doesn't seem to work when mixing Windows NT or Windows 2000

Weighted Optimization
Hi All,
I am trying to code an R script which gives me the time varying parameters of the NIG and GH distributions. Further, becasue I think these these time varying parameters should be more responsive to more recent observations, I would like to include a weighted likelihood estimation proceedure where the observations have an exponentially decaying weighting rather than the equal weighting

Samba as PDC for win2000
Hi
I am having the most basic of problems. I have setup a PDC with samba
2.2.2 and am trying to get my Win200) machine to join the domain. I followed the
following proceedure
http://ivy:901/swat/help/Samba-HOWTO-Collection.html#SAMBA-PDC
And when I go to the client W2000 box and change from the workgroup to
join the domain I get a popup which says

apt-get build-dep r-base
should take care of that.

XP Home can't print to Samba
OK, I was so pleased to get Samba and CUPS working and XP Pro systems
printing fine. Then, I went through the same steps with a laptop that had
XP Home on it. I installed the printer drivers as an admin, and had no
trouble accessing shares on Samba. Even could connect to and view the
printer.
Trouble is that nothing printed. After clicking Print Test Page, there was
around a 1 min pause before

Sharing an R installation via NFS on ubuntu cluster
I can install R with
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install r-base
this is not my problem, and indeed, not my question. my question was how
could I share the resulting R installation over NFS? Do I have to export
every location where apt-get installs a component or can I force apt-get to
place the installation in a certain location?

Public switches (AXE10) not capable of handling sustained call setup bursts on E100P
Hi,
I'm running a simple test from asterisk towards a
public telco switch (AXE10) over E100P.
Here is the test case:
1) 30 calls are setup simultainously, 20 sec ringing
time.
2) no calls answers (just calling a vacant public tax
office :=)
3) Each channel will continue on its own with the same
proceedure: ring for 20 sec, then hangup, ring for 20
sec, and so on.
Of course this leads to

A questiong about replacing my failing drive
First, I am not a RedHat or linux newbie. I simply have not had to do
what I am getting ready to do, and I want to see if I am going to run into
a problems...
My HDA drive is failing (I can hear the occasional click from it and I am
seeing Smart errors, the transfer rate is slow but all my data is there).
I have 3 partitions on it, the /, /boot/ and my game servers (this is also
the drive the

overwrite any file with updatedb
[Mod: Headers modified -- alex]
If this is already known, my apologies. It seemed very strange that this
worked, so I thought it would be mentionable.
On many linux systems(Redhat imparticularly) updatedb is run nightly
around 1:00. When it sorts the files that find gets, it creats a few files
in /tmp called sort0<pid>000{1,2,etc}. Each is around 512k. The
first file is created and filled,

killing "uninterruptible sleep" process
Hi
I logged in to one of my servers today and noticed that the load average is
very high. After investigating the problem I found two processes in "D" stat
("uninterruptible sleep"):

/usr/bin/updatedb -f NFS,SMBFS,NCPFS,PROC,DEVPTS -e

updatedb taking too long

For some reason mlocate is taking a long time when I run the updatedb

[root at beta:~] #time updatedb

It's not a big volume by any means

fstype=auto breaks updatedb
It turns out that if you specify filesystem type `auto' in
/etc/fstab, updatedb (the thing which updates your `locate'
database) ceases to work.
Here's the contents of my /etc/updatedb.conf:
PRUNEFS="devpts NFS nfs afs proc smbfs autofs auto iso9660"
PRUNEPATHS="/tmp /usr/tmp /var/tmp /afs /net"
export PRUNEFS
export PRUNEPATHS

GLM(...,start,...) question
I am trying to use the glm.nb proceedure in the new MASS library. I have
count data (of snails) taken from a number of habitats (artesian springs).
I want to model the abundances, including an effect of the organic content
of the sediment. When I try to fit a model like:
nb.model.p <- glm.nb(abundance~Organics.per.wt)
I get the error message:
Error: no valid set of coefficients has been
